"Battle shonen" is a perfectly apt description for the kind of manga that this is. It's less blatant about it than NNT or Black Clover or Bleach, but it's still true to its roots at times. Even Shokugeki no Soma is, in essence, a battle shonen. It's just cooking themed.

1.) why do you "NEED" to have a quirk to be a hero, we have been shown several heroes where, sure their quirk helps a little, but ultimately they are just a strong person beating up bad guys.

2.) In that same vein why wasn't Deku getting /fit/ as fuck before he met allmight, he could have taken the typically shonen arc of "i'm going to do the impossible by working harder than everyone else, that combined with his brains could have really been a good combination. and then it just so happens the magical mcguffin ofa lands in his lap and he can be a legit hero now, it would have not changed the story in any meaningful way but make so much more sense

1. The only high tier fighter with a weak quirk that we have seen is Stain, and he had to ambush heroes one by one to be successful.
2.He never really believed that he could be a hero before Allmight told him. Remember, that whole bit with his mother, how she regreted saying "I'm sorry " then what Deku really wanted to hear is "You can be a hero "? The story would be really different if she just said those words. Deku would probably get super fit and try to follow his dreams, use his strategical thinking and some gadgets to get into Academia.
