The deaths of Nia and Senketsu perfectly fit into the themes of TTGL and KLK, and made sense to let their love interestes develop. But they both happened in shows made by Imaishi, so Imaishi killing off love interests became a meme.

So Nova "dying" in SPL was a reference to that meme, since SPL in its entirety was a clusterfuck of references to Gainax, Trigger, Imaishi, and their respective memes.

>A meme (/ˈmiːm/ MEEM)[1] is "an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture".[2] A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme.
Imaishi shows are an amalgamation of ideas from other (and better) series (usually mech) that he liked, and he combines them in a very sloppy way that his stupid fans think is clever. He tries to reference and pay homage to things he likes by mimicking ideas, even going so far as to pay homage to himself. Yes, his shows are literal memes per the actual fucking definition of the word.

Looks like your post is worthless, because you're an absolute fucking idiot who doesn't understand what words mean but just wanted to defend your favorite shit director.

>>

And as you posted the meme itself is defined as an "idea, behavior, or style." Those are what can "act as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme."

But Nia's death was entirely thematic, and was necessary to make the ending compatible with the message of TTGL. The Anti-Spiral restricted the spiral races because it was afraid of the destruction they could cause if free. But Simon defeated it because he thought people being free was far better than people living in oppression no matter what, and had faith that society would be able to deal with the consequences of that freedom. Nia's death was his personal consequence for his freedom, and him taking it in stride and simply moving on was him leading by example and displaying his great faith in society.
>>
>>143269426
>and who don't realize that Otaku in Japan who like mech anime and manga don't like him at all.
Which is why his shows always sell really well, right? Kill yourself.
>>
>>143269189
Technically speaking, it was an ending by gainax.

It was one of the best endings they've ever done, though. Pleiades had no business being as incredible as it was.
>>
>>143269452
>Nia's death was his personal consequence for his freedom,
Nia's death had nothing to do with any of the themes, and didn't make sense within the show. "Oh shit, we need to give Simon a sad ending to show that he made a hard choice" doesn't mean that his waifu turning into space particles fits into the themes.

And let's not forget that the fanbase can't even agree on the themes, seeing as half of them still think the central message is "do the impossible".
>>
>>143269109
It's more of an easter egg/shout out than a big reveal or anything but yeah. The FLCL manga artist, Hajime Ueda was the one who came up with the idea for the short.

Luluco is the most personal show of Trigger, I think there is a whole message in it.

Before the anime came out, Trigger's headquarters said that they wanted the studio to be more "normal", to produce more anime you can find in other companies. This resulted in the creation of Kiznaiver.

In the whole anime, Luluco is trying hard to be normal, to have a normal life because she thinks this is the right thing to do to be happy, but later on in the last season, she discovers that she can be happy by creating her own normality, live the way she wants. Luluco's life is not normal, she likes it and everyone likes it. The last episode reveals that she is the studio Trigger itself, the message is clear. They wanted to show to the world that creating original anime that goes beyond the normal way to make anime is what they like and that's what they want to make.

I think that they wanted Luluco to be a longer series, perhaps not even a short but Trigger's headquarters gave all the budget to the more "normal" show Kiznaiver, the message may come from here. In the end, Kiznaiver is a flop and I'm not sure but I think Luluco was a success in Japan. Good thing.

I literally just explained why Nia's death is thematic. But instead of refuting that by explaining how it doesn't link into a theme, you just said "no its not".

And why can't "freedom is worth its consequences" and "people should strive to do the impossible" both be equally present messages? There's no weird rule that states that a show can only have one message. In fact, plenty of shows have multiple. And they're both pretty linked if you think about it. People doing feats which were thought impossible is a very reccuring thing in the history of people fighting for freedom. The American forces winning against the much larger and better equipped British forces in the War of Independance, Gandhi overthrowing British rule in India without having lifted a finger in violence, Nelson Mandela becoming the president of South Africa, etc etc.

