It took me easily around a month, it was so long ago that I don't remember, but I really went over the top practising writing them over and over again, I was just so fascinated with the fact that I knew them that I really didn't care about moving on with my studies at all for a while afterwards, I wasn't in any kind of rush at the time
>>
>>143148142
If japanese is so nuanced, why do they need the english word for it?
>>
>>143147723
2 weeks, I still slow down on katakana though. too sharp for me.
>>
>>143147723
What's 'comfortable' for you? For me it's only comfortable if I stop making mistakes ever, and thus it took me some good ~2-3 months to get into hiragana. Therefore I'm still not comfortable with katakana but that's mostly because I don't see it nearly as often and シツケク are gay when I'm trying to read things quickly.
>>
Does anyone has the cat eating fish picture? お願いします
>>
>>143147723
No clue, before I knew it I could read hiragana comfortably.
You don't need to go out of your way to study hiragana after the initial learning phase (which should only last a few days), you'll encounter them enough that they'll be second nature soon enough.

Katakana is still a bitch thou
>>
>>143148359

>>
When you people complain about not being able to read shit after being studying for so long is it just about kanji or does grammar also take too long to sink in? How much did you read for your grammar reaching a confortable level where you're not sure if you got something wrong every few pages?

>>
>>143148452
It's vocab. You can study for over a year and still run into 20 new words in under a minute of reading, it's a joke.
>>
>>143148456
Seems I'm not the only one playing PS2-exclusive VNs through PCSX2
>>
>>143148490
Doing only anki for a year isn't studying anon.
>>
>>143148452
Grammar can be a bitch if you can't think through it logically (though this is more at the beginning stage) and it depends on how complex the material is.
Kanji is the main offender really. We'll never know why Japs and other Asians didn't just spell words out with their alphabets.
>>
>>143148452
For me it's always grammar, if you encounter a new kanji or new vocabulary it takes all of a few seconds to look that shit up, but grammar constructions that you don't understand are a cunt to look up (if you even can) and an even bigger cunt to make sense of

Although you do run into vocab that you don't know a hell of a lot more frequently than you run into grammar you don't know, it just feels like less of a struggle with vocab

>>143148798
because "get the hang of grammar" is way too vague
there's always going to be room to improve

in about half a year I was fine with my comprehension of most written material, as long as I had a dictionary, but I didn't read a single manga in those six months
all I did was study kanji and watch subbed anime
>>
>>143149030
How? You can learn kanji just fine from home. The nuances of the language not.
>>
>>143149030
If you want to "get the hang of the grammar down", it's gunna take a lot more than 10 manga that's for sure

Just wrote hiragana characters about 10 times in a row for each.Took me maybe half an hour? Then I started doing genki first reading then writing (looking chars up whenever i didn't know how to read or write them.). Honestly writing was a bit pain in the ass, but it was obviously better then grinding. I think it took me about 2 chapters to get fully comfortable.

How is Genki? I find myself struggling through even a single chapter of tae kim. Not for difficulty, but it's hardly engaging, and I usually feel like I could lay down and take a nap after reading it for a bit.

To be fair though the sushi is usually left out for a few minutes and I don't know if they replace them, so that might have an effect on the flavor.

Dude. "Authentic" Japanese sushi is on a revolving line for hours, they just spray water on it so it looks fresh.

最も means "most" as in "greatest extreme", not "majority", and is a prime example of why you should not be translating at a beginner level.

he did translate that part correctly, he just also put a "most" in front of "human beings" for some reason

>>143154103
That's the part that was confusing me - it seemed more natural that parents would contact the school. The translation (by near-bilingual grill) was basically "Please contact the school", but から sounds like the other way around. I don't really understand why.

well I don't have the context, but that sentence sounds like it's referring to children in the school

Upon second glance he did put "most unbearable feeling" in that other panel. But I would bet that he put "most humans" because of 最も - the first dictionary is "most", so, hey, why not put "most humans"?

I'm not claiming to be an expert by any means but that is a rookie mistake.

