I was looking up something and came across this:
http://japaneselevelup.com/difficulty-level-guide-everything-japanese/
It looks mostly like our recommended list, but with more entries for drama and actual novels.
It has some errors. I saw a few manga listed under anime.
I'm not sure if the difficulty of Azumanga Daioh is the same as Mawaru Penguindrum though. That seemed pretentious and hard enough to follow when I watched it subbed.

Just an exaggeration dude the point is just that basically watching any anime raw is "advanced" whereas beginners can read VNs despite the harder vocabulary level.

They probably rated nichijou as easy because you can enjoy it without understanding what they are saying due to the type of humor, but if you actually want to understand everything said it's rather hard.
>>
>>142782522
But anon, all kyoAni anime are easy to understand compared to other anime (Haruhi is probably a different case) though it's true that 1 star is wrong.
>>
>>142782595
No.

Vocab wise it's easy maybe but since everyone yells all the time it makes it a lot harder to pick up what people are saying.
>>
>>142782229
Fix diet and sleep schedule, do some light calisthenics, grab some fruit and a cup of tea/coffee and just sit down and start something. Sit up straight.

If reading a text book is putting you to sleep, try taking notes and put on some nice instrumental music in the background. Buy some highlighters too.

If your VN is boring, take a break and try a different one.

Basically: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXsQAXx_ao0

Even though this is a low level normie meme, I've found it to be pretty useful. The hardest part of doing anything, for me, is starting it.

If you find yourself getting distracted by something, remove it. I always get rid of my bookmarks bar when I want to focus on a web page. I know I will hit my 4chan bookmark and start shitposting the moment I stop focusing.

Try cleaning up your room if it's messy. You don't have to do the whole thing, just pick a part and do it. When you look around, you'll feel a bit better and that might be enough to energize you. Maybe open the blinds, and get some more light into your room.

I know you can do it, anon. Good luck. I know we'll see each other in the afterlife.
>>
>>142782522
>basically watching any anime raw is "advanced" whereas beginners can read VNs despite the harder vocabulary level.
True, and the reason is speed.

When you have all the time in the world to sit and think about each sentence you can understand almost anything.

Keeping up with the language at a spoken pace means you have to comprehend input in real time. Significantly more difficult, even if you don't have to look up any words.
>>

Not really. Either there is an afterlife where we'll get to shoot the shit with all the anons we talked to in life, or there isn't and this is all we have. It really doesn't warrant as much thought as people put into it.

I sometimes lose sight of the fact that there's a person behind these bits of text. Someone that could have been my friend, my closest confidant, or even my lover, if only we had been born closer to each other.

In any case, we only have so much time to learn Japanese and read all of that top quality hentai.

Newfag here... so after reading the guide, this is the order that I should proceed in based on what I have gathered (please correct me if I'm wrong). I've just finished installing the essentials

1. Learn Kana with RealKana or something similar
2. Use Anki to learn the first 2k words (proceed further if you hate looking up words)
3. Go through Tae Kim or similar grammar book
4. Learn some Kanji - going to go through Kanji Radical deck then All in One Kanji
5. Start reading Yotsuba with Yotsuba reading pack
6. Read through random stuff of the reading list

I am not sure what things you should do side-by-side or throughout this whole process. Like if you should always be doing X no matter what, regardless of whether you're reading or learning grammar, etc.
>>
>>142783279
If I could convince myself there's an afterline that would definitely make life more bearable, or death less frightening. I'd be fine as long as I could maintain that belief until I'm dead, at which point it stops mattering whether it's true or not. Really, what's there to lose? Whatever it takes to live a happy life.
>>
>>142783805
Do anki and Tae Kim at the same time, start Yotsuba after you finish Tae Kim or 2K or both, then worry about doing kanji after you've gotten into the swing of things with Yotsuba, also download the Yotsuba reading list or whatever it's called

Can someone point me on who's the subject for this page, 4th panel?

I think figuring the subject is sorta a pain/easy to miss when reading, but lately I've been assuming that ALL dialogues assume the speaker as the subject (actor) unless stated otherwise, but this sentence made me doubt that again.