>I literally just explained why Nia's death is thematic
No you didn't, you grasped at a bunch of half baked ideas in the show and said "The theme is showing how willing he is to sacrifice things to advance humanity!" which is bullshit. From the ground up, her death is stupid. She's biologically spiral and somehow still has anti-spiral genes, she dies when they die because of hivemind, despite her not being part of the hivemeind (she acts and thinks on her own), she dies to show Simon isn't selfish and can move on, but he was never selfish in the first place, the concept they pulled out of their ass to justify it was that anti-spirals feared humanity's advancement and eventual fate and that Simon needed to not abuse spiral power (the device being "you can revive people, and your wife dies, but that abuses the power") and yet the human race continues to advance at an unnatural rate even after Nia dies by using spiral energy, and this somehow isn't an issue. The entire thing was garbage because Imaishi thinks "muh bittersweet" makes the ending more mature, but he has no idea how to frame it.

>And why can't "freedom is worth its consequences" and "people should strive to do the impossible"
Because rolling over and accepting your wife dying because of plot cancer is diametrically opposed to doing the impossible. You literally can't have both. "Doing the impossible" would be keeping her AND not fearing the anti-spiral.

>There's no weird rule that states that a show can only have one message.

Not that anon.

I don't know about you, or how true is the Okada meme is, I don't even watch Kiznaiver, nor any other of her works as far as I know, but one thing I'm going to say inb4 you start sucking his dick: Imaishi is not a good writer, his forte is animation. And this has been the general consensus for years, even before Trigger's foundation.

He's good at building hype, his Kaneda style is pretty cool and fun, if you want crack and lolrandom stories, he's your guy, but he's the kind of animator/director that'a better suited for shorts if he takes the helm. For longer series, he needs to team with someone else.

Or are you going to forget how much Nakashima's KLK story was fucked over flashiness and "FUN"?. And I'm saying this as someone who thought KLK was alright and enjoyed it.

Take another example with this. Luluco was cute and fun, but by all purposes it doesn't stop being just a big Trigger ad with just a simple premise.

>She's biologically spiral and somehow still has anti-spiral genes,
Are you actually trying to apply scientific logic to a show where people's feelings fuel weaponised robots that can magically grow to a size greater than a galaxy if their pilot believes in them enough?

>she dies when they die because of hivemind, despite her not being part of the hivemeind (she acts and thinks on her own)
This is never firmly established, nothing about the workings of the Anti-Spiral really is, the explanation for her death is blurry and just relies on your suspension of disbelief, like everything in this ridiculous, over the top show does. I really don't know why you have a huge problem with this particular element of fantasy but nothing else.

>she dies to show Simon isn't selfish and can move on, but he was never selfish in the first place
No, you're right, Simon was never shown being selfish. But his decision to choose freedom would have been, if not for Nia's death. On a grand scale, he chose freedom over safety, knowing that people would suffer in the future because of this decision. But that's okay for him right? In the present, he gets to just go home and live as a hero along with his beautiful wife. Except he doesn't. Because even when making this decision, he knows that it will cost Nia's life. He chooses to lose the person he loves in order to gain freedom, which is representative on a greater scale of his decision to make humanity face losses due to the freedom he forced upon them. Sure, Nia's death wasn't really explained and came as a shocker to the audience, which I can understand people seeing as a flaw, but it was established that Simon knew it was going to happen and caused it anyway, which makes it perfectly serve its purpose thematically.

Not that guy and as much as I adore Imaishi's works, TTGL wasn't entirely original in terms of storytelling. It's Getter Robo and other pieces of media slapped together.

The difference with TTGL is that they had a clear goal in mind as they went through the episodes. The style and constant upping of the ante was used brilliantly because it flowed naturally with the progression of the story. There are a lot of works where it's just done for the sake of being cool. TTGL was a mostly complete work, even if it wasn't an entirely original one.

>Are you actually trying to apply scientific logic to a show where people's feelings fuel weaponised robots that can magically grow to a size greater than a galaxy if their pilot believes in them enough?
Oh, we're doing the "fuck logic" approach? Then why didn't her super badass spiral genes just overwrite the bad ones?

