I keep finding myself going through sentences and kind of understanding the gist but not feeling like I actually know what the hell is being said. I've gone through multiple grammar guides but I guess it's just not sticking or something. Anyone else dealt with this?

But typing Japanese does provide benefit, and everyone is just shitposting anyway.

It's not like you get corrected if you go post on /int/ instead or anything. You might get told if your nip is so bad as to be incomprehensible but you'd get told that here too.
>>
>>142038863

In hindsight that was a dumb question. Anyhow, it's frustrating because despite all the shit on grammar I've read I still don't feel like I've got enough of a grasp on it. I've been through two decent length RPGs which of course have a lot of text and I'm currently working through a third. I suppose I've gotten a bit better but when I have such a hard time understanding things aside from fairly basic sentences I feel like an idiot.
>>
>>142038949
I post in Japanese here all the time in hopes of being corrected. Its not like I actually have any nihonjin friends to talk to or anything.

So I am going back to Japan to live for a year working in a lab in Osaka, which is where I lived for a year as an English teacher before med school. I only got to N4, but wanna buckle down and apply my med school autism-tier study tactics to Japanese.

Gonna open up my old Core2k deck and cry at how much I don't remember. Might even *gasp* get WaniKani again because i like it.

But for grammar has anyone used nihongo so-matome? I think I am gonna try it as I've heard lots of good things about it for moving beyond Tae Kim etc.

How do you guys keep up/stay fresh with your Japanese. I've gone two years without needing it/using it and watching the occasional anime or reading the occasional facebook post does not at all keep it fresh for me. Worried about losing it all again when I come back again

>I keep finding myself going through sentences and kind of understanding the gist but not feeling like I actually know what the hell is being said.
That's actually the majority of anki users ITT.

We string vocab together into the semblance of a sentence and compete for who can get their reps done the fastest so they can feel the illusion of learning.

I know it's a long shot, but is there any translated resource that explains the etymology of most kanji, or kanji as a whole? Wiktionary has info on some of them but not all. I ask because I've always been naturally drawn to the topic in english, and I feel like knowing what the fuck the japs were thinking when they created/combined some kanji would help me learn a lot more than rote memorization.

This only happens if you stop studying. If you're only studying because you're in Osaka and don't care about learning Japanese apart from when you're there, then you probably will stop studying.
>>
What are some good grammar books in Japanese? I feel like I might be able to grasp certain concepts better in the language itself rather than having English in between.
>>
Why didn't they just create 5 extra characters for the "p" sounds? It gives me fucking eyestrain trying to tell whether I'm looking at 濁点 or 半濁点 in small fonts (e.g. in furigana).

I need to find a VN that makes me diamonds so I'm forced into it I think.

it's not hard to look up words in a dictionary if you already can read Japanese since you know how to get by finding the desired worda through other kanji and similar readings.

most of the paragraphs seem from encyclopedias or newspapers and are just describing things in the typical Japanese neutral written style with Kanji rather than kun readings which makes it easier to comprehend but rather hard to read for foreigners without 100% Kanji knowledge

>>
>>142043995
Yeah the implication that writing in kana would make it easier for foreigners to read is quite a big tell too.
>>
>>142044072
Kanji make it easier to read for foreigners. Ever happened to read Japanese books for grammar school children with about 0 Kanji and everything in Hiragana? If you are not a native, Kanji tell you where words and and give you a meaning, even if you cannot read it
>>
>>142044042
not him but
>most of the paragraphs seem from encyclopedias or newspapers and are just describing things in the typical Japanese neutral written style with Kanji rather than kun readings which makes it easier to comprehend but rather hard to read for foreigners without 100% Kanji knowledge

I'm more curious about what point he was trying to make in the first place. Was he just upset at the suggestion that someone who had only studied for a month claimed to understand something?

