Tadoku works.

But it doesn't "make sense" for it to work so 9 out of 10 ankidrones won't even give it a shot.

He's not entirely wrong but learning vocab through hearing it and reading it would take far longer than just memorization.

>>142111241
It depends, I actually agree with Steve when it comes to alphabetic languages, but for logographic languages like Japanese anki is the way to go. Even Steve has said he spent months doing brute-force memorization with flashcards when he learned Chinese.

I just got a warning from Firefox that the Rikaichan addon is going to be disabled next time I start up the browser, because it "could not be verified" even though I've had it for years now.

Uninstall it and re-install it. For some reason the auto-update from the unsigned version of Rikaisama to the signed version doesn't work. Mozilla, for security reasons, have made it so that add-ons have to be signed now or Firefox won't let you install them. This update came quite a while ago so you must've been putting off installing a Firefox update for some time for this to not have happened sooner.

It still phones home to Google,[9] and for some time, snuck in a binary blob for voice recognition whenever you started it up.[7] This has been removed by the project maintainers,[8] but it should raise some concern over what else could be lurking in the code.

I didn't see it in the guide, so I was curious what people thought of WaniKani. I've been using it for a month, and it seems to have helped at least a little bit. I've seen Anki suggested a lot, so I was thinking of using them in conjunction. Thoughts?
>>
>>142118780
WK is slow and limits you, even ignoring the fact that it costs money.
Basically you're paying for limitations while anki is customizable for free.
>>
>>142118780
Most people don't like it because it costs money after a certain level and doesn't allow you to study at your own pace because it has its own curriculum
>>
>>142118804
>>142118816

Awesome, the exact things I was looking for. I haven't gotten past the point where it's no longer free, so I may just finish it out to there while I transition over to Anki.
>>
>>142118681
Kind of.

First, you're wasting time. The way spaced repetition works, is that it shows you the words just enough so that you can remember most of them with minimal effort (=reviews). You could be using that time to learn more words instead, or focus on other things (reading, listening, grammar...)

Then, if you do additional reviews that don't count, you're sidestepping the spaced repetition. You'll answer that you remember words after X days, in the intervals, which works fine as long as you keep doing those additional reviews. Eventually the words will have really long intervals, you stop the additional reviews and forget them all by the time the next review is due.

Custom Study-->"Review forgotten cards" is fine, "Review ahead" or "Study by Tag" should be avoided, unless you're actually cramming for an upcoming test

>>142118998
You shouldn't be afraid to add more cards because you think you might not be able to remember them. Not remembering a card just increases your short term review load for those cards. As long as you keep up the reviews, you will eventually get them.

Just adjust the amount of new cards based on how many reviews you can handle, not on how many cards you think you can remember.

Imouto's posts are actually not that easy to read because of the style of speaking he employs (colloquial, childish language). Fresh off the Tae Kim beginners aren't going to have an easy time of that since they've had no exposure to it and can really only make sense of the written/standard style of speaking. The fact that he rarely uses kanji also causes problems since without kanji it's not immediately clear, especially to a beginner, where one word ends and the next begins.

My only desk is my computer desk, which I use for study. I can't clear it up physically but I do tend to disconnect the Internet connection prior to Anki.
In terms of writing down a sort of checklist, my study schedule.routine/whatever is actively tracked in a spreadsheet and at least from personal experience can attest that at least keeping note what is to be done the next day is a pretty great way to keep track of things and tick them off. It's cheap motivation that works.

You'd probably get a lot more discussion by posting in English, though. The target audience would be those who can read Japanese the least, beginners without a solid study routine primarily, right?

You know that you can do whatever you want with an Anki deck without the permission of others? That deck in particular was created in a fashion that allows users to place/replace/remove/move any of the fields and change the layout to suit their personal taste. It is incredibly flexible due the data being rather meticulously added into a wide range of consistent fields.

Another thing you can do is make the alterations you suggested and post the template layout in a pastebin or some online text saving site, provide images of the deck and/or a link to the deck itself and post it to the feedback section on the site linked in the OP. There is a small collection of templates for that deck which have been added to a small list linked in the CoR of which I am pretty sure that anon maintaining it set it up so further template suggestions could be added at any given point in time.

Unlike the retard maintaining the guide in the OP, the anon looking after feedback and the CoR actually responsed to commentary. Give it a go.

Imabi otherwise is not a bad choice as it has a more technical approach than TK so it may be a decent choice for reinforcing some grammar in case you didn't get it already.

Guys I dont understand how you can just say "keep reading". Lets say you read a entire article and only understand 70%, 30% you skip or guess. Of the 70% you read you misunderstood 20% of 70%.

How exactly are you supposed to even learn like that? You may encounter the same structures again and again, but sparsely, in that case how can you expect to even remember?

Lets draw your logic to the far extreme, say someone only has a dictionary for japanese. Eventually they can read articles just by looking up words?

Im not baiting, lets adjust the figures to account for material level all we want.

The question is what exactly should one do when reading? Ask questions? Reread?

