I'm nine months into my studies, and I still haven't bothered to learn any kana. My plan is to OCR any text with my smartphone and turn it into Romaji. So far, I've gotten farther than all of my peers who are wasting time memorizing squiggly symbols.

Why is everyone here doing things the hard way in 2016? It seems like a waste of time.

Oh, also, you'll want to edit the keymap since the default keymap assumes you're using a Japanese keyboard which has special keys for switching between character types and such. Look through the keymap for "Hiragana" and "Katakana" and rebind all the "Hiragana" and "Katakana" keys to a new key combination of your choosing (I use CTRL+1 for Hiragana and CTRL+2 for Katakana). There are other special keys which you can rebind if you want, but I couldn't be bothered so I didn't.

To switch between Mozc and your native keyboard, just press SUPER+SPACE.

Didn't even think I'll get that far back then, but thanks to helpful advice from my DJT senpais I stuck with it and progressed a lot, read a bunch of cool shit and had fun learning for a whole year.

How are you guys getting correct 80+%? I usually have 75-80% until I add in the new cards for the day, but then those weigh me down to around 60-75% correct, occasionally even 50% if I have had a difficult day.

>The west also has "free" services.
Name one which asks for all that sort of personal information for an Internet connection.
>>
>>141959849
According to statistics, the rate of your correct answers in anki is closely related to your IQ with a baseline 80% good at 100 IQ, increasing by 1% for every 3 points of IQ above 100. Anything below 80% means you're probably too dumb to learn Japanese.

You aren't forced to give that away in order to create an account, ergo it is an irrelevant point of contention if if Facebook was remotely relevant in this context. Signing up for Facebook isn't a legally binding contract.

African average is borderline retarded. Average in Western countries is ~100.
>>
>>141960228
No anon, average of humanity is 100.
>>
>>141960208
Well, I read a wikipedia page on radicals once and look up new kanji in a dictionary as I encounter them, if that counts.
>>
>>141960274
Isn't it the average of people to take the test? I really doubt African tribesman are standing around taking IQ tests. In any case, IQ isn't meant to be correlated with education so even if anon was equivalent to an African tribesman that wouldn't mean much.
>>
>>141960340
It has nothing to do with education, blacks naturally have 20-30 points less IQ.

what vn?
>>
>>141960528
99.1 isn't that bad of an average.
>>
>>141960479
Well yeah, IQ is far more closely supported by evidence to be predetermined by genetics, education is really a matter of whether or not the right environment for those genes to activate/be taken advantage of. There have been some pretty interesting studies on putting different kids from different groups and raising them in various environments with different education and the results more or less conform to global averages. Some people are just naturally "smarter" than others just like how native Kenyans always seem to be the best long distance runners and how the NBA is mostly tall African Americans.

The problem is that you get people who treat evolution as something that only occurs from the neck down and refuse to accept any evidence to the contrary, be it due to political retardation, like /pol/tards or tumbrinas or for other issues such as a fear of so called "biological determinism". Anyway, that's all I will comment on this, my post was really too off topic as it was.

My internet is fucked lads. It's been getting worse and worse for a while, but it's at the point now where I have to choose between downloading things and being able to browse the internet.

I might be changing ISP or something soon to try to get this shit sorted out. While I do that though, I will probably be without internet for 2-4 weeks.

What can I do to study during that time? Is there anything that I should download while I'm still able to?
>>
>>141963399
try swapping routers, installing a central line splitter
or even get some fixed wireless if they offer good enough plans
by fixed i mean fucking contented properly, not an overloaded mobile tower
>>
FUCK I forgot to do my reps.

>>141963399
Download everything you plan to read. Sync with Ankiweb before going offline just in case something happens. Download an offline dictionary if you don't have one. Download some old DJT threads from the archive so you can read through them and feel like you're still with us. Good luck.
>>
>>141963399
>1Mbit/sec
Nigga that's about 4 times more than the speed I download obscure Japanese shit off baidu.
Just keep that torrent running during the night and you can download whatever you want.
>>
>>141963526
I don't think it's worth forking out the money for a third-party router considering that even when my connection was at its best I was getting a sub-500kB/s download speed. I've heard that my ISP is hostile to third-party routers anyway so it might not even work if I get one.

As for a central line splitter, I think I already have one, assuming you're talking about an ADSL splitter.

>>141963643
The figure in that image is misleading. If I actually download at that speed, I cannot browse web pages at all (hence the "F" score for bufferbloat. Downloading at anything more than 0.4mb/s renders my connection unusable, and even at 0.4mb/s browsing is slow as fuck.

It is very good, yes.

Most handwriting recognition systems are very good now, but there are still exceptions.

I had been using an older Sharp Brain 電子辞書 for a while and Ioved the thing, particularly because the character recognition was amazing; I could almost think a kanji at it and it would the correct result. The backlight died about a year ago, so I decided to replace it with another Brain, this time the latest and greatest.

This was an error.

They must have completely change the algorithm because even when I write a character in perfectly, I mean worthy-of-a-calligraphy-exhibition perfect, it usually fails. Even worse, the candidate characters it produces don't even have a stroke count anywhere near the character I actually wrote.

Example: 鬱 will produce 子小卜亅厶 as candidates.

Very disappointing.