Also, in response to his more recent post, it's not like being from material for learners conflicts with it being newspaper style or whatnot. Stuff for "learners" can be at any level.

the guy he replied to clearly had zero idea what he was talking about yet stated several extremely misleading things with total confidence

that's a pretty textbook example of "blind leading the blind"

"typical Japanese neutral style" is just baffling and not a phrase that means anything to anyone

"Kanji rather than kun readings"
this just fundamentally doesn't make sense at all
everything in Japanese that isn't for kids or learners is written with kanji and on top of that no one would refer to hiragana spellings of words or to kanji w/ furigana as "using kun readings"
>>
>>142044320
I am just saying that this written style is easier to comprehend than spoken style. Basically you don't even need to know every Kanji as long as you know enough to comprehend the gist. Most of the statements can be derived from the context of a few words. I could never read every single kanji or string here but I do know what the words mean

it's not hard to read but hard to comprehend if you only have Hiragana since they don't convey meaning

take this as an example and figure out the meanings:
しょくじたいへんですね。

>>142044820
On point, I managed to mix it up in English but I should rather have sticked to jukugo and wago

Most of you get the concept that there is a written and spoken style Japanese, right? I love Kanji and jukugo but as soon as you enter the spoken realm, you notice that you just cannot speak all day in jukugo since you will not be understood if you try to avoid wago as much as possible
>>
>>142045136
If you're bent on studying kanji then just do a radical deck followed by a sizeable kanji deck on Anki, having both recall and recognition cards is a good way to make sure you remember them but it does eat up your time pretty hard

Wanikani is garbage because it costs money and sticks you with an inflexible learning plan

Former is written. You can differentiate 人 and 入 from using stroke order. This doesn't work in text/print, at all, so they added a little bit on the top of 入 to make it really stand out. If you're writing, write it like it should be written (i.e. the left)

Spaces are cheating. Unless they were already there originally, in which case you just proved his point by demonstrating that kana only texts are so annoying/ambiguous that they had to find a way to break them up.
>>
>>142045817
this is just a children's story and the spaces and punctuation were in the same place originally. of course they are ambiguous and that's my point here. It is easier to work with simple Japanese with kanji, even if you have to look them up and learn them than trying to read hiragana only texts for Japanese children. Japanese children have the advantage of having at least the spoken language already learned whereas foreigners usually start at 0 and therefore should advance in spoken and written language at the same time.
>>
>>142045742
don't ask me, I use jisho to look up just about everything anyway since my vocabulary is pretty small
this doesn't seem particularly hard though especially with the spaces
if you rely on kanji to comprehend japanese then you're probably a hack
>>
The reason why Japanese use kanji has nothing to do with readability of the text per say. It has to do with connecting modern Japanese literature with older Japanese literature. If Japanese started using a completely different writing system, then all the text written in the past would be lost to new generations. It's to connect Japan's past with its present.

In contrast, this is exactly why Mao Zedong pushed the simplified Chinese characters, not to increase literacy but so hat new generations wouldn't be able to read older texts without learning the traditional characters, thus controlling what the people could and couldn't read.
>>

>>
>>142046138
I think it's more that a lot of words (漢語) were created from kanji rather than the other way round, so the whole language actually makes less sense if you took away kanji. Even when Japanese people speak I believe they are conscious of the kanji in the words they are using.

And when creating new words kanji are the building blocks of that too (although recently katakana is often used for new words as well)

It's kind of like how English spelling isn't purely phonetic, the spelling contains clues of word origin etc. Even though spelling everything phonetically would make more sense in theory, the written language loses a lot of meaning that way.

Does anyone have the issue of pic related? The Android screenshot actually looks a lot better than that on the actual device and I can pinch-zoom all the way in and it appears smooth at end three times that size. For whatever reason shit looks aliased on Windows whereas the exact same font and font size is rendered far nicer to look at. To the point that I've more or less switched to using the Android device entirely for reps, but it is a fair bit slower overall and would rather limit it to using while in bed or on the shitter.

Tried going through the display settings and calibrating smooth font thingo for font rendering that it has and I've tried disabling it. Both end up looking the same.

Last time I asked the redditors over at /g/ they started sperging over the fact that I wasn't using a meme OS and that my Android device wasn't whatever current overpriced model which was being mass advertised on the board at the time, which I'm pretty sure was a Windows tablet with keyboard set up, ironically. The toolkit Anki is built on does not currently support high resolution displays, which may result in text looking a little blurry. It's possible to make the text crisper, but it will result in the buttons and text in the interface becoming smaller. If you'd like to make that trade-off, you can right click on the Anki icon, and in the properties, compatibility section, disable "display scaling on high DPI".

It really is, man. Hope you get as much out of that deck as I have. We've got it made in DJT compared to learners who have no idea about half the goodies we have access to in this thread.

>My concern was if it would be a waste of time
The amount of time in the past week you've spent on 4chan is likely more than any time you could ever waste on stroke order for kana. I wouldn't worry too much about "wasting time" when really if you are taking advantage of Anki and the like, you're already cutting potentially years off the time it would take you to reach such a level as most "normal" methods out there.

