Too lazy to write in Jap

Since many sites all seem to agree with the description of that reference, it has at least some trustworthiness. Also, that webpage is on a college's website, while wikipedia is just wikipedia.

The fact that there isn't hard evidence for it doesn't mean it is wrong. Wikipedia doesn't state that there is hard evidence for the other side either. I wouldn't expect hard evidence, but rather just a knowledgeable interpretation based on how the language is used at the time.

This isn't to say that that reference is right, but when wikipedia conflicts with its own references it's time to stop trusting that wikipedia page.

The reference after it:

says the same thing. And the third reachable reference is a missing page. So basically the only two online references say that.

Again, I'm not saying it's necessarily correct, but I wouldn't take wikipedias statement that "there's no hard evidence" to mean that the other side is correct when no available references support the other side.

>>143320930

hey guys question when it comes to learning a language should i listen to music ?

i mean i've heard different things by different people some say it's a distraction others say it's helpful

what do you do ?
>>
>>143321503
watch more anime
>>
>>143321518
When I learned German I tried to immerse myself as much as I could in the language, not even forcing myself to do it but rather out of interest. I'd listen to German music, watch Tageschau, watch German movies, play games in German, etc. It helped quite a bit. But there is really nothing like going to the country and having to interact in day-to-day conversation to really bolster your skills.

Sadly I haven't been to Germany in a long time and I've lost some of my German speaking and writing skill.
>>
>>143321518
do you mean while studying the language?
i see no reason why not

it's undeniably a little bit of a distraction but if it makes you feel nice who cares
if it's japanese music all the better
>>
>>143321518
Don't listen to music with intelligible vocals while doing flashcards. It thrashes most peoples'short term verbal memory.

Aside from that one exception, it doesn't matter either way.
>>
>>143321312
Or actually I suppose wikipedia does list what it claims is evidence for the other side

>天上天下唯我為尊 三界皆苦吾当安之

But I can't understand that shit so it really would be nice if there was an actual reliable source talking about it
>>

>>
>>143322395
The "not wanting to burn out" excuse is so dumb. If you find the number of cards is doing is too high and you can't cope, you're not going to go "AH I'M ALL BURNED OUT BETTER GIVE UP AND KILL MYSELF", you'd just reduce the number of cards to a level you can cope with like a sane human being.

>>
>>143322462
any normal person is going to burn out at 80 new cards a day unless they're on amphetamines

not wanting to burn out is a perfectly reasonable excuse because going down to a level they can cope with will be, on average, significantly lower than 80

80 words over 2 and a half hours gives you lots of time to write down words multiple times, mull it over, and really commit a word before clicking next. It's not that unreasonable if you commit to it and your short term goal is exclusively to up your vocab.

Japanese isn't about memorizing a dictionary. Anki is a supplement, not the main tool.

Eh, I would disagree with that. I can read the text posted above and get about 90% of it without help from rikai or whatever but as someone with experience studying it, actual heian/muromachi/sengoku period 古文 is a real bitch. It's different enough from modern Japanese to be called an entirely different language. It's kind of like saying Shakespeare can ease you into reading old English, it just doesn't work that way.

From this I got "Evade the death that awaits ahead of hope" but I'm lost at the 利用する手も. What function does 手 has there, something like "effort"?

>Such phrases aren't used by daily life but. If you would like to become a teacher of history or Japanese, it's different.
Forgive me for bothering you here. It's totally okay to entirely remove the sentence break after "but" here, matching the japanese.

>Such phrases aren't used in daily life but if you would like to become a teacher of history or Japanese it's different.

I removed the comma near the end there because removing the sentence break made it break an extremely complicated ambiguity thing. Basically, having two clauses before the comma usually means that both clauses before the comma apply to the clause after the comma. However, the clause after the comma is a dependent clause tied only to the "if" of the second clause before the comma, so the two rules contradict eachother.

Most writers would reinsert commas for to make the sentence more readable, but it's not technically necessary.

>Such phrases aren't used in daily life, but if you would like to become a teacher of history or Japanese, it's different.

日本語は出来ないけど全く珍しいことがあるな

English punctuation rules are a pile of shit that you won't fully learn until you read good English writing for at least seven years. Sentence structure, tone of voice, urgency, writing style, and dialect all affect it, too.

わからない言葉は少なくてもまたは多くても気にしないで and I can't learn japanese because I spend too much time on bad posts like this one.

Basically, english prefers to put conjunctions after punctuation, while japanese prefers to put conjunctions before punctuation. Ending sentences on conjunctions is very rare. However, if the sentence is structured appropriately, both languages can drop punctuation inside a sentence.

This leads to a lot of complications in english grammar, because english grammar always goes both left and right. That's why combining the sentences made me remove the original comma, then add back commas.

Just want to make sure I don't put too much emphasis on that comma.
>>
>>143327583
also if you want to be a true leet eigo speaker you can just drop any semblance of proper punctuation and capitalization altogether and not give a fuck

Now you should tell me about how it's slightly easier for you to pronounce Japanese as if that justifies wasting years of your life on a meaningless native language.

