>im the one in the thread that has been saying English is quite difficult, I understand that even as a native speaker. I learned German for about 2 years and had to stop for reasons. Would I have an """"easier"""" time with Japanese? No genders and more straightforwardness sounds nice.
If you already know one, learning another germanic language already gives you an edge since words have a tendency to be similiar to ones you already know. Seeing it from a "from scratch" point of view, I'd say Japanese is one of the easier languages to learn that I have come across. As I said earlier though, Kanji will always be there, in the way a bit...

>>142730464
>I don't know what you mean by particles as i learnt it through hands on practice and next to no tutelage.
If you can converse and write/read and have not studied particles, I would suggest doing so since it adds so much structure to sentences. And seeing it is one of the first things you learn, it might be good.
>>
>>142728971
Anon Core is based on the Frequency Dictionary of Japanese. It actually has a fair amount of particles and shit like that in it though which is pretty stupid.

Both Core and Anon Core are pointless though. You waste months slogging through them only to realise when you're done that you still can't read a single page of anything without having to look up multiple words (and the words you do know, you would learn quickly anyway just by reading because of how often they're used).

i'm 142730442 →

I did notice how in German basically every third word could be just context clue'd. Right now I'm done with 平仮名 and starting on Katakana. I'm actually not that worried about Kanji being the most daunting task, considering it is vocabulary. I do understand that it is still not fun.

For those comfortable with reading in japanese, what do you think about it, compared to reading in your native language?

I'm at the level where I can read and understand things save some weird complex sentences (with the help of a dictionary for my poor vocab), but the "reading" feels too unnatural to me. I hate to *set* my brain "ok, now I'm going to process kanas" and actually think "oh, this is a verb... in it's -teiru, but there's a -wakenai later so this mess up everything..." etc

Where in english (or my native language) I can read almost skipping words and still make sense of everything.

I'm mostly curious to think when I'll be able to get at this level for japanese, like see an outdoor on the street while driving and read it naturally...
>>
>>142732525
JALUP decks are not worth it... but I like the idea behind them where you have the sentence on the front and the back only defines the one new word/grammar point/whatever. The switch to Japanese definitions/explanations is pretty nice... but definitely not worth the money.

What do you do... just a single word on the front?

I feel like sentence decks plant a seed in your mind and give you a place to anchor the meaning/reading/kanjis of a word for when you see it out in the wild.

What is your beef with sentence cards? Do you think people would just memorize the sentence and glaze over the kanji since they are using the clues of the words around the target word?

So Tae Kim says that べからず is for things one must not do. Looking through my notes, though, the same can be expressed through te-form + は + だめ.
Is there a meaningful difference?
>>
>>142733673
If you're just starting out, I would recommend downloading the JapanesePod101 nihongo dojo lessons and drilling/reading and re-reading the dialogues. As you listen and read the scripts, visualize the situation instead of trying to translate words back to another language that you understand.
You'll git gud fast, I promise, bb. :3

>>
>>142734094
>なれるならなる

>it becomes if it can become?
>>
>>142734038
べからず is generally more formal, and you're not often going to see it outside of written material.

In general, however, there are a lot of ways to say everything, so it's best to not worry just because you see two different things that seem to mean the same thing. Just read more and the difference in usage will become clear.
>>
>>142734094
Things like that I can almost read fast/naturally, it's when kanjis are involved that my brain halts.

>>142734230
I'm guessing:

> なれるなら (なる + える + なら)
If you can become
> なる
Then become
> ということで
Therefore
> やんすな (I'm guessing it's やすんな)
It's easy

Something like "If it was so easy to be, everyone would be" or a similar expression.

It's much easier to mass accrue basic vocab with core10k due to the word order than it is to do the same with words as you come across them in mining. If however you took a bunch of mined words, say reading through an entire volume of manga then taking the words and ordering them via kanji, this would have a similar effect as the core10k (and I think the core2k6k deck) order, making it easier to pick up out of "context".

