About a month in, ~130 mature cards in. I've been taking it slow to improve retention, I was at 5 new cards a day a few weeks ago, barely got up to 15 yesterday. Maybe in a couple of weeks I'll be back up to 20 again, but right now I want to get my retention to 80% (70% right now).
>>
>>143271106

Yeah I watched re: zero too
>>
>>143271081
Is it just ナンバー?

I get the feeling it's just ナンバー.
>>
>>143271204
Nah, most people call it シャープ.
Official name is 井桁
>>
>>143271143
I had the same problem when I started. You will realize after some time that your progress is super slow. I tried after some time to increase my new cards and you get used to it pretty fast. Retention will go down but on the long run you will get a higher retention. Try 40 new cards and increase the intervalls. Otherwise you will learn forever
>>
>>143271297
well, in the context of something like #0624

i'm thinking you would read it ナンバー ゼロ ろく に よん
>>
>>143270825
>switch IME to japanese
>shift 3
>press space to get to kanji henkan menu
>IME tells you pronunciations

>type きごう
>look through the massive list for the symbol you are interested in
>ime tells you how it is pronounced

although it may give slightly less common names for some things, like アステリスク for * when people might just call it こめ

You can also literally just type # 井桁
>>
>>143271321
I just feel that would lead to burnout. I don't mind learning forever, I'm still learning new English even if I've known it since I was a toddler.

Why would it be ナンバー anyway I would read that as "pound" in english
>>
>>143271321
>increase the intervalls
SERIOUSLY DON'T DO THIS SHIT
I increased my intervals back when I started out and it fucked me over in a long run. Don't fucking rush cards to maturity.

>>143271379
In that context Japanese would read it as シャープ or シャープボタン when speaking about phone number.
>>
>>143271437
Do you actually think Japanese people give a shit about the difference between ## and bother to distinguish them?
>>
>>143271379
Yes it'd probably be number.

>>143271457
So if you get first place in a race, i.e. #1, you're "pound one"? No wonder you ended up leaving the EU.
>>
>>143271416
You will probably be frustrated that you can't read nor speak after 3 months of learning and then stop like most beginners. Even if you would burn out you could still decrease your new cards. You should just try more at the beginning to see how it works out. At the beginning everything about the language is new but if you just jump in then you can probably draw some connections
>>143271479
>Don't fucking rush cards to maturity.

those are literally the same and that's not what I'm asking

in english the phone button is always called pound but can be read as "number" in a context like lucky dragon #5

anyway i saw it in the context of some phone buttons so it's probably

Are there any LNs for adults? Like, not teenie bopper drama... but actual storytelling?

That's the same as asking for shonen targeted towards adults.

This is what I figured, honestly.

Oh and also, if you want to read Hakomari, the first volume might bore you a bit. It really reads like your typical generic fiction at first, but I feel it picks up later on. The first volume still manages to keep you interested in the end though, so I don't think you'll hate it.

We use some imperial units still in the UK. It's a total mess. We were supposed to switch over to the metric system, but for some reason just seemingly gave up on it half way through its adoption. As a result, I get confused by imperial measurements which have been switched to metric measurements here, and I get confused by metric measurements which are still imperial measurements here.

I feel the pain of both Europeans and Americans at the same time.

I have a love/hate relationship with Anki. Whenever I see a new card, I beat myself up over not remembering it instantly and so I see it many times and feel like shit when I have that "I've seen the card a lot but I still can't tell what it is."

Then I remember it instantly the next day and it fills me with joy, but there are new cards, oh so many new cards. I know it's not a race and it's normal etc. etc., but I'm way too competitive for my own good.

I guess they are pretty vital at the beginning when you don't know so many kanji, but I'd recommend moving away from using them when you improve, and just manually looking words up instead

KanjiTomo is the only one I've ever used, it seemed pretty good
>>
Is it okay to not do any new words in anki if I read instead?
>>
>>143293770
The brain is pretty weird. When you recall something, it tries to build a connection between any thoughts on your mind and the thing you recalled, without any regard for whether that connection makes any sense. Usually this won't be a problem because you'll find more and more connections, drowning out any connections that don't make any sense, but Anki fucks this up by just giving you a single connection per word, which isn't enough to drown out stray thoughts.

