Hey guys, is there a script that could transliterate Tae Kim's guide into full romanji? I want to learn grammar before I bother with kanas and kanjis so I can start watching anime and read before I start with the awful grind.

I'm coming back to try again after a little more than half a year, looking for some advice

For Anki, it recommends not resetting a deck after coming back because there will inevitably be cards you remember even if the process is slow. However after this long is it worth following that advice or would it be faster to just restart the deck? I was around 700 cards in.

>create a new profile (don't delete the old one yet)
>add the deck you were doing before
>set new cards to 700
>make a strong cup of coffee
>force your way through the new cards

Now, depending on your performance, you may decided to:
>(if you remembered quite a lot of cards and/or easily relearned the ones you forgot after having your memory refreshed) return to your old profile the next day
>(if you remembered very little) start a new profile and begin again from scratch

Alternatively, you can just say "fuck it" and just start a mining deck instead (assuming you were using a pre-made deck like Core6K before).

Just trying the deck out again makes me think fully resetting is not what I should now. Also, yes it's the standard 6k deck though I had kanji radical deck I was working through and a general kanji deck I had began but for less than a week.

For another method, what about halting new cards or heavily limiting them and increasing reviews for a few weeks?

Yeah, it's probably a good idea to turn off new cards for a few days while you get back into the swing of things.

As for increasing reviews, you should have already set your max reviews/day setting to the maximum level (9999).
>>
hi, currently in the process of learning hiragana as well as a bit of grammar. At what point do you start to learn words with the characters you've learned? I'm not too eager or in a rush to get to that point I just want a better understanding of what happens and when and the process of learning.

>>
>>142072856
If you don't have your reviews set to (practically) unlimited, you will interfere with the spaced repetition system which Anki employs since it won't be able to show you cards when they are due if there are too many other cards due on the same day.

You need to give adequate context if you're going to ask a question like this.

Your translation is more or less correct, it's just an impressive-sounding title the manga artist gave himself because he's proud of churning out large numbers of gag characters.

Kino no Tabi

If you want an example, this is the very beginning:

Literally easier to comprehend than a nukige about some guy moving in to live with a bunch of girls..

Not him, IIRC ぬ is the same thing as ない, you can swap them and it means the same things, ぬ is just an archaic form.

Well, I say "archaic" only because everyone else does. It is far less archaic than something like "['twas]" in English and actually comes up all the time.

>It is recommended that you have a Tae Kim level of grammar and a vocab base of the 2000 most common words before you start reading.
Is this consistent with your experience?

Did you start reading before or after completing Core2K?
>>
My VNR doesn't catch the whole displayed line for a reason, notably missing out on the hiragana

What do
>>
>>142077999
Get started on {Tae Kim, Genki, Japanese the Manga Way} while you download Anki and work on {Core6k, RtK}
>>
>>142078132
The sooner you start the more vocab you need to look up. You can start whatever you want to read 200 words into 2k if you want to, just be prepared to look up a shitload.

2k is the recommended point because that's when the deck's structure has a slight shift, going over some basic words' slightly different readings/meanings.

Have a look at the A Dictionary of Intermediate Grammar, page 315 (ぬ). Alternatively, use the DoJG Anki deck, which has every main entry of each volume, with notes. Pic related is a stitched together example of said card. The deck will differ from person to person in terms of general style, colouration, etc. but the image is enough to get an idea of the general layout.
>>
>>142078132
There's no need to perfect Tae Kim level grammar, but you should at least read through all of it once so you can recognize grammar points when you encounter them while reading. As for the vocab, you can begin earlier if you want to, but if you do I really recommend you pick up something that has furigana or a vocabulary list like Yotsuba.

Started reading yotsuba shortly after I learned kana and read like 10 chapters of tae kim.
It wasn't too hard, a decade of watching anime probably helped with figuring it out.

My experience has been to take whatever resources look good and learn my own way. Started reading alongside study when I felt like it, no idea if it was 2000 words into vocab study or 200 words; it was on whim. From memory I read through the first section of two of Kim's grammar guide on his site and dropped it in favour of the book Japanese: The Manga Way and the website based programme: Visualizing Japanese Grammar. By the time I'd read and watched through the aforementioned two resources I had already read through the first two volumes of よつばと!.

The guide has generic advice for learners but you've got to understand that the thread is for autodidacts and such people tend to go their own way in terms of personal study.

This is awful advice, if the guide anon wrote this then he's an idiot and we should ignore his guide. You should be reading ASAP, basically as soon as you're capable of understanding what Yotsuba says.