I say out of context with scare quotes because most of time you quickly forget where most words from mining from from unless you use a short sentence the word came from, of which even then becomes soon forgettable unless the sentence has some very memorable aspects to it.
For real world example, my Core10k deck mature cards are around 95% and my mined deck mature cards are around 87%. I am glad that I didn't bother adding words that were already in Core10k to my mining deck because they are so much easier to pick up as going through that deck. Those wasted "months" were really fucking nothing, looking back. I would have "wasted" more time doing something foolish like dropping Core at 2k words or not taking advantage of Core at all.

got it,

If that anon is still around who was putting together some sort of phonetic map type thing for the kanji in Kanji Damage, I threw together something that you may be able to use some of the data from:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OaNWAM_U_27uSQUK2oj6OA0OKzDVWyzWSuaFtzzX_Ig/edit?usp=sharing

It is only On readings at the moment as adding Kun readings would require dynamically altering the format for the larger range of kana used compared to the simple and limited On readings.
The data sourced used official 常用漢字 readings.
For some semi-pointless trivial, here is the top ten list of On readings and the number of kanji which officially use them as valid readings:
67 コウ
67 ショウ
50 シ
45 カン
41 トウ
39 キ
39 ソウ
35 セイ
34 カ
32 ケイ

Also, there are 286 arrangements of official Chinese readings for these kanji. Modern Mandarin Chinese has 413 "syllables", this is without taking into tones, meaning the number of possible sounds in "Chinese" can run upwards of around 2000. Mandarin Chinese actually lost a large amount of sounds commonly used in the language compared to older Chinese dialects and Chinese languages like Cantonese jibberjabber, Tibetan wailing, etc. which have a wider array of sounds as they are closer to the older commonly spoken dialects.
It's pretty impressive for various reasons just how Japanese came to adapt these "Chinese" readings into their language. Aside from geography they are so far apart linguistically.

It's a failure of kana. Here's the rundown.

Japanese has this syllable grid. It also has some diphthongs that glide away from the y sound to another vowel. These diphthongs are written with two characters instead of one, and the first character is an Ci character, and the second character is a small yV character.

However, some of japanese's Ci characters have irregular sounds. You have ta, te, and then chi. You have sa, se, and then shi. Due to a hilarious coincidence of history, these irregular Ci syllables don't create diphthongs when written in the diphthong format. They create a new row of consonants instead.

Easier to do 50 new cards a day with. If you get a less useful kanji 「威」 wrong, but your answer was still kind of close. It's not a big deal to just hit hard if the card is still very young (>20 days).

It also orders it so if kanji have the same particles and 音読み as each other, they are close to each other. 制 & 製

Any normal moege. Even ones with EPIC TWISTS are fine as long as they start out simple and don't turn into pretentious schlock.

"I want to start reading harder material":
Steampunk, Ley Line, etc. Pick a normal story game that isn't targeted at a specific demographic. If you pick one that's meant for a specific demographic it's probably going to have a lot of writing problems.

"Just fuck my shit up":
Genji. Get crackin'.

It's Iwaihime. Came out this spring, and I don't think anyone's translating it so far, which is actualyl kind of nice because it means that I don't feel like I'm wasting my time by reading through it at a snails pace. It's closer in tone to Higanbana than Higurashi or Umineko, which is probably why it's similarly obscure, but if you're into social commentary told through metaphores in the form of mildly spooky ghost stories it might be your thing.

How important you guys say is it to do the exercises if I'm using Genki for grammar? You're absolutely right, but it still -feels- like a waste of time to a lot of people. It's the same reason someone might have for watching TV while eating breakfast: 'Why should I focus on eating, when I could be watching a bad sitcom at the same time'. It's completely mental, but the unrest it fills you with when you feel like you're not filling up your time with as much as possible can get pretty overwhelming.

People in this thread complain daily that they did Tae Kim and don't remember most of the conjugation rules by the time they finish the guide. That's the advantage of Genki: meaningful practice.
You can type them out if you want, but it could help to get a textbook or piece of paper and just write them down.

