How do you guys handle new cards in anki?
I have them all at the end of the reviews, and press "easy" on all new cards twice to push them instantly to 4 days interval.

Reminder to press good on your failed reviews. It'll make your progress through the deck more efficient.

Yeah, those are all default keyboard shortcuts. As far as I know (old version) you can't change them or add additional shortcut keys to those functions.

I use autohotkey to mirror those shortcuts to my mouse. So most of the time I'm just using the scroll wheel on the mouse (down for space bar (show answer/good), up for 1 (again) and clicking it for R (repeat audio)).

I was skimming through some old folders and came across this image which I saved from 99chan in 2011. I had totally forgotten about it and never actually got round to using it, but to my surprise it contains all the resources which are typically recommended in these threads.

It lists a bunch of other resources too that I've never seen mentioned here though. Has anyone here used them? Are they any good?

ふ is ふ , which is something between fu and hu. Neither of those sounds actually exists in japanese.

>>
>>142201566
I can't read romaji
>>
>>142201566
yes as long as you pronounce the "u" in "hu" correctly so that it influences the h

in english, the h has undefined location. notice how "hah" and "he" put more turbulence in different parts of the mouth

the japanese "u" is pronounced closer to the center of the mouth than the english "u", both the tongue part and the lips part

this makes it push the "h" in "hu" into a location that is close to, but not identical to, the english "f" sound

loanwords with "fa" and "fi" sequences can be pronounced with h, though it is increasingly considered incorrect to do so. meanwhile, "hu"/"fu" merely has to be between "h" and "f".
>>
>>142201642
You should do Heisig's RTR (remembering the romanji)

Worth bearing in mind that chart is about old people.

And modern spelling reform mostly swapped づ for ず and ぢ for じ (and the exceptions were because of just logical spelling relationship to つ and ち), so it doesn't even make sense to use standard spelling as though the difference were preserved there.

People stop frequenting this general once they can read most of the things they want to read. At that point /djt/ simply doesn't have anything to offer you that you couldn't get on other more fitting communities, like Japanaese media recommendations and what not.

While I don't know about fluent I do think a lot of people reached a rather solid level in Japanese thanks to /djt/.

Basically everything there (with the exception of the Kodansha books) has been talked about here at some point. I know I myself am a big fan of JTMW. Overall that's a pretty damn good image, especially for the time - I don't think there's much reason to have a physical kanji dictionary anymore, and textbook-style learning clashes with the DJT philosophy, but otherwise it's got some good info.

One such piece of info being the mentioning of Kenkyusha. If an anon is reading this and doesn't have it, pls go download it and install it for Rikaisama, it covers fewer terms but usually has better definitions than EDICT. You can just switch back and forth between them by pressing P.

I don't know what I'm talking about either but the で probably just implies the one who released the picture is from/of the men fighting the Syrian government. Or Maybe it means the video was released by "the mean fighting the Syrian government", so them as a whole being the subject.

And I think it's not a video of Yasua, but by/from Yasuda. Then the last line seems more like "He entrusted the release of the picture to other men"

But yeah I'm as shit as you, let's get along well senpai

It's not the particle で, it's the copula

安田さんという人のビデオ can mean either a video of yasuda or a video made by yasuda, that info is something you need context for

頼む means to entrust, to ask, to rely on someone, etc.
here it is in passive form so it means he was being asked by other men for the photos

As a last resort, I tried reinstalling Rikaisama and for some reason that fixed it, although now if I set the extensions.rikaisama.epwingusewine string's value to "false" it stops working again (this time I get no error message at all though, absolutely nothing happens if I try to activate EPWING with extensions.rikaisama.epwingusewine set to "false").

Japanese grammar is the easiest in the world. Korean sounds like shit (reason why k-pop is unbearable) and chinese looks like shit (all ideograms from start to end!).

Thing with english is it's more mix 'n match, you have like 4 forms of the actual verbs (play, plays, played, playing, and I think that's it) and the rest is done with auxiliary things like did, have, will, etc.
Spanish barely has any of the auxiliary things and instead has a fucking million forms for each verb, and add to that irregular verbs which you have to memorize.
Japanese conjugates in a similar way to spanish, but there's only a couple conjugations for each verb (as opposed to Spanish) and there's only like 12 irregular verbs.