To just say "Keep reading" may or may not be effective but lets not fool ourselves into believing there arent ways to enhance your reading, or things that "reading" details which is not obvious in the statement "keep reading".
>>
>>142127841
Reading/listening + understanding some of what is going on + trying to understand = learning

If you can only understand 70% of words, even with a dictionary, then there is a problem because you won't understand enough of the context to help learn the other 30%. But usually what happens when you first start out is that you might only understand 70% of sentences, but you will understand something closer to 90% of words so you can at least make guesses based on context. As long as you're at the level where you can do that, then yes you can learn just by reading or listening.

Ok so my conclusions that i draw from your statement:
>If you can only understand 70% of words, even with a dictionary, then there is a problem because you won't understand enough of the context to help learn the other 30%

1. Read material at a approriate level. Lets say a 85% volcab understanding rate is "approriate".

>But usually what happens when you first start out is that you might only understand 70% of sentences, but you will understand something closer to 90% of words so you can at least make guesses based on context.

2. Rely on context and volcab to infer sentence meaning.

This I can take issue with. You rely on your inference based on context and volcab used in a sentence to understand. Then can you really say you understand the grammar? Where would grammatical analysis of the sentence based on grammar rules come into play here? There are sentences you can understand purely on the context and volcab while completely ignore the grammar because there is a logical conclusion (you can basically predict what will be said).

Then you look at forum posts w/out context and cant understand a damn thing.

I personally feel like i've been burnt badly by this advice so I have to object.

Lastly will somoene please answer the questions I have had since forever?

1. What ARE you supposed to do when you absolutely cannot make sense of something?

2. How do you have reasonable ensurance that your interpretation is correct?

>Then can you really say you understand the grammar? Where would grammatical analysis of the sentence based on grammar rules come into play here?
If you understand the sentence, then you understand the grammar (in that specific context). If you watch an animay and hear ・・・なんてね and the context makes it obvious that the character is saying something like "just kidding" then that's just as good if not better than if you read a grammar textbook for an hour and came to the conclusion that なんてね can be used kind of like "just kidding"

>Then you look at forum posts w/out context and cant understand a damn thing.

Who cares you aren't trying to pretend to be a native speaker you're trying to learn the language. You learn the language and the grammar by seeing it hundreds of times so that it just feels right to you rather than you having to reference a grammar textbook every time you want to speak.

>Anki Essentials v.1.0
>A popular method for creating a text file for importing into Anki is to export a spreadsheet to a CSV (comma-separated values) text file—but be mindful; if any of your content contains commas, this could confuse Anki during the import..
What the fuck? How can that method be popular, if you can't use commata AT ALL in your content?

Am I missing something there?
>>
You may have heard of "extensive reading", look it up. You need to read stuff where you understand like 90% or more. This means you need to find easier books (or use textbooks, which arrange their texts in an ascending order of difficulty).

If you really want to read stuff where you can't really understand the grammar, you need to have an available translation to check your work (readers work well for this).

Rikaisama / Texthooker are the ultimate "hack" for this because they allow you to blend extensive and intensive reading in a way previously not possible, allowing you to read almost anything you want once you have a handle on grammar.
>>
>>142130666
That sounds weird indeed. But anki can use any kind of separator, personally I use tab separated values when I mass import.

Yes, that is what pretty much everyone in this thread recommends, which pretty much makes "standard" 多読 obsolete. The fact that kanji obscure the pronunciation of new words also makes it harder. If I was doing spanish or something easy like that then I would do more normal 多読

and lo(and tiny), its greatest strength was also its greatest undoing
for in pursuit of increasing the bottom line, balancing capex and opex, humanities technologies far outpaced its own evolution

in pursuit of maximizing short term profits, companies began right sizing their human workforces, making ever cheaper products that no one was left employed to buy
thus the market will bear what it will bear, and prices adjusted, total work volume decreased leading to a much easier lifestyle

that is, if their artificially increased carbon cycle doesn't cut the path short

I'm pretty sure that was supposed to be a "I read the rest of the guide but I'm too stupid to make decisions based off of that information, so please spoonfeed me a method" section. It should make that more clear though.

I have another year(or until the summer of next year) before I return to a more proper location. I'll been full NEET for like a year and a half by that time.

The only thing I want is to make use of this time properly so that I can possibly be a normal human bean when I leave this shithole. Namely learning stuff that may possibly make me hirable or figuring out how to make money on my own.

I don't know how to learn things or manage my time though. I'm pretty dumb when I think about it. 130~ IQ means nothing.

When it comes to times like this, I'm always arguing with myself if learning Japanese is even worth it if I can't live long enough to make it to Japan one day.

Blog ends here.

Sounds like it's being used as an "even though/but/despite" here as usual, sort of as in "people in houses with damage at a level of 'half destroyed' continuing to live despite (this fact)"

try treating the phrase before「のが困難で、解体や撤去せざるをえない」as separately, it becomes:
"...in the case of people not yet targeted for relocation with homes are at a damage level of "half destroyed" whose continuing to live there is difficult, and there being choice but to demolish [their houses]"

I've been doing 多読 with a real book also, though.