>"I don't particularly support learning vocab before you encounter it in the wild either, you should do Core to get a foundation but after that all my words are mined when I encounter them.
And what makes you think there's a difference between finding vocab through reading then adding it to a vocab deck and encountering a vocab for the first time in core itself instead? In core you have the example sentence, when mining you have the context. Both slip into irrelevance after like 3 lapses, or do you know even half your mined vocabs' origins?
Whether you learn grammar before or after seeing it in native material and whether you learn vocab before or after first encountering it while reading doesn't matter. It's not something you can't understand without "true" Japanese as your context, in the end everything grammatically right works as context.
Stop preaching your own learning method so hard, it makes it really obvious that you're just trying to convince yourself you're not doing anything wrong, which is already a pointless worry in itself."

このトレーラーは
{This trailer}

燃料電池や太陽光などを併用する、今や稼働しているだけでも貴重なハイブリッド・カー
{Combining things like fuel cells and solar energy} {Now valuable even if they just operate} → {Hybrid cars}
This is the most complex part, but a sentence doesn't end after a comma, so I can only assume that this ~する clause is augmenting the ハイブリッド・カー.

だと思われますが、
{Seems like, but}

常用しているエネルギー源は
{Commonly using} → {Energy source}

No. "Okinawa" has only been part of Japan since 1879, and karate was around long before that.

>>143173595
Ryukyu was an actual country, unlike Wales which never actually existed before the English created it (same with Ireland, actually).

Do we have a list of recommended niconico channels?
I would like to listen to some natives.

I'm gonna be reinstalling my OS at some point in the next few days (maybe later today, even).

Is there a way to save my Anki data? I don't have any other device which I could sync it to.
>>
>>143174377
It syncs to ankiweb, you don't need another device to stick it on
>>

How expensive will Japan college education be for you? You're doing actual classes with other 日本人 and not the foreign exchange classes, right?

I know Korea college is cheap for foreigners, actual classes or exchange classes (even cheaper).
I tried learning hangeul for 2 months, but realized that my interest in it wasn't really that high as I thought.
>>
>>143174377
Doesn't Anki sync to their website? If it doesn't you can export decks with progress.
>>
>>143174419
Ah, I see. Thanks.

>>143174444

How many months are you into Japanese?
>>
When doing kanji/vocabulary, is it important to be able to say it in japanese or is it ok to just know it directly in english without saying it?
>>
>>143175710
Only 2, I was just wondering, really. A total NEET like me most likely won't ever get in, but it's not stopping me from trying.
>>
>>143175992
No, the reading is more important than the meaning.
>>
>>143175992
If you don't know how to say it in japanese you won't know how to actually read it don't you think.
>>
>>143175992
Both

I'd say focusing on remembering the reading is actually a little more important than the meaning a lot of the time
>>
>>143175992
>kanji
If you're doing isolated kanji learn readings only for kanji with 1 or 2 readings. Don't bother with shit like 上, you'll learn it while doing vocab.

>vocabulary
Why the fuck would you even learn it if you don't know how it's pronounced?
>>
>>143161680
Don't you dare come anywhere near my university you little shit. Also the first year will fuck your shit up, better prepare your asshole. It's relatively smooth sailing afterwards if you survive however.

I feel like being more familiar with linguistics doesn't come from growing up with two languages but from growing up and studying a language in school that's not as basic as English. Hell some people ITT don't know what passive voice is, wouldn't be surprised if they aren't familiar with terms like conjunction and preposition either.
Not that that's their fault for growing up where they did.
>>
>>143178298
I know what all of those are from middle school and I'm a English and Japanese only peasant. The people who don't know those are not the English monolinguals.
>>
>>143178491
the people who don't know them are children, hicks, and ESLs who were never taught english grammar
>>
私はその晩興奮のあまり寝られなかった。

Why is there a の after 興奮. It doesn't serve as a nominalizer, nor is it describing sleep.
>>
>>143179220
のあまり is a seperate word, it means "so X that Y", in that case "so excited that you can't sleep"
>>
>>143179220
noamari means overwhelmed

the excitement on that evening was so overwhelming i couldn't sleep
