Hey /djt/ I tried reading stuff but I had huge problems, I never knew where the words end and where they start.
What caused the problems were kana only words in between sentences, stuff like から、だから、けど、だけど、ので、なので、んで、しかも stuff like that.
I couldn't tell where the conjugated word ended and where one of these kana words started.

What do? I already read a grammar book, but it didn't help me much obviously, so I guess I have to read Tae Kim or something?

It's weird but I really started to like Kanji, since they show me where words start and end.

I can understand most of the words he's saying but I can't understand much of the thing as a whole as always, it happens with anime too.

At least at the end I think I got him telling her she was a 迷惑 to society, calling her all sorts of "trash", that she got no friends, and that her mom and dad abandoned her.
I didn't get the 顎 thing though, what was he telling her about that?

>>143604891
>It's how languages work bro some things sound wrong and some sound right with no particular rhyme or reason for it
there is a reason why "best recommendation" sounds weird and top doesn't
a recommendation being top or number one makes sense because they elicit it coming before all other recommendations he might give. "best" sounds like you're describing the quality of the recommendation itself, which can make sense in a different context e.g. "the guy at the bookstore said i should read 'i am a hero' and i ended up loving it. it's the best recommendation i've ever gotten."

Music is a serious "don't think feel" thing. You'll just have to take that for granted and listen to it rather than trying to pick apart its grammar. Song artists like to stretch the language's grammar a bit.
Just look at English lyrics if you want an idea of how broken and abstract it can be. Translation is a no-go.

All I've done lately is review kanji in Anki. I'm losing the will to even continue that. Haven't read anything in a week. I just kind of don't care anymore. My interest in Japanese media (or anything else for that matter) is pretty much gone. Meh.

I just saw 石に漱ぎ流れに枕す today and thought the backstory was pretty funny.

look at grammar as the main foundation of your japanese skill, grinding vocab is just a way to speed up your acquisition of it through reading

don't make the mistake of thinking learning vocab=learning japanese
at the end of the day a simple dictionary will let you understand any single word, but good luck finding a dictionary to let you understand how to split the clauses in a given complex sentence

>how do I memorize the meanings
see 経験
flip card over
see "けいけん - experience"
memorize that

Took N1 at Ikebukuro campus of Rikkyo University.

Rikkyo University is pretty nice, I wouldn't mind teaching there after I finish my doctorate.

That aside, the test wasn't too bad. I didn't have a watch, so I preemptively felt pressed for time the whole test, but in the end I finished with like 25 minutes remaining. The hardest part was the "choose an example sentence where this word is used best" exercise, because the example sentences are all of the same type and vary only in nuance.

99,9% of other attendees were Asians and I could see some of them buried in textbooks even minutes before the test started. Around two thirds in one Asian guy fainted. I guess he was tired and dehydrated.

I spent yesterday getting ready by playing Muramasa.

what does "memorize all grammar" mean to you
grammar isn't something you memorize, it's to be read and understood
you're never going to reach a point when you can no longer improve your reading comprehension

as for the particles well, there aren't so many of them, but it'll be a long time before you should be confidently saying you understand them 100%
so repeat the cycle of reading and trying to understand what you just read, and over time you will learn more

I think he means people who aren't being honest about how long they have studied.

Like "I passed N1 in a year. Oh yeah, I knew took japanese in high school and then watched anime for 6 years, but it was only a year of serious study while living in Japan"

On the other hand N3 in 6 months is pretty reasonable if you study hard so maybe it just means the majority of this thread is N3-N2
>>
>>143645928
in two ways.
first, they're not posting sub 200 scores.
second, by underestimating how long they studied.

if we want to draw autistic lines in the sand of "good" and "not good" then anything less than 350 is definitely "not good" and i'd expect a near-perfect score (~400?) from anyone who told me "i know japanese"

So learning Japanese has always been a personal goal of mine but after going through the hassle that was learning enough Mandarin to feign kindergartener levels of competency, I never really bothered.

This thing's been on my radar for a couple months, anybody actually tried this? Is it good for learning even the basics without putting any real effort? I know Hiragana is only one of the many writing systems but I figured that it might be decent at getting my foot in the door since I think either hiragana or katakana (don't recall which) is used like pinyin where they write out the pronunciation next to kanji for people who can't read in some mediums.

