Why did he quit making videos?

If えい is supposed to be pronounced as a prolonged え why is the i audible sometimes, like in the word セイフク? Is it because it's written in katakana and was originally a foreign word? I'm pretty sure that I've heard the same from words that are written in hiragana or kanji and aren't foreign too.

Related question. Are there any two-kanji words that have the same meaning when you switch the order of the kanji? Or are used interchangeably, at least. I vaguely recall encountering one once early on in my studies, but it seems somewhat impossible in retrospect.

anyone here read medaka box? Everyone said nisio writing being hard was just a meme, but I swear this is way more difficult to understand/has way more kanji I don't know than other shounen manga. For reference I just read through koe no katachi in a little under a week and felt pretty comfortable, needed to look up maybe a word per page on average.
>>
>>141995399
Some kid's mom saw one of his vids.
>>
>>141995231

The 切腹 腹切 that someone else posted is a good example, but most of the ones that are identical in meaning and pronunciation tend to be extremely obscure.

A hint to reading them, though: when the char implying action comes first, it's an on'yomi, last, a kun'yomi. The different SVO and SOV structures of Chinese and Japanese respectively are helpful here and quite useful for reading new and unknown compounds.

I'm not actually sure about what they mean with the (En,Ja) ones, I know when you beat the game in the PAL version at least you could select japanese voice overs, but I can't remember if that was japanese text also, and I don't really feel like playing again in english just to play in japanese.

I didn't know Vol 3 and 4 were up, though. Only 1 showed up for me earlier.

They're still missing one. And no Dark Cloud. As well as a bunch of other PS2 games. Earlier systems seem to have plenty of japanese roms available. I've tried searching in japanese as well.

I only read it in English, but towards the end (sometime 100+ chapters in) there are a literal shitton of word plays. Like, switching kanji and breaking the fourth wall is the topic of an entire arc if not more iirc. I imagine that to get pretty difficult, although I regret not going through it in Japanese.

Well, shut my mouth, they don't have it...

Literally every class you take for the first year/year and a half of Japanese will call te-form the "command" form.

It's an easier concept to grasp than "connective form with a shitload of additional grammar."

teiru might get covered in an elementary Japanese class, but actual te auxiliaries are left until intermediate level.

Kanji isn't a phonetic script so the pronunciation of the characters changes depending on the word they're being used in. Most kanji have at least 2 possible readings (pronunciations), and some can have considerably more than that.

Because the kanji and okurigana are identical in 止める (とめる) and 止める (やめる), and 辛い (からい) and 辛い (つらい), the only way you can tell which reading (pronunciation) is intended is by seeing the words used in context.

Alright, for various reasons that I won't get into (suffice it to say I have to do about an hour and a half of working out each day), I don't have much time in my day for studying. What you need to be able to read is a good sense of grammar first and foremost and then an ability to recognize words or at least familiar kanji pronunciations so you can look them up on jisho quickly (and remember them; if your memory sucks don't bother reading before doing core2k).
Drawing them into google translate is a good fallback for when you run into a new word with kanji you don't know how to read.

A good grasp of simple grammar is the most important thing you can get, but it comes from exposure and not from Tae Kim. He does provide a good foundation for it though.

I recommend this blog. It has some very difficult japanese sentences with detailed explanations, and does one short chunk at at time. It has pictures to go along with it to help your understanding.

I've found my brain tends to fry if I do too much Anki and I tend to forget new kanji faster than I can commit them to memory, leading to a feedback loop that will inevitably end with me having to review all 2k cards each day. My fear is that I'll get so bogged down in the studying that I'll never reap the rewards of pornographic anime games.
>>142001841
I would fully expect it to be slow, but it'd be replacing my general gaming time, so I'd have plenty of time. Just can't spend too much time studying because my brain will fry and I'll fuck up on my Ankis and have unwieldy review times.
>>142001860
I'm not good at looking things up with one hand.
>>142002030
As has been said, I can use a text hooker. I like to think I have a decent memory, but considering how slow-going my Anki studying is, I'm not so sure. Maybe Anki is just too repetitive and not fun for me. That said, how can I get a good sense of grammar? I figured going to visual novels instead of manga/light novels after Tae Kim would be optimal (horizontal text, able to use a text hooker to look things up, VOs to go with the reading), but is there something more I need?

Holy shit I knew it!
Fuck I hate it when that shit happens, you think "what the fuck is wrong I know it's pronounced やめる" and you think you are stupid and then you find out you weren't so stupid and it's actually both correct.

Same shit if you learn a kanji that has a similar meaning in every word and then it goes full retard and means something completely different in another word.

I fucking hate Japanese, but I also love it and this shit won't stop me.

Horizontal text and text hookers aren't as easy as furigana with simple words and easy grammar in beginner manga. Just reading a few of those will cement the basics of grammar and vocab. If you have absolutely no interest in manga though, do whatever will motivate you best.

