ただ is more versatile
i guess you could use it in some contexts as a replacement for 単に, like ただの
彼は単に冗談としてそれを言った→
彼はただの冗談としてそれを言った
the grammatical structure is different though as you can see
ただ can also mean "free" "ordinary/common" "but/nevertheless" etc. unlike 単に
but jisho can tell you as much

In Classical Japanese there was a grammatical distinction between simply past tense and 完了 (some action or state being finished).

You have past sense done by き (past the speaker experienced) and けり (past the speaker didn't experience). たり is one way to expess 完了. In modern Japanese this is simply translated as ...た, like you can see on the site or when possible …てしまった to express the 完了 nuance stronger. Past tense and 完了 could be even combined. If I still had my Classical Japanese reading book, I'd show you an example. Anyway, two other uses for this たり are present contunious and the current …たり…たり grammar. Again, this is on the page.

There's also a second たり, the one meaning である/です. Remnant of this is the たる者 grammar from N1. See pic about is usage. Example: 政治家たる者、賄賂を受けるべからず。
>>
>>143087386
Did you study classical japanese? Would you recommend any resources for it?
Some other anon mentioned Classical Japanese: A Grammar. I'm thinking of buying a copy since I can't find scans and I want a good source to learn classical grammar from.

Yotsubato's reading pack's deck if you want to read Yotsubato early on (which would be a good thing)
RTK or KD if you want to learn kanji individually (which may or may not be a good thing depending on which learning methods you personally prefer)
DOJG's deck is good for getting familiar with Japanese grammar in general and you can always look stuff up in it through the browser just like in the regular book. Some anons dislike it, although I don't see a downside to it. Personally I'd recommend suspending all the repeat cards with the answer on the front side.

It literally says that Europe is a strong hybrid-race-continent. More liberally, I suppose you could interpret it as "Europe is a strong continent of various peoples".

Since we have Mongols (Finns and Hungarians) and T*rks (Balkan peoples, Ukrainians and part of T*rkey itself) here, I guess it's not wrong.

I'd say as soon as you introduce the romance element it kind of overshadows it from just being a pure SoL, even if it does still retain a lot of what you'd typically find in SoL, besides I said in my original post "akin to what you get in most SoL anime", which tend to never touch on romance at all

Not true at all. Haruhi is THE archetypal SoL show, and features both a strong male protagonist presence and romance. Same with Hyouka, Clannad etc. You don't seem to like SoL but rather exclusively the CGDCT subgenre within it.

I'm pretty sure the archetypal SoL would be something like K-on or Lucky Star, there are way more SoL series that follow that format than there are that follow the format of something like Haruhi

It doesn't make much sense to have a subgenre for the dominant fork and purest form of the genre, it would instead make more sense to classify series that include romance ontop of SoL such as Clannad as a different subgenre from SoL, or series that dabble in many different genres other than SoL such as Haruhi as different

Without context would be impossible to know.

When there's no subject, I always assume the speaker, and in this case, if you think about it, it doesn't sound correct if it's not the speaker:

A. "I told you not to embarrass our family!"
B. "You told me not to embarrass our family!"

Now think of which context would B ever make sense knowing the preceding sentence:
"What are YOU doing?"

Also, I'd always suggest to assume the speaker, at least most of the times there's a line like this, when it's option B, they usually always say って言ってくれたんだ!
>>

>Without context would be impossible to know.
That's what I thought. It's just a comment by a mob character so no real context in the first place. Guess nips just default to speaker like you say then.

Do most people here type with kanji or hiragana/katakana? I just started a few days ago and i can pick out a few characters but not all yet and i was wondering.

Also, if you come across a kanji you dont know, would the solution be to find it in a dictionary? Or google it? Or is it easy to figure out through some way.
>>
>>143092059
It looks exactly like 例外, and there's no other possibilities UNLESS they're not on EDICT.

Is there a character named Ami? That looks like a tiny み...

"I won't accept this...!!"
"Ami is an exception tho!!"

Basis is that there's no other kanjis with タ radical/bushu that makes words with anything else other than 外.
>>
>>143092245
By typing do you mean using google IME and the like?

If you come across a kanji you don't know you can use OCR. Google translate lets you draw the characters and recognizes them. Jisho's radical search works too.

Chances are you already know most of the entry level words. Do 30. Set new cards to 3 steps if you're worried about retention. If you are an autistic NEET and you're absolutely sure you can spend more than half an hour on reviews without giving up after a couple of months then you can do more but no more than 40. When you feel that it's too much or almost all the words are new set new cards to 0 and do only the reps until you have healthy amount of daily reps. Then switch to 20.
>>
>>143098399
Lots of people manage 30. I've never seen anyone do more than that consistently every day for months though.

