Unfortunately, no, it is not.

The premise is that the JSDF stomps all over some fantasy Romans/Medieval Europens up. That happens in the first two episodes, and from there on it is mostly unwacky harem hijinks, oversimplified politics, and Nanking denial all the way to the end.

Even what little military action there is in it is poorly scenified, with bad animation, not enough tactics or zoomed out views of the battlefield, or anything that may truly make the thing interesting.

The manga is not that much better, either.

If only it had been a Japanese Generation Kill...

Sure, it was enjoyable. The empire stuff in particular gets interesting as the people who realize just how fucked it is try to turn things around and overcome delusional idiots. Could have used more operating, but I enjoyed what was there. Just go in expecting Gate to be Gate - some soldiers, some fantasy, some politics - and not anything other than Gate.

The only one that wants his dick is Rory, and that's mostly because he's interesting and she's about to become a sexless god. Leilei is so clueless she thinks their married after sleeping in the same for for 3 nights, 2 with a bunch of other people. Yao is doing the whole "honor binds me to you" thing. Pina only wants him for political expedience. Tuka calls him daddy. And that's basically what he is; he's the Team Dad, and they all act like surrogate sisters.

As for women who can't be called part of the harem, most meet him once and never mention him again in a personal way. Not the Rose Nights, not the maids, etc. The female members of his recon team are actively or passively disgusted by his otaku status. Risa loves him, but then she's his ex wife, and resigned to his never loving her back.