Usually I do well with repeated flashcard drills as long as I have some context to bind them to (e.g. not staring at just flashcards all day) in my head, otherwise I just start to forget them because eventually I internalise the characters in the order that I learned them in class and struggle with trying to remember them after a couple weeks of not using them, which is why I'm wondering if a repetitive RPG-like system would be nice for learning for me while I autistically go for 100% cheevos. I'm more of a math/sciences and history guy, languages have never been my strong suit. Spent most of my pre-18 years learning French (because Canada) and 4-5 years taking Mandarin classes but I'll probably be back to failing intro classes if I go back to one. I can still read French without looking up vocab all the time so I guess that's not a complete loss there.

I'm only asking because it's on the Steam Summer Sale.and I'm looking for a few cheap games to pad out my cart for some extra cards but this seems enticing to a guy like me. I'd ask the Steam forums but nobody there actually seems to know Japanese (like /v/) judging by the reviews and posts, and I can't find the Learn Japanese thread on /jp/ (seems to have died or moved here I guess).

How is the DoJG supposed to be used?
I have heard from here that it's not supposed to be used like a grammar guide since it's named a dictionary and I should look up things I find while reading, but the table of contents is really lackluster in that regard.
Sorry for the stupid question.

>>143647752

I'll expand on my answer a bit in case you really want to buy the game: don't. These things are a total scam that pry on the ignorance of weebs and other people clueless of Japanese. Games like this will only teach you kana you can learn in a single day (this is not even an exaggeration) and a few words you probably already know if you watch anime. They are also attractive to people and gather good reviews because they lull people into a false sense of accomplishment with their levelling system (in fact that's what Wanikani does, another scam for "learning" Japanese) so you think progress in the game = progress in the language when it's not true.

Lastly, 5 years of learning Mandarin is pretty significant, but judging from your post it seems you haven't done any progress. Can't blame you, language classes are usually pretty bad. But Japanese is a lot more intuitive in my opinion, and much easier at the start at the start thanks to kana. You can read from the very start too.

I did them over the course of two weeks, very leisurely on the side, just around 10 per day, IIRC. Used this website:
http://unckel.de/kanateacher/
and then just also wrote them down a few times later each day. Of course accumulative, not separated.
>>
>>143649952
I actually learned them while I wasn't learning Japanese, just out of curiosity/weebness I guess. I looked at a kana table when I saw kana I didn't know, and I kept doing that until I learned it so it must've been something between 1 and 3 months.
I did use realkana though for katakana, of which I knew only like half when I decided to start learning. That was pretty fast.

>Tfw you have a job and have to do reps on your breaks.

I feel like I might be blowing through my cards too quickly. I set my "To Review" to 9999, but should I up my new cards a day from 20? I just don't want to burn myself out. What do, DJT-sama?
>>
>>143652202
suspend all non seen cards in core

see if a kanji of the word is in core, if so -> unsuspend all words that contain. if not -> add the word to core

this way I have always 500~ cards queued up and I can skip the useless/uncommon ones that core has in dozen

>Lastly, 5 years of learning Mandarin is pretty significant, but judging from your post it seems you haven't done any progress.
I still remember most of the characters but basically no vocab because the classes focused a lot on just learning characters and the occasional sentence memorisation. Unless it's an easy compound word, I'm not going to know what the fuck it's actually supposed to mean.
I don't remember learning any grammar rules really other than just winging it either, and forgot most of the pinyin because the pronunciation rules in the last year eventually were 100% accented English with no pinyin so I sort of forgot it all instantly (don't know why, really. I imagined I'd retain pinyin forever while forgetting all the characters).

My French classes on the other hand did a lot of grammar and writing which is probably why I can still read even if my pronunciation and verbal skills are in the shitter. The only reason I wanted to try this was because learning the writing systems and vocab first seemed like the better option for me in retaining anything if I try my hand at learning languages again. It's why I don't really like stuff like Rosetta Stone and Duolingo because they just train you in bullshitting some verbal cues and then call you fluent. Not that Duolingo has asian languages anyway.

>>143648915
I'm also cheap. I just wanted some sort of drilling system that I can run during work breaks or Civ V turns that wasn't just some blank set of flashcards like from my Mandarin class days, but as the other guy said, a lot of the "LEARN A LANGUAGE IN A VIDEO GAME xD" stuff seem to suffer from lack of content and/or teaching you anything at all and I guess this game is no different.