Is there a quick reference for verb conjugations? Like the little charts Genki has, but all in one place.

>open a manga on the left side of your screen

>consult DoJG for unknown grammar
Of course you can't read anything if you don't look things up when you don't understand them, and you never will be able to read anything if you keep up that approach either.

This is why the Core decks are bad. They're a crutch that lets people stick to beginner shit for ages and gives them the delusion that when they're finally finished several months down the line that they'll be able to read things easily and hardly ever have to look anything up. Then when the beginner discovers that they indeed do have to look things up very often even after finishing their Core deck, they become disheartened and want to quit, often blaming themselves instead of the method.

I have 蒸気 somewhere up in the pile but I can just delete 水蒸気 when I encounter it later and don't need it.
You can hardly derive meaning from 位置エネルギー unless you see it multiple times so there's no reason not to mine it just because it's easy. By the time I see it in Anki I'll probably have forgotten it but if I don't I can always click easy or delete it.

Anyone else here read 百舌谷さん逆上する? I was reading through the first volume a bit earlier today and get wondering that the mangaka may have wanted to be a light novel author as a lot of pages have walls of texts awkwardly taking up far too much of the page real estate. Out of interest I looked to see if it was translated and like the first three volumes have been, over the course of two years or something, by the same group. Judging by reading a few pages here and there of the scanlated work it seems as though the translator was struggling in places where the text became denser and I guess they just gave up.

The manga has all the right stereotypes to be a successful light novel series about an over the top ツンデレ blonde girl schoolgirl.

I can kinda see that logic, a kid could believe someone can only know one language. The short version is this:

寝かす belong to a literary verb conjugation class called 下二段 most members of which transformed into modern 下一段 verbs (in other words, they became verbs like 受ける、食べる).

A number of speakers and writers mistook it for a 五段/四段 verb like 書く or 話す and tried to conjugate it as such, so both forms remain and can still be seen.

If you still have no idea what I'm talking about, go read up on the nine verbs classes of literary Japanese and it should become clear.

Not him, but the technical issue is the semantics of the word "case". Japanese "case" particles are not always obligatory, which means that they lose a lot of the properties that other languages' case systems have. And their meaning is also enslaved to the verb, so they lose a lot of properties again. Most languages have one or two exceptions that work like that, but in japanese, it's almost constant. The only thing I can definitely call a case particle in japanese is を. The others are all general-use particles that happen to be used for case a lot.

Fuck, why did I never think of this? I've been improvising so far by turning regular writing paper on its side so that the rows become columns, but it's still not ideal because I end up making the more complicated characters too long. I can't believe it didn't occur to me to try graph paper instead.

I should also mention that there is a flaw in the charts' design. The character 納 has the reading ナッ as in 納豆, and 合 has both ガッ as in 合唱 and カッ as in 合戦 but those are not represented anywhere in the chart.

Note that it's always ナッ and never ナツ, always ガッ or カッ and never ガツ or カツ. I still fail to see the utility of this thing, but if you want it to be complete, you'll need to fit those in somewhere.

If you think it will be cheaper, you could use the purpose-made practice sheets from that site the other anon mentioned:
http://happylilac.net/sy-ntka.html

I'm pretty sure graph paper would work out cheaper than plain A4+printer ink though (esp. if you don't already own a printer), and it looks to be exactly the same thing. The only difference is that the practice sheets on that site have a slight gap between the grids, and because of the page margins taking up a lot of space there are less grids per page.

Alright DJT, there needs to be something settled, here and now, for all you newbies studying.

It's IMPOSSIBLE to learn to speak Japanese well. It's just not gonna happen. At best you can speak as a recognizable foreigner making frequent mistakes. That's the best case. So throw out any hopes of learning to fluently speak, or heck even keep up with Japanese speakers in the street. Just focus on learning kanji and you'll have a chance of being able to read. Reading is possible thanks to kanji. Focus all your hopes on it and just give up trying to speak as an adult in Japan. It just won't happen.