It's a totally different experience. I'm forced to "guess" more and rely on context more, but when I check my work later on with a translation I find that I'm usually pretty close to the mark.

Also:
>The fact that kanji obscure the pronunciation of new words also makes it harder.
This is true, and yet it shows the strength of kanji as well. I've found that quite often I understand words and text even though I have no idea how to pronounce.

I suggest reading the Anki manual. It's great:
http://ankisrs.net/docs/manual.html#leeches

You can also read Alex Vermeer's Anki Essentials v.1.0 on it:
https://alexvermeer.com/download/Anki-Essentials-v1.0.pdf

(Short answer: In the long term yes, but not strongly for now. "Suspended" means that the leech won't show up until being unsuspended manually. Fix the leech-card by rewording it, adding images... anything that improves retention. Unsuspend it from the card browser or main menu [IIRC].)

Someone should also point out your translation is shit.

Examples:

>要援護者
>disability people

>自宅の被害の程度が「半壊」の人でも住み続けるのが困難で
>translation makes it seem like it's two different groups of people

>解体や撤去せざるをえない
>and (homes) cannot be demolished or evacuated

>対象にすること
>have been decided to get priority

これまで and
>などを伝えていました
など ignored

Is this one of the posts where you post some hard sentence, scamble an attempt of a translation, ask some deceptively simple question and hope noone from this thread will be able to answer correctly and/or call out your shitty mistakes, and only fawn over what kind of stuff you read?
>>

Fuck off you insecure autist, he's asking a comprehension question which is miles away from saying he wants to translate it into English. Why even grace him with a response if you can't answer his "deceptively" simple question? He pointed out the exact piece of grammar he was confused about, the other shit is just guidelines to let you see his basic conception of the sentence and help you answer his question, which you have no reason to believe is insincere.
Translation is a much more difficult process than just reading and making sure you understand what a sentence is saying, and not being able to do it adequately does not necessarily mean you did not comprehend those parts of that sentence.

Then maybe he shouldn't have included the translation in the first place, if he only wanted to ask about the grammar?

And your whiteknighting attempt is pointless when his mistakes include stuff like misunderstanding "せざるをえない" as the extact opposite of what it means.

And I can answer what でも means, it says that even for これまで入居対象ではなかった自宅の被害の程度が「半壊」の人 is 住み続けるのが困難で[す]. SO this guy is close >>142131320, but there's no "but" or "despite" or "thought". Just that "even for" those people is hard to continue to live [in their houses].

people who "just read" tend often to end up "just thinking" they understand something, when they really don't; instead of touching a dictionary, they'd sooner try to "just feel" what a sentence means

what you get is the comical result of a very long and flawed translation of something clearly out of someone's league, and a question asking about a specific part, as if that were the only problem (which is probably what triggered the guy who corrected him)

this dekinai has a good attitude though, I'm sure he'll make it eventually

>>
>>142132050
There's a hard rule here everyone will ignore you if you don't post some sort of confirmation that you get the gist of a sentence. This isn't a translation service after all.

That guy was me by the way. I agree with "even for," that probably fits better in a literal translation of the sentence. My thinking was along the lines of "even though (they are) ~人, it is ~困難"
>>
>>142132585
yeah, but theres a still people who make it just reading, and its not some le epic ironic meme. Like I said before, reading works for people who can dedicate long hours to japanese a everyday, while dictionary and grammar studies is effective for people with short study periods.

First djt goes against anki, now they're going against reading. Next, they're going to say talking to japanese people is actually hindering your studies.
>>
>>142132643
>minium 3 years experience doing [jobID]

This one isn't a real thing you need it's just an unreasonable requirement companies make so they can pretend there are no qualified candidates and convince the government to let them hire Pajeets to do the job for below minimum wage.

Yeah because blindly stumbling through a conversation with broken grammar while the Japanese person nods kindly, compliments your amazing ability, and responds using the simplest and most basic of language is so useful. You're really getting value out of that.

>>
>>142132689
>That guy was me by the way.

Yeah, I presumed, your butthurt made it likely. I wanted to call you out, but wasn't 100% sure.

And your thinking isn't right. It's not "even though" they are (something something) people, it's 困難. It's "even for" people who (something something), it's 困難. This is similar at the first glance, but very different. The hint that should guide you to the correct understanding is the これまで~対象ではなかった. The idea is that 担当者 realized that the people who up until now ( これまで) weren't the target [for relocation] ([入居]対象ではなかった) are also having difficulties living in their houses ( 住み続けるのが困難で[す]). I.e. even those people have difficulties (その人でも...困難で[す]). This is about as good as I can see myself explaining it, so if you don't see it, I don't think I can help you better.

Also I want to point out [入居]対象 is only understood as "target for relocation" contextually in this case. You likely know this, I'm just pointing it out cause it might be confusing for someone else.