Anyway, Im a highschooler. I still love doing my hobbies. I just hope I dont fuck everything up when i'm in college, and miss out being with a qt otaku girl.

I asked a girl out in my grade early this year. We almost did, I would just have to meet up with her in school again to plan it. So I didn't stood her up. But I didn't do it Even though she watched anime, I didn't actually like her. I wanted to be with an art girl, someone I like.

So I asked her out, got a huge rush of happy chemicals, but then I blew it off. Just so I can do my neet hobbies, which I love. But now all im doing is hugging my pillow in my bed, thinking about being with a girl.

Hanahira is a terrible VN but the most commonly recommended one for beginners because of its simple sentence structure and easy kanji.

So you just need to hover over it to get a translation. Don't expect to read a VN without having to lookup a new kanji every 5 sentences any time soon. If you had to copy paste each one individually you'd never get anywhere.

It's not about being faster than self study, it's about being stupidly slow compared to self study. You can learn Hiragana and Katakana on realkana.com within 5 hours if you try hard and basic grammar within another 10 hours with Tae Kim's guide if you try hard.

>>
>>142211779
>it's about being stupidly slow compared to self study
90% of my Japanese course was self study. You just go in there so the teacher makes sure you're on the right track + give written / oral exams, and then cram with notecards and audiobooks when you get home. It's still self study, just structured. And structure is what a lot of people need.
>>
>>142212000
You know that's not what self study means, and you undeniably learned slower doing college classes than if you had actually done self study for a year instead.

>>142211474

>>
>>142212108
>and you undeniably learned slower doing college classes than if you had actually done self study for a year instead.
Definitely not true. There's no way I would have stayed up for hours every night crammed over thousands of notecards in anticipation for the next test, or done the 30+ pages of homework due every week. No fucking way I would have done that by myself.

Maybe some people have that kind of self discipline, but definitely not me.
>>
>>142212000

Maybe 500 Japanese words, sentence structure, handwriting, speaking 1 on 1 with Japanese people (interns and the like) and guests and oral exams. I wish I had scans of the tests, they were no joke. I'd be interested in seeing how you anons would have done.

>>142212251
We started moving on to Kanji towards the middle of the second semester. Reminder that we didn't just learn the kanji, we learned all the variants too. And thinking back, it was more like 80 Kanji, all in the span of about a month. A single kanji typically has 10+ different applications.
>>
>>142212314
That's an absolute joke.

We weren't solely focused on Kanji, that was an aside in addition to the spoken / listening parts and grammar.

>speaking 1 on 1 with Japanese people
Yeah the speaking part was a huge part of it. Being in front of real people speaking and listening is a must for learning a new language. How you anons get this experience is beyond me, unless you take trips to Japan.
>>
>>142212497
This, 80 kanji was something like 300 different readings and associated words.

I was way off on my estimate, it was a lot more than 500 words we learned. At least a few thousand.
>>

>Yeah the speaking part was a huge part of it. Being in front of real people speaking and listening is a must for learning a new language. How you anons get this experience is beyond me, unless you take trips to Japan.
I'm only learning this language for visual novels and manga.
>>
>>142212516
>Being in front of real people speaking and listening is a must for learning a new language
Only if you want to have conversations with people, which I'm going to make the wild guess that not too many people here are interested in. You can learn how to understand a language just fine from input only, and output can come after.

You don't understand. 3 kanji a day is a joke, even if you have a fucking packed day where you spend 10 hours going over the differences between はand が. You've learned close to nothing.

>Being in front of real people speaking and listening is a must for learning a new language
It clearly worked out so well given you're below N5 tier after a year.