>the explanation for her death is blurry and just relies on your suspension of disbelief,
That's called a contrivance. Imaishi thinks he's making a super mature and powerful message, but can't weave it into the story so you need to just accept his shitty plot device and "feel" what he's going for. That's bad writing.

>No, you're right, Simon was never shown being selfish. But his decision to choose freedom would have been, if not for Nia's death.
Again, contrivance. That's shitty writing. If you can't set up the idea and work the themes into the story, you can't hamfist it in because you think it's a good them and then just expect the audience to ignore that you pulled the entire thing out of your ass.

>which makes it perfectly serve its purpose thematically.
No it doesn't. The theme's you're pretending were there were simply not there in the story. The anti-spiral and Simon yelling at each other in the finale and Simon then letting his wife die to show his maturity (which we've already established didn't make sense because he was never shown to be immature or selfish) does not retroactively make the show about those themes. Literally yelling out the ideas doesn't mean they're supported by the show, it's incredibly shallow and half-baked.

It's because they don't look all that similar, the only thing i see them sharing is the eye color, but the eye shape, the body type, the hair color, the hair shape, almost everything else is completely different.

For a 7 minute episode show, this was pretty damn good.

JUSTIIIICE.

Was there even any competition for Luluco to face? BnHA was regular shonen, Flying Witch got old quick, so did Tanaka, Kiznaiver and Mayoiga...yeah, ReZero I heard has mixed opinions and Kabaneri was AoT clone so there was nothing to stop Trigger from unleashing hell this season.

Kuma Miko was shaping up until it shit its pants so hard it ruined at least two people's careers

So what exactly are the trigger girls besides mascots? I remember when a bunch of new Trigger series and shorts were announced all at the same time including Luluco, Kiznaiver, and the upcoming mecha anime. Are the trigger girls going to get shorts or an OVA of their own?

I think Concrete Revolutio was overall better.
As original, more ambitious, more effort into the actual writing, good animation and a fantastic ending (this is an outstanding accomplishment considering it is a Bones original).

Luluco was great as well though.

Besides the eye color, the streak in Luluco's hair that forms the tail of the shooting star is the exact same color as Trigger's hair.

The last few episodes are anime original and basically have Machi bullied until she's mindbroken from her crippling social anxiety. She's told she doesn't have to think about difficult things anymore and reverts to being completely unaware of anything beyond her village.

Anne Happy is on the same level as Luluco, but I don't think it's fair to directly compare them due to the formats. Luluco has lots of very expressive animation that is impossible for a low budget full length show to compete with. However, Anne Happy's narrative complexities and small details are beyond even what was packed into Luluco.

It doesn't fucking matter, it was a great season because we got Luluco and Anne Happy.

Kuma Miko had an anime-original ending that bungled everything so badly the writer deleted all his accounts and fans are pre-emptively looking at future anime he's working on and getting worried. Not only that but the mangaka denounced the ending but also said that she didn't bother to check the scripts because she figured they were professionals, which has garnered her heavy criticism and made her look like a fucking idiot.

I admit that the stuffs in TTGL aren't exactly original as they've taken elements from other work like the Getter Ray and such. But am i the only one here that doesn't care?

Like you've said, Imaishi's (or the people at Gainax/Trigger) abilities are style and execution and that was the thing that got everybody hooked up. It would be useless if you had original ideas but lack presentation talents.

That being said, i think Imaishi is not as good anymore as he was during the TTGL days. I love TTGL but i'm not a fan of him anymore these days.
>>

This was so freaky I thought it was happening for real for a minute, Yoshio compares her to a sacrifice and that she needs to die for the good of the village

And then the last scene where she just gives up on her dream and acts like mind broken doll when Natsu gives her the new tablet he ordered for her. I wasn't sure if she was joking about not knowing a what a tablet is or she'd had some kind of traumatic retrograde amnesia that wipes all knowledge of technology from her memory.

>Why are you people mad at this? Everyone loved Machi bullying in the first threads, she going that mad due to it only makes it better.
Because it appeared to be light hearted jesting initially where social anxiety was being exaggerated for comedy. In the end Natsu and Yoshio would always show her how her fears were unfounded and there would be a generally positive outcome, here "all is lost" there is a massive regression and she just gives up.