"A few hours later..."
"After being told all that we didn't even get the chance to introduce ourselves..."
"I got this from the stuff in the refrigerator but..."
"They're obviously serving us some weird medicine in here!"
(the next two sentences, assuming 抜く is to pee)
1 a. "I think I'll take a leak, it looks like she's in pain too..."
1 b. "Looks like she's in pain, (I'll ask her if she's) going to the bathroom" (because of 抜いてこよう, not sure here)

(since this sentence is unfinished, hard to pick from the context)
2. "Do <subject> want to go to the bathroom? It looks like we're not getting out of here for a while..."

I'm guessing he's referring to himself, but the -てこよう is making me doubt that, what's the correct interpretation of this dialogue?
>>

I would recommend learning some kanji alongside vocab+grammar. It has helped me to learn vocab a bit easier because even if you don't remember a word, you can get some meaning from the kanji, which can then help to trigger your memory for the word. It's actually quite easy once you get into the swing of it.

Anywhere I can find Japanese 3DS games that have furigana or are easy to read? I got 新・光神話 but it's not always possible to pause to read the subtitles, and there are a lot of made up compound words so it's not ideal. I don't like VNs/LNs and there isn't that much anime with subtitles available.

>It's still a fucking pisstake.

Then I guess you have your answer. I use both card types for personal reasons but if you aren't really getting anything out of something, you don't have to use it. It isn't like languages are one of those things which require a very specific methodology.
>>
>>142792708
I'm not using them, and the main reason is that there are too many synonyms.
After a while, instead of actually practicing grammar, you will have to memorize which example sentence has which of the 10 varieties of "if...then".
>>
>>142792859
I've never had this problem despite being almost finished the advanced cards. There are a lot of descriptions which sound similar but a lot of that comes to to paying more attention to the sentence and knowing when one concept which sounds similar in English doesn't really fit with the sentence structurally.

No, I was quite serious. The first one is the -te form of 嵌める. It means inserting something, usually a dick.
The second one is 当てる + てみる. 当てる means to hit something. -てみる means trying to do something. Okay, this doesn't really have a sexual nuance, but it means "try to hit" or "try to answer correctly".

That isn't "returning to eternity", it's "never returning".

永久に takes an adverbial usage here, meaning "forever", and 帰らぬ is the literary negative form of 帰る (「帰る」の未然形「かえら」+「ず」の連体形「ぬ」). So an accurate but inelegant translation would be: "He has become a person who will never return."

There are actually some omissions. I mentioned it very late in the last thread: the onyomi for 納(ナッ(納豆)) and 合(カッ(合戦)、ガッ(合唱)) are not represented anywhere. I'm not really sure how those isolated 促音 would even be represented using 英字.

Oh, I'm half asleep, didn't read that one right, sorry! Doesn't change much of the meaning, fortunately.

I assumed the next dialogue ("the answer is NO") was from one of the sisters' question in the previous panel ("why don't we...?").

I'm not seeing how it's from the third person, maybe except by the last line "this is a story about those 3...", but I'm not sure if I was supposed to discern that before that.

I checked that dictionary (the first of my go-to dics, with weeblio), but still didn't help. I'm guessing because I'm not understanding the meaning properly of those sentences.

From what you've said, I'd guess then...

"Will he be able to choose one between those two?"
"Not to say, will he be able to avoid this situation...?" (still can't think of how to fit など in here... I think the meaning is not totally lost in japanese, but I can't think of how to represent it in english; if it's easy then I probably missed the actual meaning again)

"The answer is obviously NO."

Whew, I don't think it's perfect (the translation) but I think at least I got the meaning correctly now, which is what I wasn't sure of, it's making more sense now.

I think I really need to figure out these dialogues (I assumed it was his inner dialogue from the start) faster, among other issues.

Many thanks!

Are you the one who created that autism-bait?

Okay, let's address these one by one:

>As much as イモウト is a reading of 剣

I have no idea what you're even trying to argue here. イモウト is nowhere recognised as a reading for 剣, either as 常用表読み or 表外読み. As scheduled readings, there are only ケン and つるぎ. If we include the 票外読み, that adds コン、and the name readings あきら、つとむ and はや.

イモウト is not a reading of 剣 in any way, shape or form.

>Invalid example. That reading is not a reading of very narrow use.