Don't really agree with this at all. If you want to just be able to read VN or whatever, sure. But if you want to become fluent in a language you really have to spend time talking to people who speak it, which the course was able to offer for us.
>>
>>142212649
After remembering all the readings of Kanji, it was a hell of a lot more than 500 in total words. How the fuck should I know how many in total it was? We learned a lot of words, many per day.
>>
>>142212677
Regardless, it seems like you at least have a good enough base to start reading, so pick up a manga or LN/VN after you're done shitposting. Start a mining deck on Anki, too.
>>
>>142212516
>Being in front of real people speaking and listening is a must for learning a new language.
There are endless interviews, radio shows, and various other programs that offer off-the-cuff, casual speech in any kind of context you can imagine.
As for speaking, the vast majority of work perfecting pronunciation and sounding natural will come from listening, not from being critiqued by a teacher.
There's nothing magical about talking to someone face to face unless you have social anxiety. It's certainly useful, but not indispensable for achieving functional proficiency in a language.
>>
Wanted to get some opinions on this. How valuable is Core if you're already good enough to read?

I stopped doing Core after like 5000 words, the reps were just too shitty. I still use Anki, but only for a kanji deck and the DOJG deck.

But I read in some other thread (on /jp/, I think) some guy talking about how he learned 30000 words from Anki decks and how essential it was for his advancement.

What do you guys think? Is death by anki worth the trouble?
>>
>>142211474
That guy has shit taste, if you like cute yuri girls Hanahira is great
>>
>>142212807
If you're good enough to read, mine. Anki is the best route to long-term retention.
>>
>>142212807
Start a mining deck and keep the daily new cards low so you don't have to worry about a high amount of reps.
>>
>>142212795
To be honest, you still absorb shit far better if you're doing the talking yourself, especially if they're long term acquaintances, in which case you'll naturally tune yourself to use similar patterns and mannerisms, even eventually acquiring some of the accent.
It doesn't work anywhere near as well if you're just a passive observer.
>>
>>142212677
I agree with anon, though. You can get better at speaking later, after your comprehension skills are good enough. It's not like training your native language speaking skills is not a thing.
>>
>>142212677
Fluent means you can express yourself easily and articulately in the language, so yes, you do need to talk to others to become fluent.
I don't assume you have an immediate goal of fluency in mind when you refer to learning a language, though. Learning a language is a process and input is infinitely more valuable than output in that process. You could read books for a year before talking, and by then you would know enough to be able to properly convey something in Japanese to a native if you needed to.

I decided to check out the "Making Sense of Japanese - What The Textbooks Don't Tell You" book from this image since I noticed it was in the CoR. Turns out it actually has a really good explanation of は vs. が in it.

Recommend checking it out if you're struggling with that. Haven't had chance to look through the rest of it yet, but I might do so later. It's not a big book, all in all (it covers a lot less than the DoJG series), but it seems like it has some good explanations for some of the trickier, more confusing aspects of the language.

So what methods do you guys use to memorize kanji readings?

I tried to learn some readings of the Kanji that would appear in my Kanji deck in Anki (I would just try to memorize the onyomi of those with a million kunyomi), but I eventually realized that learning readings through the core 2k/6k vocab deck worked out a lot better for me. But I'm curious to see what other methods people use for readings.

I was starting with Hiragana a few months back but got heavily sidetracked before I could tackle katakana. Now the old proverb of 'use it or lose it' has hit me hard and I forgot most hiragana. I can easily recover but what are some super simple reading resources for them so I can keep them fresh in my head?
>>
>>142215657
To put it bluntly, that is a bad habit, yes.
Not knowing kanji individually has no upsides.
You'll have to check a dictionary every time you run into yojijukugo, and you'll be completely stuck on the meanings of constructed words (and their readings if they're simple and without furigana).

>>142201019
This is covered in the Intermediate section of the DoJG deck for anki. Everytime I see posts like that it makes me feel a little bad for the anons who so desperately claim that using anki for grammar is a waste of time.
>>
>>142215988
No, don't suspend them. The only cards you should suspend are leeches, and if they are leeches anki will automatically suspend them at the appropriate time (assuming you are using default settings).
>>
>>142216086
You sure? I watch my anime subbed so it's not like I'm seeing the actual symbols. I can remember what all the pronunciations are just fine they're easy enough, just not the symbols.

Just grind kana in realkana then start doing Core, you'll have to remember it out of necessity, if you don't you look the kana up, and so and so until they are cemented in your brain.