If the choice is between working through Tae Kim or whatever and reading I definitely think the former is better, to make sure you're at least aware of much of the basic grammar, if not necessarily in command of it. When you're done with Tae Kim though I agree you should start reading regardless of how far you've made it into Core.
>>
Just looking for some clarification:

>たばこ屋
I was under the impression that foreign words were generally written in katakana. Why is たばこ in hiragana?
>>
>>142079401
In the longer run it's near meaningless whether or not you start reading a few weeks earlier or even six months earlier. Really, those new to language learning are probably not in the best position to throw around arbitrary ought statements. It could just as easily be stated that you should stop coming to these threads entirely after finding it and bookmarking the resource page.

>>142079696
Similar reason why to "kitchen" in English isn't written closer to the Hindi spelling. It really isn't considered foreign by this point in time.

What could possibly go wrong when a complete beginner without any knowledge of basic vocab like core2k or kanji readings starts doing his own word mining?
>>
>>142082443
Never mind. Found them.
>>
>>142078132
I read about half of tae kim and never finished and started reading at about 500 words maybe. I don't think it's really a huge deal when you start. Just read until you get burnt out (which will happen quick in the beginning) and just keep trying over again and it gets better
>>
>>142079271
If I drink my anki retention goes down to like 40%
>>

>>
>>142082618
Are you projecting your own retarded mistakes on people or what?
Rikai gives the correct reading first and that's what most people use for mining.
How kanji readings work is one of the first things tae kim explains.

Hello, complete beginner.
>>
>>142082468
Depends what you call a particle. That's definitely way more than what you need to learn about before reading. Lots of those are easy enough to get from rikai-chan and a single example sentence.
>>
>>142082618
Absolutely nothing. Your example is dumb. You're even more likely to make dumb misunderstandings with words you learn out of context, and reading a lot means you will fix whatever mistakes you do make much more quickly. VNs in particular with their voices lines mean you aren't gonna be misreading common words.
>>
>>142083171
core has example sentences for context. Way to talk out of your ass when you haven't even seen a core deck in your life.
>>
>>142083307
Yeah because 2000 artificial example sentences is totally comparable to seeing the word 50 times a day in different contexts you fucking dumbass.
>>
>>142083347
So core2k is artificial, but I'm sure the random moege trash that you can read with 0 vocab has much more natural sounding language, like いやぁぁぁぁそこ見っちゃだめ and 先輩、いくうううう

>>

I mean the necessary ones to learn before you start reading. The ones that you will almost immediately have to look up if you don't already know them, as opposed to the more obscure ones which you might not run into unless you're reading something a bit more difficult.
>>
>>142084369

still struggling with kana after 6 months seems like a pretty extreme example

at 6 months in I probably had somewhere around 1800-1900 mature kanji cards in anki and there's no way I would make a mistake reading kana

I'm 7 months in now and I've finished a couple manga volumes and started reading an LN in that time. Although I can only read maybe six or seven pages an hour with a dictionary, probably twenty times slower than something in English at the same level of difficulty
>>
>>142089682
I wouldn't say struggling to read kana, just still learning to read it smoothly and quickly. My point is that even after you "learn" Japanese it takes a long time to get good at it.

Never saw the panty vending machines, but once, when I was travelling by ferry from Osaka to Hokkaido, our ship stopped briefly around Sendai. I and several other passengers walked through an open field to a nearby grocery store to buy snacks, and there in the middle of this wide-open field with nothing else about, was this tiny, wooden shack. The shack was full of porno vending machines.

I will always remember fondly:

Look up 厠 or toilet depending on the language to get to the relevant bit.

It captures some of the charms of dimly-lit traditional Japanese architecture, and the process of it being altered or displaced by modern and Western features. As someone who enjoys dimly lit spaces more than the brightly lit spaces that are more common these days, I really enjoyed reading this.

>>142095525
that doesn't sound like it has much to do with storage space, how many books would you even need to cram into it to get even close to filling that up?

a single book is usually less than 3 MB, and a kindle has around 4 GB storage
>>
>>142095351
how did you manage to uncover this long lost ancient symbol
>>
>>142095701
Oh wait, I was having a Kindle Fire, not just a regular Kindle. I'm using books that are collections of pictures and pdfs of scanned shit in addition to the lighter formats, so the thing does fill up really quickly (and I had around 13GB of storage). I don't have a convincing explanation for the performance-storage space relationship, it's just something I noticed over time. It could just be a result of long usage too. And restarting only helps temporarily.
>>
>>142095701
Sounds like the kindle is doing something with the stored files (caching? data mining for ads? maintaining a database?), which gets more and more intensive as the device fills up with files.
It's piss-poor design which would be hardly adequate even coming out of a no-name Chinese reader, really a shamefur dispray for Amazon.