Well, I don't mean to say I have no interest in manga. My end game is light novels, but it's easier for me to replace my game time with pornographic games than non-pornographic reading material. A text hooker works fine for VNs and such. I find OCR to be hot garbage though, so recognizing kanji and gleaning words from context is still a good skill for reading manga or physical media.
Vertical text is a non-obstacle by the way.

I think a couple months of watching anime with subtitles as training wheels made a significant difference in my ability to understand simple grammar, like what you will probably find in manga and VNs. Basically, exposure is number 1 and it helps if you have a lot of context like voice and visuals to go with it. I haven't read any VNs but they're probably not bad in that department, so they should also serve as good practice as long as you have a way to make sure your interpretations of everything are correct.
>>
>>142002981
>as you have a way to make sure your interpretations of everything are correct

Wrong, you just have to make sure they eventually become correct, but you'd have to be brain dead to misinterpret most things after the 20th time you see them

Please dont divide grammar into artificial categories like "basic, advanced, inter"; the point is all grammar may appear at any time.

That being said some of the advanced topics only appear in formal writing, but ive seen some of them in my mongolian horse paintings often too.

Just man up and fucking remember them all. Dont focus on this bullshit about skill level just keep reading.

>how can I get a good sense of grammar?

>>
>>142003321
That's pretty much realistic though. JLPT doesn't even test conversational or writing ability, the whole exam is a joke.
>>
>>142003280
The thing is that making a guess doesn't mean you don't understand it. If you guess right, then it means you do understand it.

In a sense, you're making a guess every time you interpret a sentence. It's just a question of at what level do you lose confidence in your guess. And, the majority of mistakes (as in, things you don't understand but THINK you do, not just thinks you don't understand) will not impact your interpretation of the story, because either the line wasn't all that important or it will be obvious in 2 more lines when the conversation doesn't makes sense any more.

>>
>>142003872
好き

買い

味方
>>
>>142003750
From left to right

- 見方 should be 味方 (mikata - an ally)
- The lower "box" in 買う should have two horizontal lines, not one (eye radical, not day radical)
- You subs are covering it up but i think it's the wrong kanji and should say 好き instead of 奴き
>>
>>142003484
Yeah that makes sense. The point at which I lose confidence in my guesses completely and the narrative gets unclear is when I go and try to find out if there's some piece I'm missing.
It seems to be a problem of interpreting the context of a sentence rather than its grammar or vocab for the most part.

Also if somebody's just starting out, I'd suggest AGAINST reading what they truly wanted to read anyway, because they would be spoiling themselves while not even enjoying it to the fullest. Get a bunch of throwaway/next-on-the-list materials instead

Todays flash cards went really well. I did them about 15-20 minutes faster than usual, and I feel confident they'll stick until tomorrows reviews even. On days like this it really does feel like I can learn Japanese. And it supposedly gets even easier past the core2k mark when less new kanji gets introduced. Awesome!

1. Read material of your choice that is not impossibly hard for you to read

4. Read at a faster speed and improve

For someone who's about to read his first non-textbook material, everything will be impossibly hard to read. That's the point. No matter what you read, you will barely understand half of it.

Thought so as well at first. Just do 2 or more cards whith the same Kanji and On- or Kunyomi to get used to it. I'm now over 1000 Kanji in and got used to it. At some point Kanji don't look so so confusing anymore. And the more complex ones are easier to remember because they look very different from other ones.
Radicals is also good for some ppl, you should just see what works best for you

The most interesting part about placebo is that its effect can still apply even if you know it's placebo.

I'm pretty sure that way of thinking has given me super powers.

The kanji play and puns are relatively easy to understand, all the cultural references are another thing altogether, search machines are your friends here. I don't know what they mean with complex grammar because I can't remember anything that I couldn't understand. I've read them a longer time ago though so I don't remember them well.
Regardless you sure as hell won't need 10 years. It'll take you quite a few years, if you want to read it physical/without dictionary though.

Keep in mind that there are a lot people exaggerating a lot stuff for various reasons. Same with your Monobeno question, it's a great game but I'm pretty sure the main reason why it gets brought up frequently here is it being untranslated, so they have something to boast about (there's always that one infamous untranslated work that gets praised to heaven and when you get around to finally read/play it, it's not really that good) and the smug of course.

Never even seen this used as a verb, the other one is a million times more common.
>>
>>142031664
Well I've personally seen the kanji 咳 a lot more than 呟, つぶやく tends to always be written in kana
>>
>>142031860
咳 is certainly used a lot, but rarely as a verb like 咳く.

I've gotten into a really bad habit of mining every word I see that I haven't already mined, even if it's obvious what it means from the kanji and has a predictable reading

My unseen card amount is too fucking high but the hoarder inside me can't stop adding every god damn word I see

If the words are all obvious you should be able to do loads of new cards without any difficulty and catch up.

Do you have some kind of halting condition or are you just going keep adding word until you've added the entire lexicon