And like that guy said, if you have exposure you shouldn't forget it. I learned kana months before I actually decided I wanted to start studying.

>>142215988
Fuck those words so much, I have some of the economy words leeched and at this rate the government ones will be leeches too.

>>
>>142217728

There are just no actual rules about what reading is applicable in any given situation; there are always many exceptions. That is not to say that simply because there exist exceptions to a pattern that to learn the pattern is useless. Guidelines can serve you well about 90% of the time.

I know my kanji better than the locals and I still make mistakes with unfamiliar compounds: apply 連濁 when there is none, use a 漢音 instead of a 呉音 in a Buddhist word, fail to recognise an 熟字訓読み usage like 鳳梨 (not ほうり, but パイナップル)... Even educated Japanese can't determine with certainty if 誘う is to be read as さそう or いざなう.

L-R , in a nutshell, is "listen to L2 while reading L1" where L2=language you want to learn and L1=a language you are fluent in. Essentially, you get a Japanese audiobook of whatever book, and read the english book alongside it. Any "parallel text" reader with audio can also be used for this.

(If you're going to say "isn't that like watching subbed anime?", you're right, but she insists that subbed anime is not effective primarily because there's not enough volume of text.)

I'm sure there's some merit to the method, but, unfortunately, shimotteiku (also known as Ada or something) is a fucking autist.

when someone asks for details on how to make it work for them, she usually attacks that person, calling them stupid or close-minded.

when pressed for proof about her many claims, she says it's the technique of some 85-year-old polish polyglot who has mastered 36 languages to native fluency, but whose name will be revealed only to those who she deems worthy (i.e., nobody).

I have never seen any guidelines in any of the materials I used to use, so it's possible that no one ever made an earnest attempt at creating them. If that's true, I think I could make a respectable attempt at systematising my experience into some clearly expressible, ordered rules.

Although, outside of advice like:

"If it looks like a Buddhist term, use a 呉音 (e.g.; 経: きょう instead of the usual けい, 益: やく instead of えき)", the most useful bit of advice is still:

"If you can identify okurigana, use a kun'yomi. If not, use an on'yomi".

According to MAL, I've watched over 60 days worth of anime, and the only real advantage I got from it was having a few "ahhh, so that's what that means" moments when reading through Tae Kim. Basically, I had picked up what various bits of grammar sounded like but had no idea what they actually meant. I had also accumulated a small vocabulary. I was nowhere close to even intermediate level though, let alone fluency, as a result.

Gives me serious doubts about the effectiveness of that person's method. Maybe it's better if you're actively trying to learn the language though, rather than just passively listening to it like I was. I don't see how you could hope to learn anything that way without at least having read a basic grammar guide though.

In Anki desktop: select a deck then press Shift+S. This brings up the statistics graph (alternatively press the button to the right of "Browse", to the direct left of the sync button) where you can see this information. I think an exception are the people who really think it's effective.

How I see it, yes, you will get used to common phrases, but even them you start to understand only after learning the meaning elsewhere. It'll be an "aha moment" where you remember you had heard the thing often but only now truly understood it. After reading a text book.

All true, and I would not consider myself an expert, but rather a competent amateur.

Of course, there is simply no way to determine with any real confidence whether or not a given sentence in kobun, constructed by a modern speaker, would reasonably be thought "natural" by a person of some ancient era, simply because there does not exist a single person who can make that call -- someone who actually lived during that era and somehow continues to draw breath even now.

An extreme example of this would be Classical Chinese. While the vocabulary and grammar are fairly well-understood, no one, not the most 通暁 motherfucker out there, could possibly even make good guesses about how it would have been vocalised by Mencius.

I got into it largely because I believed it would greatly enhance my studies of modern Japanese. I had been encountering too many seemingly-illogical exceptions for my comfort, so I thought I'd get a good grounding in formal/Classical grammar and see if that helped.

It did, a lot. If you're here trying to learn modern Japanese, you would do yourself a huge favour by supplementing your studies with Classical once you've reached at least an intermediate level of competence.
>>

I learned the basics but I don't think it made much of a difference in terms of modern japanese desu. The main difference is just being happier with a few things that appear in proverbs and such, but realy

Not that it's a bad thing to learn anyway, but it definitely isn't the fastest way to modern fluency.

