Joseph broke the Ripple. He used it to fix literally everything and it made no sense. It was a generic "ability" that all the heroes used.

To distinguish JoJo from other similar manga, Araki came up with the idea of Stands after Part 2. The basic idea behind it was to make it so every hero and villain can have a unique ability, instead of it just endlessly being hamon vs. vampires/ultimate beings.

With Stands there can be established rules, each hero can have his/her own strength and weakness. Each villain can be genuinely unique. And characters don't have to be muscly to be dangerous. A baby nearly wipes the entire Part 3 party, and D'Arby uses his stand to capture your soul while gambling.

The variety and potential for Stands is limitless compared to hamon. And it allowed to Part 4, which is a slice of life compared to Part 3.

Araki hadn't thought of them yet. And also Stands are super rare before the Arrows appeared, there are very few who had them and they were mostly shit. The Arrows showed up in the 70s because SPOILERS. And Hamin is no longer used because there are no more vampires or Pillar Men, nor the means to make more of them. So it's only use was extended lifespan and health but Araki didn't want to go down the route of giving characters enhanced speed and strength like most shonen because he could write more interesting fights with characters who are only human and getting hit by a super ghost is actually a threat and usually can't be shrugged off. It was also around when DBZ took off and with it going down the powerlevel route, Araki decided he'd try the opposite direction and focus on creativity over power levels. Ripple could have been dropped a little more gracefully though.

Honestly, I think it pretty much did reach it's peak for battle ability with Battle Tendency (though trying to trick Dio to hit Joseph when infusing his Stand with Hamon was a pretty clever thought, even if that didn't work), but I genuinely wonder why it isn't practiced more simply for it's health benefits, at least by some.

Joseph looked pretty fucking amazing for his age in Stardust Crusaders, and 'Straizo' kind of set the precedent for practicing Hamon for the purpose of preserving his youth (looks and health).

Does the manga ever get as "epic" as it did in part 3?

Does Giorno really bond with anyone over part V, come to think of it? Most of the friendship-stuff seems to be the original gang with each other, Giorno always seems to be presented as something of an outsider who's more focused on the goal than anything.

I don't really know how much of this is simply due to bad translations, though. I've started liking Giorno a bit more since the never stuff (up to King Crimson part 1, I think) got re-translated and you can see the grandstanding Dio-like-traits of his, it gives him much more personality.

You're argument is already invalid. Ripple had its own established rules. Each Ripple in P2 manifested different qualities/fights. Really it was P1's Ripple that was generic and broken.

Of course, as we saw when Araki introduced Ripple plus additional rules (like Ripple during a chariot wagon coliseum race), Araki just fucking loves layering rules on stuff. Hence why even as deep into P8 we got to have a Stand fight that was also adhering to the rules of a beetle battle. Araki loves his games.

The real reason Stands took precedence over Ripple, from an analysis stand-point, is that Ripple was too strength-focused. It's not that Stands have so much more variability, it's that they remove the component of brute power as a factor in fights, so you were partially right in that respect.

I think that's a valid claim. It is suddenly and completely different. It also doesn't help that Araki doesn't even entertain the potential of Ripple in P3, instead he chooses to pretend like it never existed, which is extra ballbusting.

That being said, P3 is the worst-written part. You'll like Stands a lot more as the writing and battles around them improve, trust me.

Does it really seem like pedo shit? I mean, the baby was naked (important for plot-reasons) and Joseph was holding her without really knowing anything else about it. It'd be one of the only things you could tell, and if he was holding her safely (which he was, he's been down the parenthood road before) it'd be pretty evident.

What I found weird was Josuke's enraged reaction to it, he's the one who made an innocent situation into a gross one. I guess it makes sense given that he's a teenager with no experience with babies who'd get hysterical and immature about that stuff compared to Joseph, a father who's been down that road before. Probably the same with viewers, I doubt that anyone who's had much to do with babies would see the scene as lewd.

The fact that Pucci wanted a power up was literally the whole plot of the Part, so it's not an asspull and they're just speedreaders or idiots. Joseph and Jotaro don't get much character development over the course of their parts, but you'll notice that both characters also happen to be (basically) the only ones that appear in a bunch of parts. So the events of each part and the passage of time do end up resulting in character development. I started typing it all out but basically I can sum it all up in just a sentence or two. They don't get as much development compared to the other Joestars but in the following Parts they both take on a supportive / mentor role and in the Part after that they both own up to their horrible jobs as fathers and do what they can to fix their relationships with their kids. It's simple but it was enough where I can't really agree that they got no character development.