Despite the bullying, Machi's goal was always to go to the city and learn about things from beyond her village. It was bearable until it got to the point that she went against her original intentions and everyone else in the series welcomed it with open arms.

>the concept they pulled out of their ass to justify it was that anti-spirals feared humanity's advancement and eventual fate
What? How is the main villain's motivation, which had been hinted at clearly for a fully 12 episodes at least, and fully explained in full in the final episode, an asspull?

>and that Simon needed to not abuse spiral power (the device being "you can revive people, and your wife dies, but that abuses the power")
What are you on about? How does he "abuse" spiral power? He just uses it, like every other spiral race, to win. As is in their very nature, the spiral instinct being what lets them survive. How is that abusing your power? The reason he decides, or rather, Imaishi decided not to let him, revive Nia was that it would invalidate his sacrifice and the message of the show.

>and yet the human race continues to advance at an unnatural rate even after Nia dies by using spiral energy, and this somehow isn't an issue.
No, it isn't an issue. The entire plot of the show was that Simon beat the Anti-Spiral and gained humanity the freedom to advance, even if that would cause problems down the line. The message being that freedom is better than oppression, no matter the price.

>The entire thing was garbage because Imaishi thinks "muh bittersweet" makes the ending more mature, but he has no idea how to frame it.
No, he just didn't want to throw away the themes presented throughout the entire show by having a happy, lovey dovey ending. I can agree that the things in the ending were poorly explained and as you said, badly framed. But I massively prefer that over the story spending 26 episodes building up a message, then throwing it away in the 27th because he couldn't explain everything up to the perfectionist standard of an anonymous nerd on a message board.

>"Doing the impossible" would be keeping her AND not fearing the anti-spiral.
Good point, maybe I was wrong on that, I'll keep that in mind.

>>
>>143271282
>>143271282
>why didn't her super badass spiral genes just overwrite the bad ones?
Because that wouldn't have been concurrent with the message at all. TTGL sacrifices logic for thematicism, not just randomly.

>Imaishi thinks he's making a super mature and powerful message
If he did, he wouldn't have devoted an entire episode to a hotsprings scene, complete with all the previous Gainax heroines jiggling their tits in Kamina's face. He just presented a simple message throughout a simple, fun show. A concept that you cannot wrap your strange little mind around for some reason.

>so you need to just "feel" what he's going for
No, you just need to understand what he's going for by it literally happening on screen. Simon says that they knew Nia would die if they gained freedom, but will just have to accept it.

>If you can't set up the idea and work the themes into the story, you can't hamfist it in because you think it's a good them and then expect the audience to ignore that you pulled the entire thing out of your ass
But he did set it up and work it into the story. Simon first finds his reason for fighting the Genome is for people to be free, but Genome warns him that destruction will follow that freedom. This is then reiterated severa times by Nia while possessed by the Anti Spiral, and by the Anti Spiral itself in the final confrontation. The names of things, with Genome being called the Spiral King, a symbol of oppressive monarchy, the music with the fucking iconic ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER. Everything in TTGL is set up to convey that message from the start.

>does not retroactively make the show about those themes
But they always were, in every aspect, from the characters motivations, to the music, to what literally fucking happens on screen. Simon kills a king and gives people freedom. This causes people to suffer greatly. Even in the face of this, Simon destroys a hive mind to give people even more freedom, knowing that it will vause more suffering.
>>
>>143272450
>How is the main villain's motivation
The whole bit about "You'll become the nemsis and have to give things up" was absolutely an asspull. Nothing naturally led to that conclusion.

>What are you on about? How does he "abuse" spiral power?
Reviving her would be an abuse. Learn to read.