I've never understood that one either. 見とる is "looking", 見とった is "looked", so I'm not sure why 買っとる is "bought" when it seems like it should be "am going to buy/am buying". I'd think it should be 買とった.

That's 見取る, which is not related at all to the おる in 買っておる. That おる is another way of saying 居る.
買とった makes no sense.
>>
>>142225236
Ignore the おる fancy stuff it's the same in standard japanese
ている can often be used for continuous states for an event that happened in the past, like 結婚している for "to be married". It doesn't mean you're literally at your wedding, it just means you're married.

買ってる is being used in the same way. Using something like もう makes it unambiguous as well もう買ってるよ "I've already bought it"
>>
>>142225343

Yeah. You are confusing two entirely different verbs.
>>
>>142225236
There are certain cases where an enduring state doesn't translate into the progressive form. In fact, there is an ambiguity in whether one is in a state of doing an action versus being in a state that resulted from some action. This is usually decided by context and common practices. For example, although 「結婚している」 can technically mean someone is in a chapel currently getting married, it is usually used to refer to someone who is already married and is currently in that married state. We'll now discuss some common verbs that often cause this type of confusion for learners of Japanese.

>That's 見取る

No, it's a Kansai-ben thing. http://kansaibenkyou.net/node/331
>>
>>142225378

>like 結婚している for "to be married"

Oh yeah, I remember reading about that. Took me a second, but I see what you mean, 結婚した could imply was married, but no longer.

>>142225390

>This is usually decided by context and common practices

Figures. I like Japanese, but it's a vague as fuck language (except the rare occasion when it's ridiculously specific).
>>
>>142225396
Oh, well that's just 見ておる too and isn't different than 買っておる at all.
You're just confused about how the て form works. Saying 買っておった would sound weird in that context, because it seems to imply you don't have the thing you bought anymore. You'd be turning the state of having bought it into past tense as well.
>>
>>142225454
>but it's a vague as fuck language

I don't think that explanation really does it justice (I ripped it off of tae kim), I've definitely read much more detailed descriptions of what constitutes the state of being and what constitutes the state of action before, I just can't remember where

Just like you don't really understand the English words properly, many Japanese probably don't really understand the Japanese words properly. All that really matters while reading is recognizing that it's a political [something] (building, system, ideology, etc.).

you don't even need words to learn japanese what are you wasting your time on

just crack open a dictionary and start trudging your way through an anime book

政府、政治、候補, 議員 and so on? I just passed them a while ago, they're not that difficult if you memorize the readings since a lot of them use same kanji and when you can sound out the word the meaning is pretty easy to decipher.

If you like KD's style, just use RTK instead. The KD douche just ripped it off without attribution, fucked it up by changing many perfectly good mnemonics to complete nonsense and then presented it with enough bro語 to turn my shirt pink and pop my collar through TCP/IP.

How long have you been studying Japanese, anon? I studied a year and a half but slowly stopped practicing due to work/life issues. Now I finally have some me time and am getting back into it, but feel a little bad that I already put in 18 months and forgot most of it.

Close to 8 months now, with essentially no exposure to it before that.
I'm more or less satisfied with my progress since I can really understand the LN I'm reading when I put my mind to it. Vocabulary is a bit tight but I'm not a fan of core so I'd rather read with jisho and maybe start a mining deck sometime.

You need to be neuro-atypical to benefit significantly from watching english-subbed anime. For me, I'm batshit autistic, so I literally learned grammar from anime, despite having terrible vocab.
>>
>>142226952
How can you learn grammar from listening to anime?
>>
>>142226973
No idea, but it happened.
>>
>>142226952
>You need to be neuro-atypical
why
all you need to do is actually pay attention to the voices instead of being lazy and only reading the text
>>
>>142226988
That's one of the reasons. You need a strong auditory memory as one of the preconditions for it being automatic. Otherwise you have to focus too hard, so large volumes of anime will be inefficient, since you'll slip focus constantly.
