Yandere/Yangire should be renamed to "Batshit insane" because it's a really niche archetype that adds nothing but a little of comedy unless it has a dark theme.

I think it comes down to the fact that they're hard to write consistently and they generally aren't conducive to a long story.
When a writer gets a yandere right they tend to be really memorable characters whether you like the trope or not, but if they fuck it up they tend to be tremendously bad, more so than any of character type

Because they were originally just a cheap way to disqualify best girls from getting the MC by derailing them into antagonists intended to make the winning worst girl suddenly look good in comparison. However, they were then fetishized and developed into a new archetype by people who didn't let that deter them, but since the entire appeal of yandere was its novelty and shock value, it quickly got old.