This is complete bullshit. Anki is nice and all but input amount trumps all.

Anki is nice and all but really your level of input matters more than anything.

Out of curiosity how long have you been exposing yourself to kana after you memorized all of them?

I've been studying for around six months probably, and I'm familiar enough with the kana to the point where I immediately recall each symbol in my head upon hearing it and reading them is second nature, though I don't know if that's because I spent so much time absently writing kana while doing kanji reps or if it's just a natural progression from seeing and reading them for so often and for so long.

I did see a post here where someone mentioned they couldn't finish a portion of some test that required filling in blanks in a sentence with kana after listening to it being spoken out loud.

Been in a but of a rut of late and it had a negative impact on Japanese study. Feeling shitty the other night I decided to read through 月見荘のあかり for a fap then sleep. >>142041673

I know that site. It can be useful for developing mnemonics, but the vast majority of etymologies given there are not accurate, just folk etymologies.

That doesn't make them useless, but if you *really* want to know a character's provenance, you'll have to consult something like the 漢字源. No, you're not going to find a translation, but if you're curious enough to care about such things, you can probably understand its etymologies.

Here is an example (note that 寺 is not a combination of 土 amd 寸):

寺: 会意兼形声。[寸(て)+(音符)之<し>(足で進む)]。手足を動かして働くこと。侍や接待
の待の原字。転じて、雑用をつかさどる役所のこと。また、漢代に西域から来た僧を鴻臚寺という接待所に泊めたため、のち寺を仏寺の意に用いるようになった。

Is there any point using anki to recall the meaning of words? The meaning is usually always obvious from the context it's used in, is it safe to say the main thing anki should be used for is just remembering readings?
>>
>>142054514
>is it safe to say the main thing anki should be used for is just remembering readings?
Absolutely agree with this, you will learn the meaning by encountering the word a bunch of times in context, or looking it up in a dictionary for an obscure one. Of course having one or two translations to give you a general idea does no harm, but trying to remember specific translations for specific words is a very bad idea.
>>
>>142054514
The whole point of a vocab deck is to remember what words mean. That the meaning is usually obvious from context is simply not true, good luck trying to read anything without audio or visuals if you think that way. Words are what make up context in the first place if you're reading a book.

>>142054626
You shouldn't even need to drill for readings, those are a non-obstacle and will come easily through exposure if you are familiar with kanji.
Though I agree that you can learn meanings this way too, by using a dictionary. I don't even use anki for vocab, all I do is just review kanjdic2 keywords for the same couple thousand common kanji at this point.
>>

I'm so sorry.
>>
>>142054514
There's no point in learning readings unless you plan to read things out loud.
>>
>>142054817
Using anki to remember the meanings of single isolated words just seems retarded though, I mean you never see them isolated while reading something, and context plays a massive role in understanding them

Readings on the other hand don't have anything to do with context so it makes sense to use anki for those

Also personally at least 80% of the words I fail in anki are failed because I forgot the reading not the meaning

>Using anki to remember the meanings of single isolated words just seems retarded though
you're free to have your personal opinion
>I mean you never see them isolated while reading something, and context plays a massive role in understanding them
it's possible to use anki to review words "in context", though I will admit that it is very difficult to find or make a high quality deck for use in such a way

>>142055059
what else are you going to do with a vocab deck other than memorize word meanings though
a kanji deck makes more sense if you want to be able to intuitively read words the same way you claim to intuit their meanings
It's a fair statement to say context plays a massive role in understanding words, but probably not to the great extent you're putting it, after all you will run across loads of sentences that contrive new context for which you will have to use a dictionary.
I guess anki is a preemptive dictionary

>>142051080

I'd say the most important in these tests in any language is to know where you have to look for the answer.

For example in this question :

you can completely disregard the first paragraph as soon as you see that it's もう一つ.

then you look at the example, and it says you need a certain point of 成熟 for 学習. this eliminates options 2 and 3

you proceed to look down, and you see it says 学習 is faster with more 成熟. this makes 1 more likely to be the answer than 4, so you choose 1.

If you had unlimited time you could go back and read the first part and stuff, but since you don't, you just choose 1 and proceed to the next question.

"Proper" cursive and fast handwriting are two completely different things, especially in Japanese. Writing "proper" cursive borders on calligraphy and is pretty slow. When there is a need to write fast, most people just smear. Some smeared Kanji will look like their cursive forms, however.
