I disagree. We needed a little bit of time in XYZ to get a feel for the kind of shit Academia did firsthand. And personally, I'm pretty happy with it ending at 13 eps. That's all it needed to show everything and have some skirmishes with Academia to act as a prelude for Fusion arc.

I mean we've already seen what kind of stuff Academia has done in the XYZ dimension through flashbacks of Shun, Yuto, and Sora. They don't do anything else other than card people which we've already known beforehand too. So, I don't really see why we need to get more of a feel for it. The biggest problem is that the show struggles to reach even a passable level of animation quality when it isn't one of their in-house ADs directing (of which there are like 3 out of a dozen).

Inconsistency and some QUALITY is normal for a Yugioh anime, but even when so many of the stills are poorly drawn, something stinks.

Even trying to ignore the animation problems, the general art direction is somewhat more generic than past series (besides GX), especially after the show abandoned unique action duel fields.

They would have been working out what they can't/can afford during the pre production process, and all this 'VAs take the budget' nonsense immediately has holes punched into it by the fact that there are almost always cheaper 2nd choices they could have decided to go with.

There are always seiyuu who out there who could use more work, including newcomers trying to break into the field, which ultimately keeps most salaries low. A lot of the more famous seiyuu supplement their income with events/interviews/character songs and other additional things like that related to what they do, rarely do they get lavishly paid from the actual job, since charging astronomical (relatively) prices places you out of the competition.

Tsukikage/Shinji: Reira obsesses over his brother, Reiji explains that he wanted Tsukikage to lose all along, and Shinji is established as a charismatic revolutionary (from the opinion of commons) looking to turn society on its head

Yuzu/Enjoy: Yuzu is trying to reach Yuya emotionally and cheer him up since she knows he's upset about his loss vs jack (It's also a fun duel)

Yuya/Ni Ni Nana: Not a great duel, but it all but outright shows academia's influence in synchro and explains the true mentality of the City

Sawatari/Yugo: A fun as fuck duel between a ham and a retard that also hints at plot details

I do not have the figures but it has been discussed to hell and back how characters like Yuya, Reiji, and Mieru have absurdly high priced and popular VA. Why do you THINK Reiji literally kept showing up and not speaking for about 20 episodes? Literally no budget was left thanks to the nostalgia cashgrab movie to pay Yoshimasa Hosoya who if you look at his filmography you can understand with how many big name anime he has voiced in and just how large his body of work is.

Now look at Kensho Ono's, Yuya's VA, body of work and you will understand why we had stretches of episodes where the main character would not duel and some where he barely spoke. This is not the first time this shit has happened, there is a precedent for movies ruining Yugioh seasons by sapping the budget and ripping out half the staff to work on a movie. This literally happened during the Bonds Beyond Time movie production, and that coinciding with the sex cult scandal is the reason the second half of 5D's was so fucking terrible.

Why would they hire so many VA that are so pricy they struggle to pay for them? I don't know Yugioh productions have always been half retarded. They got addicted to voice appeal thanks to KENN boosting GX. Not to mention they never plan for the execs to ruin production with movies so they hire tons of high profile voices for fucking nobodies.

It is still better than pretty much the entire franchise. Dark Signers almost actually was a truly good and coherent run but then sex cult and BBT happened so GX is still easily the best we've got.

For comparison, here's the GX watch guide covering episodes 1 - 104 as by the time season 3 hit, every episode then was pretty much plot. According to the guide, there are about 20 episodes that can be considered skippable without loss to the plot and 16 episodes that are borderline interesting watch/skip. I myself wouldn't recommend skipping any of them as even the skippable episodes can be a fun watch.

There's also a few things I disagree with on the guide, like how wrong it is on 85 - 86. 85 is the episode with Pegasus and 86 is the most filler episode to ever fill. 40's description fits more with 43 than 40, along with 40 being a duel against one of the Seven Stars, yeah...

It isn't just about Reiji and Yuzu. It's about every single character being sidelined this arc. Yuya is literally the only Lancer that has won a duel. Shun, Sawatari and Gon have only won single tag duels/battle royals when they had Yuya on their team. It's probably not a good idea to get this attached to an anime and be so insular, anon. Being a big anime fanatic is one thing, but being this clingy to one specific show that honestly isn't particularly exceptional or great? Broaden your horizons.

For me the main reason I haven't dropped it is to see how they finally explain the bigger mysteries of the show.