Outside the word 天然, that reading is virtually unknown. That's pretty fucking narrow.

>Cool story, the Japanese Ministry of Education officially disagrees with your personal opinion.

Either you misunderstand my opinion, or you are ignorant of just what the Ministry actually says.

My point is that ナッ is NOT a rare reading for 納 and is officially scheduled as a 表内読み for the character. Here's the official document:

http://www.mext.go.jp/b_menu/hakusho/nc/k19811001001/k19811001001.html

Note that "ナッ" is explicitly listed. It is the same case with 合. 合点, the only exception in which 合 really is read as ガ is explicitly noted as an exception. Looks like the Ministry agrees with me.

>Outside the word 天然, that reading is virtually unknown. That's pretty fucking narrow.
It's not officially marked as unknown. Are you intending to violate the intentions of the official Joyo documentation?

>Either you misunderstand my opinion, or you are ignorant of just what the Ministry actually says.
You can go read it yourself. They specifically say very narrow use.

Sweet fucking Jesus, you're stupid.

First, we're are talking about what are recognised as readings by the Ministry. イモウト is NOT recognised as one. You lose. Even if I were to accept that assertion, イモウト would NOT be the reading of 剣, but the 熟字訓読み of the entire compound 自剣, so wrong there too.

>Outside the word 天然, that reading is virtually unknown.

>It's not officially marked as unknown.
>Outside the word 天然, that reading is virtually unknown.
>virtually

Again: you're a fucking idiot. Note the qualifier "virtually", you fucking illiterate.

Further, ネン is NOT indented, yet does not occur in ANY common word except for 天然, yet ナッ occurs in 納豆、納得、納所.

然: One use as ネン
納: Three uses as ナッ

But ネン is NOT a special reading, but ナッ is. Okay, pal. Okay, Ministry, since that's demonstrably wrong.

>You're the one that's policing someone else's pet project senpai.

>First, we're are talking about what are recognised as readings by the Ministry.
I said "they're readings that are only official to make it so that specific common words don't have to be written with furigana in joyo-friendly material". Not "they're only there for the lulz lol".

Full-fledged readings is another thing, and to be sure, only the readings that are not indented are full-fledged readings.

>イモウト is NOT recognised as one. You lose. Even
Anon, you might be literally autistic.

>Again: you're a fucking idiot. Note the qualifier "virtually", you fucking illiterate.
If you insist on "virtually" being vital then your point there is literally irrelevant to the conversation.

>Further, ネン is NOT indented, yet does not occur in ANY common word except for 天然, yet ナッ occurs in 納豆、納得、納所.
Commonness is not how the ministry of education decides to define words as having very narrow use. There's no contradiction there at all senpai. They literally say it right there. Indentation = very narrow use. They don't say rare.

>Policing? That's what you call asking about the purpose of that autistic masturbatory material?
Yeah senpai, you're literally exercising your guns and laying down the subjective motherfucking righteousness right here. No butts about it.

You are clinically retarded. There is no point in addressing you further. You change discussion scope without warning, move goalposts, redefine terminology on the fly...

But I'll point out AGAIN how fucking stupid you are:

>Even if I were to accept that assertion, イモウト would NOT be the reading of 剣, but the 熟字訓読み of the entire compound 自剣, so wrong there too.

That's what I wrote. You then contradict me AGAIN without any source and completely ignore the mention of 熟字訓読み. So, in your fantasy land, if イモウト is a reading for 剣, then みじ is a reading for 葉 (紅葉, right, moron?) and ま is a reading for 女(海女). You don't understand the difference between regular, independent readings and compound-only readings.

Because you're fucking stupid and, I think, autistic in the literal sense of the word, not the colloquial shorthand we use around here for regular dumbasses.

>Just putting aside your fractal wrongness about everything else for a moment, would you care to explain just how that chart could possibly be of help as a learning tool?

>Things do not have to justify their existence to you, autist. Fact.

There are some good applications for noting rare readings, simply because they're easier to remember. If you know that ニク is unique to 肉 in the jouyou set, you won't try to pronounce any other character that way. That's actually really useful.

But collecting all the characters that can potentially be read as ショウ seems to have no application beyond being able to point at the gigantic mass of kanji and yell "WTF is this shit?!" Which could be therapeutic, I guess.

