If you can read this, you understand Japanese.

Why
>>
>>142477693
Can't imagine core is the most efficient way, just the most common one

The fact that it throws all those 下 words at you at once is just one of the ways that it's definitely not the most efficient
>>
>>142476316
If you can read this you might be able to pass N3

I'd rather see all of them at once than getting confused by them later. They're extremely common so it isn't that hard to get down.

Just curious what do you think is more efficient?
>>
>>142477963
I actually got it from my Genki II pack. I just wanted beginners to feel good.
>>
>>142478017
Not that guy but, personally I only memorized their readings based on the okurigana but I'm not sure I really know the meanings of all the individual 上/下 words, probably because it did throw them all at once at me.

>>
>>142478017
It's seeing them all at once that causes confusion, seeing them separately gives you a much easier time differentiating the meanings

And I'm not sure of any alternatives, I just assume core can't possible be "the most efficient", it's a fine option for sure, but it could be done better
>>
>>142478193
There might be some things that need fixing up like that, but I really doubt there's some other method that is as fast. You can probably learn the words that didn't stick later by reading anyways.

Quick question. What does this mean? I've never seen it in text and I don't know how to type it to google it.
>>
>>142478193
In the core before 2K / 6k all of those words were separated apart.

下がった was supposed to be the 1003rd word.
下ろす the 1405
下げる 919

I think they just combined them all so it could be convenient matching the kanji.

You don't even need to know stroke order to draw shit on google translate, hell you don't even need to draw most of the strokes for it to get it, it's obviously the more casual choice

I only use radical search because I pretty much always have jisho open so it's just easier, not that I ever have to use it anyway because I can pretty much always think of at least one word that has the kanji I'm looking for in

No shit reading LNs is normal, people wouldn't even know what it is just by seeing the letters and if it's in Japanese it'd be a great conversation starter.
But anon, don't make it obvious that you're reading manga when outside. Maybe anime has distorted your view of reality, but that's not the reputation you want in a work environment.

Remember this isn't about autistically hiding your interests out of fear of a social stigma you lack the confidence for dealing with or something, this is about actually going out there and letting people know of it.

By what rationale is the Core 2k/6k optimized jap vocab deck ordered? Most used or useful words?

Also, why is it core 2k/6k if there is 6000 words? Why 2k?

I'm lazy, it's a lot easier to grind anki than read and understand grammatical literature. I think I'll tone back my new words per day so I can free up some time to wrap up TK. I want to get over that hurdle so I can start reading and perhaps make studying fun and more rewarding than flashcards.
>>
>>142489609
Any time is a good time to start. Vocabulary doesn't really matter when you read anyway since you can just look words up in a dictionary, and nothing in yotsuba should be hard grammar wise. In fact it might even be a waste of time since there's little it can teach you that you won't pick up from listening to cartoons, other than sharpen your reading speed a little. It's a nice manga though.

I ended up dropping it and starting an LN instead since it exposes me to more complex sentences, though that's because I had put off doing any actual reading for half a year before then and yotsuba was below my level.

Also it doesn't seem right that you have 1500 cards while only being "most" of the way through Tae Kim. That should really have been something you finished probably before you even started anki.

Adjectives that aren't regularly conjugatable natively Japanese kunyomi words that end in things like-i/-shii, but rather unconjugatable onyomi compounds that need "na" as an auxiliary particle suffix to make their adjective status clear when put before words. Came across a proverb in the A Dictionary of Advanced Japanese Grammar that sounds so much better than the Chinese version of the time.
Chinese:
心不在焉、視而不見、聴而不聞、食而不知其味。
Japanese:
心焉に在らざれば、視れども見えず、聴けども聞こえず、食らえども其の味を知らず。
I know Chinese history has a lot of poetry and the like, of which a lot of is famous for being referenced in Japanese verse, but fuck me the Chinese poetry these older Japanese poets regarded as valuable sound like complete shit compared to the Japanese verse which was inspired from it. Even Chinese proverbs sound better as a monged English translation than they do in the original language.