Oh, absolutely. It can frequently be very useful for remembering Japanese-origin words that would otherwise be a bitch.

One word that kept fucking me up was 古 (いにしえ). I kept misremembering it as いしにえ. I finally had to look up its origin and I haven't forgotten it since. It's:

「去ぬ」の連用形「いに」+ 過去助詞「き」の連体形「し」+ 場所・方向・時間を表す接尾「え(へ)」(This え is the same え as in 行方不明, BTW)

In other words: "Whence things have gone" = The past.

Takes a little work to deconstruct it, but you learn a lot in the process.

General threads can be too fast, not everyone participating reads every post. I'd say half the people don't even read half the posts, I know I sure didn't. For example I'd say you're lucky if 10 of the 96 people in here read your post.

Post a cute anime picture to boost it up to like 12

Every situation is different.

I am in a very good position for that sort of work because I am very comfortable with formal, academic Japanese, I live in Japan and my wife teaches at a university, so I have contacts to exploit. Further, there are not that many people around here to compete with me for the work.

Contrast that with people wanting to translate video games, anime, or manga where the competition is immense and cutthroat. Or the situation in Canada, where English-French or French-English translation pays next to nothing because so many people are educated and fluent in both.

I live in Canada, so it's high in demand because even though the country is bilingual, not many people are simultaneous bilinguals (as in exposed and learning both languages equally from birth). The recall ability in a translator in much quicker in simultaneous bilinguals than in second language learners.

That ability does affect salary since speed is key.

Probably has more to do with constant exposure to both languages than learning both at a young age... learned English in 5th grade and got good with the Internet, now I forget a lot of French words and expressions.
>>
>>142104591

Private, would certainly not say no to public though for the extra benefits.

I actually always had the skill but never considered working in the field, and suddenly it hit me that I should be doing this. I realized that a job should be something you're naturally good at, not necessarily something you absolutely love (as you will grow to hate that thing or at least not love it as much).

Have to say I've never been happier with what I do.
>>

>>142104936

>>
>>142105044
Well I know a lot of people who have spoken French primarily all their lives and yet can't write to save their lives, not just spelling or grammar but also word choice. Also if you learn a language only to be exposed to daily conversation and simple texts then obviously you won't be as good as if you were reading books. But learning a language from birth doesn't magically make you better at it, you just happen to have a jumpstart of n years at learning it (probably less efficiently than someone seriously challenging themselves while learning, but most people don't).

No, it's a direct object marker used with the transitive verb 孕む, "to be pregnant with, to contain, to hold". 一人ずつ is an adverbial phrase indicating that each fruit contain one beautiful child.

I think your eyes just sort of glided over the verb somehow and everything became confusing from there.

This is one of those times that the furigana isn't so much an actual, accepted reading as it is a reference, or explanation.

A fusa, normally written as 房 is a decorative tassel. A 流蘇 (https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%B5%81%E8%98%87) refers to a certain kind of body ornament, popular amongst Manchu women during the Qing dynasty.

In other words, the furigana ふさ is just helpfully explaining to the reader basically just what the fuck a 流蘇 is. That's all.

Context or whatever you prefer. I know it sucks, but that's how it goes.
There are even compounds that have different readings, like 昨日 (kinou / sakujitsu) and 一昨日 (ototoi / issakujitsu).

One case I where I know about distinction is with 行く, which can be either "iku" and "yuku", and that the latter carries a literary tone. So if you see it written in poetry, it's probably yuku. If you see it casually, probably iku.

>>142107941
I find your percentages really concerning, and what's with these brown cards?

I don't want to antagonize beginners, but ~50 % retention is concerning. You could check your true retention (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/613684242) but I doubt it's any better.

Don't listen to music while doing Anki, don't do it when you're tired and don't constantly interrupt your session by checking 4chan.

You might want to put a day aside and just do a massive custom study -> review forgotten cards session or something, otherwise you'll always feel like you have holes in your progress.

Mature card correct rate doesn't actually correspond to learning progress though, it's mature card graduation count that does.

Mature card correct rate doesn't correspond to efficiency, either. Flunking the same 1000 cards every single day and having like one new mature every day will still have you wasting almost all of your time for a very small number of newly graduated mature cards, and youre mature correct rate can still be 100%.

It's inappropriate to insist on telling someone they've got something wrong when your standards aren't objective either.