>>143098601
Adding on to this:

If your brain is literally full of holes and you can't remember fucking jack shit and you have a thousand reviews a day, go no lower than 5 new cards per day. Absolutely everyone who's capable of learning new things can learn at least five new things per day. 5 is the absolute bare minimum for the most incredibly disabled of people. I don't mean autism. I don't mean brainfarting. I don't mean having a shitty memory. I mean literally completely unable to function or even dress yourself. In fact, if you need to lower it down to 5 cards per day, you probably aren't capable of reading and understanding this post that I'm writing right now, so limit yourself to 10 instead. And remember: that's for the most incredibly broken of people, not just people who are autistic or have extremely bad ADHD.

I don't know, I find core's vocab more "useful" than the one I mine, and I mine everything I don't know that's not some obscure chuuni word so it's not like I make my mining deck unnecessarily hard for me or anything. I prefer core over all.
Although ever since I started using that one pro rikai dictionary for my imports my mining cards turned turbo legit.

Is there any alternative to the default J-E dictionary that's not shit or a J-J EPWING dictionary that's not outputting walls of text where a straightforward vocab card should be?

You clearly haven't actually learned japanese yet. Sure you can probably get to an intermediate level easily but you could get to an intermediate level in french or spanish or german or whatever pretty easily without learning Japanese, so why haven't you done all of those?

You do anki to get familiar with vocab, eventually you stop needing the translation to recognize the kanji and recall its meaning.

Of course, this relies on you reading a lot.

It's manual. I configured my mining setup to have rikai import mapped to R, and save to file mapped to E. Whenever I mine a word, I press both R and E. R just saves it as Rikai normally does, and E puts each new word on a new line in a .txt file I call vocab.txt. After each reading session I go into the text file and copy every new word in vocab.txt into another text file called vocabupdate.txt. I run vocabupdate.txt through Epwing2Anki and it spits out anki_import_file.tsv. Then you just double click it, check the proper options in Anki so it overwrites what it's supposed to, and there you go.

Sadly there is no way to do this automatically but it really doesn't take that long and I find it is by far the best way to create the most high quality vocab cards.

Real Kana keeps telling me to turn off adblocker if I want to use their site. I don't even have any adblock extensions on any of my browsers yet it keeps telling me that no matter where I open it. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I'm confused by the concept of 'readings' for kanji in words.

Is there a limited number of sounds that an individual kanji in a word can make, such that if I know enough vocabulary with a kanji and then see a word I haven't learned containing said kanji, I'll know that it makes the same sound as one of the previous words I know?

Ah you think you study Japanese? You merely adopted the language. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't see content until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but a compulsion.
>>
>>143109027
everything is finite man

there are just some words that are batshit retarded

until you're literally fluent, there's no point recognizing anything but joyo readings and obvious common ones that didn't make the cut

Pretty much. Like others said there are plenty of batshit ones (for example, basically every animal kanji has special readings) but for most words if you know the onyomi from other words that kanji is in then you will be able to know the reading of new words that kanji is in, or at least make an educated guess.

So I wanna improve my kanji writing ability.

Anyone got a good suggestion for sheets to print off, or hell, even a book I can buy with exercises? Just wanna do the basics/radicals and eventually build my writing ability from there.

There are practice sheets on Tyler Kim dot com under the kana sections, but graph paper should be fine

>>
>>143110838
tablets suck for that kinda stuff though.
>>
>>143110838
Why bother getting a tablet when you can just buy a small whiteboard and a marker for around 10 bucks? Hell, some paper and pencil would be even cheaper and serve the same purpose.
>>
>>143110896
How so? It's the same as using a pen on a piece of paper, and it means you can undo strokes if you fuck them up and clear the page easily

>>143110907

>>143110978

You're still holding a pen shaped object and using it to draw on a flat surface, similar enough for doing something as simple as kanji writing practice

You fucking think that's okay? Don't fucking erase strokes each time you're writing faggot. Just rewrite the whole thing.
>>

Might as well get some paper and a pencil.
You can get thousands of papers for the price of a tablet.

>>
>>143111224
yeah but the point is it's actually less convenient than just using a pen and paper so I don't know why you would recommend it

>>143110584
the only way to build up kanji writing skill is to just write a lot
what I did was an anki deck with two different cards for each kanji, one with kanji on the front, and one with keywords on the front that I would use to remember and write out the kanji

actually this method kind of sucks for production, but it does train your writing hand to be quick, and it embeds stroke order into muscle memory

if you want to be able to remember how words are written from memory then you'll just have to handwrite a lot of japanese using words you know
in modern times there is not really a reason to do this and even natives fuck up easy words like 翻訳 due to being out of practice
>>
