It was my first anime as a kid (not counting things like Voltron that were actually broadcast in the US)

I was around back in the day, but it was 20 years ago so this is IIRC. Akane shipping was the majority faction, Ukyo shippers were a vocal minority. One of the major Ukyo shippers wrote a "darkfic" where Ranma and Akane married, Ranma started going to a support group for battered spouses, and eventually both he and Ukyo were murdered by Akane.

I think Shampoo and Kodachi shipping was mostly confined to AU-ish fics that drastically altered character personalities.

I think that the Ranma-type take on gender bender in media is the most frustrating shit ever conceived by man, only followed by the always shit "WaCKy MiSundERsTANdiNGs!!" trope.

It pretty much puts an iron seal on the story, it ensures that no character will ever evolve in any way, that no action will have consequence, that no theme will ever be touched.
And I don't even mean it in a "the status quo must be preserved at episode end" kind of way. Even inside the same episode, even in those 20 minutes, you just know, nothing will have any consequence, nothing that will last even for a single minute.

Even shitty episodic shows have arcs that span 20 minutes, but Ranma doesn't. Nothing has any effect, the throwaway joke is so bland and uninspired in all of its iterations, that it would make absolutely no difference if the joke was that Ranma only changed hair color instead of gender.

Fuck I'm so mad.

As a Kodachifag, the last point really kills it for me. I like the idea of her having a softer nonpsychotic attitude, but I believe that things must be properly developed and properly led up to in order for it to work nicely. But almost every fanfic author would all of a sudden have Kodachi acting in a certain way, or there'd be a REALLY simple trigger that changes her, to accommodate for the ship and she'd seem like a completely different character.

It's supposed to be hard to make something like that happen and make sense, because that's what'll make it more honest. I don't think Kodachi would get rid of her psychotic streak so easily, and I'm not ready to believe in a simple childhood memory being a catalyst that can lead up to a simple solution to make her sane. It's really bad, deus-ex-machina level writing.

Maison Ikkoku is probably her best work. Not the most creative or off the wall, but the most character development (for Godai and Kyoko, anyway) and a deeply satisfying ending. I just finished collecting the flipped/sized-down rerelease (had to buy a bunch of them used on eBay, so there's library stickers and shit, but new from that series costs like $60 now), planning on rereading it soon.

Akane trains her ass off too. One of the first times we see her she's doing kata and shattering cinder blocks. It's the difference between a hardworking swimmer and a hardworking Michael Phelps. She's Yamcha, he's Goku, no matter how hard she tries. And hey, everyone who shows up after him is stronger than her too. I'd just like to see her able to kick a little more ass, since she's literally fighting off an entire high school in the first volume.

Ranma spent most of his life ONLY practicing martial arts. Akane has something called a social life and school, and it's hard to tell whether she actually trained from a really young age. Ranma treated nearly everything as a martial arts experiment either by interest or by persuasion from his dad. Honestly, I think its more that the joke is that while Ranma calls her a tomboy, shes not really that tomboyish. She almost always wears dresses, and she was shown to be rather feminine in many ways. Plus, despite Ranma being over all masculine, he had more than a few "girly moments" of his own, and I don't mean how whenever he tried to deceive Ryouga that his first methods would usually be to go for the Bugs Bunny playbook and pretend to be a girl.
The source of their bickering is really that she has a short temper and Ranma usually intentionally pushes her buttons. There were more than a few times where her reactions towards him were not unwarranted. And how both of them are extremely tsundere.


Also, while I won't deny that Akari is bland and boring, be it anime or manga, I'd actually enjoy if Konatsu got more screen time. I just always found him amusing.

But Ranma had been trained in extreme ways from an early age. Despite how he often seemed, Genma still trained Ranma to the limit and beyond for most of his life. And Genma is an idiot, so he did stupid stuff that most would not think to try. And that was before Cologne came into the picture and pushed him even further.

The series is rife with people Akane loses to. The only asses she ever kicks are boys from Furinkan and Kuno, none of whom are on her level, and Ranma, who refuses to actually fight her back. Once you reach her level, she jobs to the entire cast and crew, the sound guy, the gaffer, the key grip, the orchestra, Rumiko's four lesbian assistants, the caterer, and the FedEx guy who makes her sign for shit. The second the Saotomes enter her life, she's reduced to being nothing so profoundly they made an original OAV about how badly she actually sucks once the world outside Daddy's dojo comes knocking.

You do realize that Tahakashi had editors and the like pushing her work towards certain points. She's been creatively overwritten before.

Heck, I'm almost positive that she was forced to dial down Akane fighting and have the fights focus on Ranma.

The original concept for the series was Ranma and Akane dealing with wacky martial arts themed events, developing as a couple. This would require both of them to fight.

You can see her concept being changed though, even pretty early on. I'm pretty convinced that during the Rhythmic Gymnastics Arc, Akane suddenly out of nowhere tripping and spraining her ankle being a forced change by the editors to have the Male lead being the one to do all major fights.

Because think about it from a dramatic perspective. If Akane had fought Kodachi, it would have been her fighting to preserve her relationship with Ranma. An important step forward in the couple's development. I'm pretty sure that's what she was going for in that arc before a sudden last minute change.

I fucking loved Maison Ikokku, I couldn't stop watching it once I got around the half, I literally binged 50 episodes in one weekend.

Do manga's like Ranma still exist? I gave up on Anime after K-On happened. I never really liked Ranma that much because I hated the characterization and the story was meh but it held a special place in my heart. Anime today seems to be just moe-blob loli harem garbage and I can't be bothered to search in a genre/medium I'm not particularly attuned to.

I'm not sure if the quality of anime as a whole has gone down or if we just have access to twice as much shit thanks to the Internet. I mean even when I was hunting for VHSes in the Special Interests section at Best Buy they were releasing crap like Burn Up W and Agent Aika alongside Slayers and Ranma.

I do think there's less "accessible" anime released these days. You could show the first couple episodes of Ranma to a normie and probably get a laugh or two. Newer shows? Not so much.