Basically, the solution is to read more.
>>
>>143294789
Absolutely not. Japanese kids up through university have to do their anki reps every day just to keep up and there have been multiple reports of adults completely forgetting how to read due to missing their reps. You really think you're better than the Japanese at their own language?
>>
>>143294789
No one's forcing you to study any particular way, but you'll probably retain vocabulary better if you do a few new words AND read a little.

There's something that's been bugging me for awhile that I think holds a significant key to advanced-level language learning, and that question is - "What were the questions in answers in middle/high school English class that I got wrong, and why did I get them wrong"? Putting aside the college-level English courses who questions I recall dealing with 18th century poetry, I certainly recall (particularly in middle school) plenty of normal questions on normal stories that I got wrong, and thinking back I have no idea why that is. Did I not know the words and I just guessed? Did I not know the grammar and I just misunderstood? If I could just figure out what made me fail English questions in middle and high school, I think I would have a much more accurate understanding of how to approach and interpret later-level Japanese comprehension.

(I am an English-speaking native if it isn't clear)

functional illiteracy

it's normal to be functionally illiterate until you're of late highschool age

that's why the best second-language-learner material is below that level
>>

Functional illiteracy seems to be primarily based on "real life" (i.e. job applications) rather than the broad spectrum of language to which I'm referring.

It's pretty annoying. The only interesting games i saw with full jap were Recettar and The house in fata morgana (VN tho). That's what makes it difficult. Things that you can look up are easy. Things that require hundreds of hours of experience to get a sense of the correct "feeling" are difficult.

Just because you know not to use そこに猫はいた doesn't mean they are trivial.

Learn english. "The X and Y Zs" is not equivalent to "the Zs of/in X and Y". At all. The "Zs" applies to the created group of X and Y. Not the individual parts. English grammar operates on phrases, not words, and does not recurse by default.

You cannot say something you don't mean and then accuse the other person of being dishonest when they interpret it the way that it literally means.

Thanks anon, I'll take that into consideration.

If I'm going to go the route of writing my own generator, can someone at least recommend a font that accurately mimics a decent handwritten style? There are too many small typographic differences between regular fonts and handwritten Japanese (e.g. さ, 水, etc) that I'm not aware of to pick a decent one.

Chinese, because at least Japanese has SOME phonetic characters. Chinese has none.

It's really a tragedy too, because Japan as a language lends itself PERFECTLY to a phoentic alphabet, much more than a lot of others.

If the Japs still used just Hiragana and Katakana like they did before they decided to include chinese characters in their writing system, every kid would be literate by like age 7.

>It's really a tragedy too, because Japan as a language lends itself PERFECTLY to a phoentic alphabet, much more than a lot of others.
It's precisely because it's phonology is so restrictive that a purely phonetic writing system would be awkward

It would all look like classical kana orthography, i.e. inconsistent spelling rules all over the place and heavy redundancy

I've got free access to a laser printer so I'd rather not go with the pre-21st century solution. My main goal is to have pre-printed characters (possibly with on and kunyomi readings) in a decent font that I can mimic. This isn't some grand request or anything and I have no idea why you guys are such raging cunts about it.

You could try to just look for a kanji workbook, I'm sure theres ones out there that have all the jouyou with at least one line for each kanji. It probably wouldn't even cost much more than it would take to print out all those pages
>>
>>143319027
I retain things better when I write them. It's just how I learn and I've been doing it that way for 25 years so I'm stuck in my ways. I also use flash cards (now Anki), but I can solidify things a lot better by writing it down. And if I'm going to write it down, I may as well do it properly.

>>
>>143319539
There's no shortage of scientific literature[1] that supports the idea that people learn better when writing things by hand. I've personally noticed that I have an easier time recalling characters that I know how to write. Maybe you don't like that method, and that's fine, but it's silly to try to dismiss it because of that.

http://www.otani.ac.jp/yomu_page/b_yougo/nab3mq0000000qsb.html