Apparently ど was used in a similar way in older Japanese to how ば is used in modern Japanese, which is kind of neat. Are there any anons here with experience with 古典? I'm still a long way away but various phrases and idioms with roots in classical Japanese pop up here and there in manga and it sounds kind of neat.

Let me tell you my perspective.
There's no way around reading to gain comprehension. Think about it, there is no avoiding reading. You will get a feel for the language this way.

That being said you MUST be able to justify your translation using grammar rules. If you dont then you fall victim to just plain guessing. Unless the sentence is "trivial" based on how you feel and your level, make sure you can justify what you just read with grammar rules. Also read things with translations and figure out how it corresponds to the translation.

>>142494811
>I feel at 3,000 words into Anki, I should know enough to have a higher score than I did.
It was it is, anon. Though it may pay to keep in mind that 3,000 words does go very far unless they are 3,000 words specifically used in the given texts you are reading. For example, there are approximately 274 words used in the volumes of 苺ましまろ which are not used in Core10k and about 300 words used in あずまんが大王 which are not found in Core10k.
That and being familiar with the general meaning of a collection of words is not the same as being familiar with how they are actually used in different contexts. It helps make reading easier but it still takes a large amount of expose to comprehensive material before it starts to make sense in terms of nuance and connotation. In writing, maybe even more so in Japanese, there is an implicit understanding between the writer and reader not just of what is written but what is not written instead of what is expected and what is omitted.

>I feel embarrassed.
Don't be embarrassed nigger, we all start out shitting ourselves for a while before getting used to the process of passing bowel movements without ending up looking like the aftermath of a wedding reception. Language comprehension is no different as most of it boils down to an intimate familiarity of how people generally express things. It takes a lot of time and a lot of crawling through shit. Have a smug Lain for your worries.

what disinformation

comprehending a complex sentence is possible with all the tools given to you by simple grammar guides, but even so that does not mean you will be able to do it if all you studied beforehand was imabi

I don't know if I'd say "translation," since translating every sentence you read from J→E in your head seems like a bad habit.
It's more like sticking to just what is said in the sentence, reverse engineering rather than trying to fill in gaps. Basically making sure particles actually mean something to you rather than being a sign to fish out a random English conjunction.

Hanahira is something recommended to beginners who don't actually know what they want to read, doesn't mean you have to follow it 100% of the time. News sites, radio, music and podcasts are also legitimate and effective methods for him to build up his vocabulary through consuming media about stuff he's interested in. You don't lose anything by attempting something above your level. If you give up on the first page, you gain something by getting an idea of how difficult the text is. Hey guys, I've found a pretty good way to watch TV from Japan.

First step, go to http://mokodojo.net/, and ideally open some kind of TV guide in another window.

Find the channel you want, click it, and add this shit to the end of the url: &showList=1&bufferTime=10&setLanguage=en_US

This enables the EPG so you can watch shit from the last 4 days as long as you know what time it was on, and gives you a decent enough buffer period that the stream won't stutter like a mad cunt, which is what it does for me without a buffer. You'll also want to click the little wrench and change the settings to this to get a proper aspect ratio.

If you just want to watch live, then remove the &showList=1 part. Feel free to reduce/increase the buffer time depending on your connection.
>>
>>142502685
Bear in mind the times are an hour off because of the time difference between China and Japan, so if the show you want to watch starts at 6, watch at 5.

Kanji if it's an either/or situation. You're gonna need vocab for that grammar and you can write the vocab in kanji. So unless you want to completely ignore kanji (which is an objectively bad idea) you might as well start doing both.

Grammar is the core of the language, not vocab. Learning kanji and vocab is great but if it's an either/or situation grammar is the way to go.
There's no significant vocab prerequisite to learning grammar, hovering over tae kim's examples for definitions is enough to get you through his guide and it is very important to get through at least that to learn how simple things like particles and verbs work if you want to learn the language.

Ya I want to be able to read kanji so I'll be doing both. The anki 2k/6k vocab decks are those kanji? Do I learn vocab to hiragana/katakan too?