>The entire plot of the show was that Simon beat the Anti-Spiral and gained humanity the freedom to advance,
And the entire message that it ended with was "You can't selfishly use Spiral Power to advance or get too strong or you'll cause black holes" but somehow it's only an issue when it could mean Imaishi doesn't get his "mature" bittersweet ending.
>>
>>143272340
Jiro becomes Justice/Godzilla? The public had a mostly positive view of superhumans, hat guy became a portal for the yokai to escape into a new world away from humans, Kikko remained a cute, Earth-chan got rebuilt by Judas while Super-Detective gets rebuilt by black science man. Then they have reports of aliens coming to invade Earth so possible movie to show that?
>>
>>143272450
>he just didn't want to throw away the themes presented throughout the entire show
Factually wrong. Screaming the themes out at the end does absolutely not mean they were there the whole time. Nothing in the show led up to that ending.

>perfectionist standard
No, just standards in general.

>Good point
Of course it is. The actual theme and the "look at my ending that totally makes thematic sense" theme are 100% at odds and incompatible.

His response to her death was compatible with the message of TTGL, but her death itself was not necessary.

I don't think so, the point of the alien invasion warning is to show that even if superheroes are gone, they will always come back when children voices call them again. Everything was concluded, there is no need for movie.

Tbh, I see it as more as Trigger wants to make anime that no one else seems to want to take the risk of doing. What other anime features characters from other shows that are from the same studio? Unless i'm mistaken, this is the first of it's kind and I think Trigger is making a Universe of its studio instead of just making shows be a one-and-done. I wouldn't doubt it if Luluco had been longer, we would've gotten cameos from Hackadoll, Inou Battle and Ninja Slayer. I'm damn shocked they decided to add one of the Japan Expo productions into the show.

Not the same studio but CB Chara Go Nagai World was a three episode OVA of a bunch of Go Nagai works smashed together with a semicoherent plot.

It's interesting that Trigger actually created Luluco as a regularly airing full cour series given the content though. It being a short shows they couldn't take TOO many risks with it.

>Nothing naturally led to that conclusion.
Apart from Nia stating it like, 10 episodes before the finale. Have you actually seen TTGL? Did you just read a very rough draft of the plot or some shit?

>Reviving her would be an abuse.
But he doesn't revive her. Bc that would invalidate everything.

>"You can't selfishly use Spiral Power to advance or get too strong or you'll cause black holes"
But that wasn't the message at all. Where are you getting this from? Again, have you actually seen TTGL?

>>143272709
>That's bad writing.
>contrivances are bad, plain and simple
Okay. But I was never saying that TTGL didn't have contrivances. I was saying that it's thematically strong and that Nia's death served a purpose. But you claimed otherwise, and have done nothing to back that up. All you've done is cry "contrivances" and say that the show isn't absolutely telling you to do the impossible. Which I have conceded, it isn't.

>The final message was that Simon needed to not be selfish and make a sacrifice for the greater good. When did that get set up outside the very end?
That isn't the message. I've said multiple times now that the message is "Freedom is better than opression, even if it has consequences." Which is presented throughout the entire show. And most prominently in the finale. Nia died because Simon destroyed the Anti Spiral and gained feedom. Simon accepting Nia's death was him accepting the consequences of that freedom.

But what does it matter if Imaishi isn't particularly big with mecha otaku? He's never been especially a part of that community in the first place, his work with TTGL and NGE (and to a lesser extent, FLCL) notwithstanding and even then I know for a fact that his hand in the sakuga direction on both are still well regarded by fans and the industry itself.

Like, where even are you basing this claim that people liking him is based entirely on "redditors" and westerners? Hell, mecha otaku are a dying breed in Japan and hardly a voice in the industry themselves. What makes them so significant that their opinion of him matters?
>>
Senketsu dying made sense and the OVA made his death less tragic because his spirit is still around watching over Ryuko. Nia dying was just bullshit because looking at the rest of the ending Simon never got over it and became a hobo.
>>
>>143273326
To add to your point, people need to remember that neither Nia nor Simon wanted to bring her back to life. That's their choice and they're free to make it. Just like Simon called Rossiu out for forcing people underground to come up to the surface and "progress", the show has always been consistent about "you do you" as long as you don't get in others' way.