>>143331981
You keep telling yourself that. The fact is that a language (and its grammar) restricts your way of thinking. You will be attempting to translate the untranslatable, looking for equivalents that don't really exist. We can transcend that and adapt to new ways of thinking so much faster.
Also:

>>
>>143332101
I didn't realise your euro language also had a completely different grammar structure despite being derived from the same root- oh wait, it doesn't and you have no more experience.

Any examination into a bilingual/polyglot vs a native at learning a new unrelated language is inherently flawed, as someone who has already learnt more than one language is obviously more predisposed to learning others and will probably be better at sticking with it.

I can totally understand that knowing Swiss is going to give you a big advantage in German, but I don't see how knowing either would give you an advantage in Japanese. If you already know Chinese, or English, or maybe Korean, then sure, but anything else is unrelated.

That's not how it works. Do you remember learning your native language? It's just natural and you don't really think about how easy or hard it was.

Holy shit, you're clueless, aren't you? Tell me how Hungarian has the same (or even similar) grammar structure to English. I'll wait. Ironically, it's more similar to Japanese. Or Czech with its incredibly loose word order and numerous morphological phenomenons that don't even exist in English.

And you don't seem to understand, it's not that it'll necessarily give you an advantage in Japanese, it'll give you an advantage in language learning in general since your brain is a muscle and if you train it in a certain way, it'll respond with increased flexibility.

Obviously not him but the korean grammar is pretty similar to Japanese. Many Japanese and Koreans will tell you this, so if you google in Japanese you will find such threads if you dont believe me. Also Chinese has some of the same characters which is a plus obviously
>>
>>143332242
Ignoring the fact that you're a retard and aren't going to listen to anything thrown your way,

Say you're a monolingual and you're trying to learn some new grammatical rules for a new language. You look for an equivalent to those rules in English but can't find it, so now you will have to work long and hard to fully grasp this completely new concept.

Meanwhile, a bilingual encountering the same set of rules might find an equivalent in one of their languages and instantly master that concept, allowing them to move on to the next aspect of the new language.

It's not rocket science.

A way more complex system of declensions (it affects nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and numerals), a way more gendered speech (you gender shows in your speech, this affects even verbs), a different way of expressing grammatical aspect, a drastically different (and way more complex) way of creating diminutives. In general, in Czech you change a structure of a word more often than you change a structure of a sentence.

This is a good opportunity to talk about how much I hate languages with genders, although this is more for German since it's what I learned.

They're the worst things ever possibly conceived of. Every single noun has one, so you basically have to remember an extra piece of information for every noun in the language. Thousands of things to remember. Then whenever making a sentence, you have to adjust the verbs, adjectives and articles accordingly around every noun to fit whatever gender it is. Changing basically almost every word in the sentence, with a whole set of different grammar rules for each gender. Now with such a huge amount of effort invested in them, you'd think they'd serve some useful purpose? Nope. They don't contribute a single useful thing whatsoever. They don't add meaning to your sentence, they don't add flavour to your choice of words, they don't help distinguish between types of nouns, they do literally nothing of any benefit. People complain about aspects of Japanese or English all the time but there is nothing there so completely, utterly useless and meaningless as the concept of genders. I am just glad I can spend the rest of my life never exposed to such torture every again.

What would it be like to be a marketer, accountant, financer, or whatever for an anime studio, toy company, or video game company?

This sounds interesting and very competitive, and it's just another japanese goal I thought about today.

But I usually have phases like these. For instance, just a month ago, I was dead set on becoming an aero engineer in japan. Doushio? Help.

I got the idea after meeting a japanese woman who worked as a marketer for a anime figure company on hellotalk.

It's mostly a waste of time and money, especially if you've already started learning. It'll move at a much slower pace than what you'd be able to do yourself, if you're self disciplined enough to teach yourself using the guide. It might be good for speaking practice, but most of us here only really care about consuming media, so speaking is secondary.

When a word is "Usually written using kana alone" according to jisho, should I mine its kanji version anyway? It's easier to learn a combination of a few large components (kanji) than the combination of many small components (kana), so this'd make remembering words easier. But I have a feeling that learning everything in kanji would make me learn words in very literary forms that no-one actually uses. Or is that not a problem?

what does that have to do with it
each individual kanji in there is perfectly recognizable
for the record i don't think even people who study writing and radicals recognize kanji by looking at each radical, it's still shape recognition, just considerably more informed because they studied stroke order and differentiate kanji better

When people who do things like RTK start out they dissect kanji radical by radical. Over time that goes away of course, but it makes me wonder what was the point in memorizing the radicals of every kanji to begin with. It doesn't actually help with reading (or typing), but only with writing. Even if you wanted to write it doesn't seem logical to start with a method like RTK. Use it once you can already read.