Okay so learning grammar first would be the most important first. I'll probably start off with grammar and have a bit of vocab each day then.

Yeah, the core2k/6k deck is in kanji. Kanji make up words in this language, there's no way around them. The pronunciations are in hiragana on the back of each card by default, also including sound.

I do actually. I can only get internet by using a cell phone. I've had caps ranging from 2-40 GB, and my lowest speed was 7kb/s. It would take over 4 hours to download a single episode of re-encoded 480p anime. If you don't already know about it, I recommend soulreaperzone for low file-size anime episodes, and jdownloader to download them so that if you lose your connection you can just automatically continue downloading when it comes back. Make sure to use a good adblocker to decrease load times and bandwidth consumption.

>嬢ちゃんも困ってるようだし、ここはひとつ、この富士見平次の顔に免じて、許してやってぇ――」

Am I stupid if I can't piece something like this together even though I'm almost done with Tae Kim? Grammar just doesn't seem to go into my brain. Can someone help me break this down and get me to understand it? Context: Girl bumped into a stand and stuff fell to the ground, nearby police officer comes over and says this.

>嬢ちゃんも困ってるようだし
Young Miss already/too? came into trouble

>ここはひとつ
This one thing/time?

>この富士見平次の顔に免じて、許してやってぇ
富士見平 is the name here of the officer, I think.
After that I lose track. Something akin to turning a blind eye to something perhaps?

Fuck, it feels like I will never get grammar.
>>
>>142505437
>even though I'm almost done with Tae Kim?

Tae Kim is only the beginning of grammar m8. In fact he gives shitty explanations for a lot of things. Just as an example his sections on てくる and ていく are.
>>
>>142505608
But isn't that beginner grammar? That's the entire point.
>>
>>142505437
You shouldn't listen to another beginner like me, but without knowing the context I'd say it's something like "Since the young girl was so troubled, just this one time, the next face the officer made seemed to imply tolerance"
Shitty translation but you probably get where I'm coming from. Is the officer talking to/looking at the young girl or does he show tolerance because he sees the one he's talking to/looking at is with a young, troubled girl? Idk
>>
>>142505622
Yeah, I'm just saying, finishing Tae Kim isn't supposed to make you a master of grammar so you don't have to feel you are stupid.
>>
>>142505622
Fully understanding grammar is an incredibly long process that requires an ungodly amount of reading, you'll be getting confused a lot at your level, so don't get too demotivated about it

Today is the day where am not sure whether I should continue or not.
From what I've seen I'll have to review anki for a few years if not forever in order to not forget the kanji.
Holy fuck that is a lot of time you'll be using just for that.
Between my fulltime job, cleaning, cooking and learning Japanese, there is barely any time left for having fun like reading manga watching anime or playing Japanese games.

I mean fuck, I cant even keep up with the translated stuff, cause I'm busy learning or doing chores.
I want to visit Japan again sometime, but you dont need japanese for that.
Also I'll probably never work in Japan.

I think I can't learn Japanese.

Autists are deathly afraid of anything remotely related to spontaneous. human experiences, which is why they flock to generals that allow them to mindlessly repost the same shit day in day out for years on end.

Chances are for every obnoxious sperg complaining about "blogging", there are a few anons who appreciate the shared insights and use it to reflect on their own experiences. It's just easier to left it unsaid than incur the wrath of the hivemind.

Yotstuba isn't perfect, but the combination of sparse, simple (in subject matter) language, the availability of the reading pack, and maybe most importantly: being generally well-liked makes it a good recommendation for beginners. There's Hanahira as well, for example, which certainly has simple language and an analogue to the reading pack in text hookers, but crucially fails on the last point for many people. There's little value in recommending something that people will just end up dropping.

The rise of narcissistic, autistic snowflake manchildren who flooded into /a/ during the 2007 and 2008 period irredeemably fucked over /a/ and replaced jocularity and a general understanding of what it is like to be an anon with something that is closer to tumblr and their little hivemind hugbox communities that only accept an extremely limited scope of reality.