A more useful idea might involve mapping relationships between 漢音 and 呉音. There are definitely repeating patterns in them: 壊 and 会 both have カイ and エ, 疫 and 益 both have エキ and ヤク, for example.

This is actually useful because if you can recognise a word as having a Buddhist context, you can usually determine that the 呉音 is the correct one to use.

Similar situation, but my studies have just been meandering all over the place. I can't seem to settle into any particular way of doing things.

>start back by doing core + dojg deck
>do core for about 3 weeks, reaching around 1300 words
>start mixing up certain words and repeatedly failing others which, coupled with how boring i find it, makes me drop it
>barely even used the dojg deck because it just felt like a horrible match with anki
>decide i need to learn kanji because that was the chief reason that certain cards kept fucking me up
>pick up rtk, get 100+ kanji into it, but thinking up mnemonics bores me to tears so i stop
>still gotta learn kanji somehow, and i still need to refresh my knowledge of grammar
>start doing a radical deck and compile a list of all the grammar points in tae kim which are covered by the basic dojg
>finish those a few days ago
>start non-rtk kanji deck where i write a certain amount of characters out then review them a few hours later in anki (which i'm actually quite enjoying - much more than rtk at least)
>also started reading manga

That's where I'm at now. I'm reluctant to go back to Anki for vocab until I've at least gotten through the 常用漢字 though since it will probably just be a repeat of the experience I had with Core which made me want to quit. I think I'm just gonna read and try to take it easy while I get used to the grammar and made my way through this kanji deck.

What is this? I've had a fairly similar history as you, getting bored with RTK, Core, etc. but desperately want to learn how to write.

Did the radical deck actually help? How long did it take to complete?
>>
>>142809644

I picked an extreme, one-use-only example to illustrate. Maybe a better one might be アク, used only in 悪 and 握 in jouyou. So, knowing that, if you were to find yourself looking at a character and unable to remember if it's, say, イク or アク, you could remember that アク is only applicable to 悪 and 握 so if the kanji in question is not one of those, it must therefore be the other. It can function as a rapid, process-of-elimination strategy.
>>
>>142809724
Don't confuse cards and notes. To delete cloze cards open Tools -> Manage note types -> cards and delete cloze tab on top.

>What is this?
This is the deck I'm using:
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/798002504
I changed the design of the cards though (removed mnemonics, moved example words to the bottom). Also, I'm using the "Recall" cards with the meaning on the front so that I have to remember the character and write it out.

>Did the radical deck actually help?
That remains to be seen. I feel like characters visually make more sense to me now, but only time will tell whether that is actually the case. This is the deck I used:
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1044119361

>How long did it take to complete?
Well, before I started it, I spent one day writing out half of the radicals, then another day writing out the other half, simply to expose myself to them all. I then finished the deck over the course of 4 days, although I was still failing cards for a few days after that. Overall, I'd say it took about a week or so before I more or less knew them all, but I still usually fail one or two cards each day (it's only a minor failure in most cases though, or me writing out a radical correctly but not the right one).

が is replaced with の when it's part of a clause/phrase that's being used to describe another part of the sentence.

全く光のない is 全く光がない except using の instead of が makes the native reader feel like the sentence is describing another part of the narration instead of simply making an objective statement. In other words, it's read as 全く光のない[こと・もの] with こと・もの entirely omitted.

That's exactly what it is. が and の used to have a lot of overlap. Today the original overlap basically lives on in two ways: の sometimes being used in relative clauses, and が being used for some possessive fixtures like 我が.

I have a million beefs to pick with linguistics' tendency to reuse latin grammatical categories for other languages. Even using them to describe many features of english is a bad idea (such as the possessive).

Genitive in particular is a horrible can of worms because the latin genitive was extremely flexible so linguists strongarm anything with enough genitival properties into being a genitive form.

の has a lot of very common genitival uses, but the natural learning order makes young natives acquire the nominalization of predicates first.

It's very common for western people who understand linguistics to mistake の for a genitive marker "that has some other, weird uses, like them genitives do!"; this results in totally asinine prediction errors like "What do you do with the absolutive argument of たい-verbs in relative clauses?", and if your grammar is not predictive, that means it doesn't actually describe hte language.