Sumi's route is glorious. The story is intelligent and detailed, built heavily into Japanese ancient folklore. The romance feels natural and smooth, like the natural development of two close friends who've been together since birth. I was dubious about the flashback scene at first, but it was especially amazingly done, providing so much depth to the characters and setting. It explores the boundaries between humans and not, about how love can overcome all else. And the ending is one of the most beautiful, heart-wrenchingly powerful things ever written.
>>
>>141969042

Yeah, EOPs in this thread are clueless about it.

Especially Alice's route is superficial at best, for example you learn more about Alice's parents in the other routes than in her base route. And in her after nothing happens, just Gokaiso-chan being super cute makes it bearable. But then you have to go to a short H scene for her story to have any sort of meaningful end.

Natsuha's normal is okay, but her after is again pretty superficial, especially after Tooru and Natsuha leave Monobeno.

Half his complaints boil down to either blaming Anki for not giving him the motivation he needs to study or blaming Anki for not being an all inclusive package.

If you lack discipline that's your fault. If you study your flash cards without drawing connections to similar flash cards (for example remembering one kanji of a compound from another word) that's your fault.

How long do you guys give yourself to answer a card in Anki?
>>

5 seconds tops, if it looks familiar and I feel that I'm about to remember the answer.
If I feel that I forgot the card completely, I press again after 3 seconds.
>>
>>141978145
If I come across a word that looks familiar but I can't quite remember it I just close the deck and reopen it, and usually the next time it comes up the answer will just pop into my head, it seems a lot more effective than just staring at the card for a minute trying to force the answer out

30 new cards included.
I always mix them into the reviews instead of doing them before or after the reviews, because this way you don't know if the next card coming up is a new card or old one.

Thanks to this, I often mis-recognize a new card as a similar looking old card, and then I instantly know that there is an interference and find the radical that differentiates them. I highly recommend doing the same instead of learning new cards at the end like a lot of people do.
>>
>>141978672

Has anyone played Moon: Remix RPG Adventure? It's probably one of the things that motivated me to start learning Japanese.
How much vocab/kanji do you think I'd need to play it? I want to be able to read it as fluently as possible so I'm saving it until my skills are good enough instead of using it for practice and learning.
>>
>>141978810
Obviously you don't get it when you know that you got to the new card section. You don't try to recognize the card, since you know it's a new item.

Heh. Althought that looks like some meta joke.
Everything after the intro is braindead easy, though.
I'd say read a long VNs and mine every word you don't know into anki, that would an overkill but pretty much guarantee you won't have any trouble with the game.

That's not the king, dude. The first 10 minutes of the game is meta as all fuck, then the kid gets sucked into the TV and the actual game world. I had no problem with the intro, because it's intentionally written like a children's game.
>>
>>141979734
You're not going to perfectly memorise it. Tae Kim's guide is an introduction to the language - just the basics to get you started. That's it.

You learn grammar by reading stuff and looking up what you don't understand. You could look it up in Tae Kim's guide, but it would be better to look it up in the DoJG.

Have you guys started using kanji passwords for everything for added security?
>>
>>141980764
Most sites don't allow that, for good reason, even in Japan. Kanji passwords would just invite shoulder surfing since you would have to select the proper kanji each time and they can't hide the password as you enter it like they normally do.

>>141979258
>>141979858
I played a few minutes of the part where you are playing the game, and it's totally a parody. I actually laughed at the backstory intro where they show increasingly larger texts full of kanji, you aren't supposed to follow that of course.

The part after the beginning, when you get sucked into the game, drops the trope-y RPG dialogue and starts using kanji (I know that just cause I watched a vid to check if it was all kana for the whole game or it had kanji later on, didn't play farther than the town after you speak to the king since it was obviously not at my level).

So back to the point, I've done 2 months of Core 6k, I can read some things, tried playing Metal Max 4 and DQVII, but I have to look up half the kanji and words every time.
I'm getting impatient to start reading actual stuff that isn't random sentences in the internet, though it feels good when I realize I can understand those with just 2 months of Anki.

I would like to get back into writing, more specifically creative writing but in Japanese. In my early 20s poetry and prose played a large role in helping me understand certain emotional and psychological aspects of my personality and life experiences by being a powerful outlet for release. As the years went by I become more and more cynical and burnt out by the whole English language creative writing publication scene, generally finding the further one became involved the more of a socio-political clusterfuck it was and so I stopped writing altogether.

There are a handful of Japanese writers and poets I would love to be able to appreciate with greater intimacy which requires a far stronger insight into the language itself. Furthermore, one day I would like to be involved in bringing more Japanese prose and poetry into the western audience. There are entire publications of contemporary works which will likely never see the light of day outside of Japan. Many Westerners could benefit from being aware that Japanese literature is not just haiku, manga and Murakami.

It revolves around a certain educational institution that secretly doubles as a research facility, populated by special students gathered from around the globe for unclear reasons.
The staff in the institution regularly have individual students go through strange procedures that would feel out of place in an educational institution.
At night you take the role of a single student who is especially good with computers, who hacks into the school infrastructure, use it to peep on the other students in embarrassing situations, and arrange even more embarrassing situations himself using the hacked infrastructure, blackmailed students and tricked facility staff.
By day you see it through the perspective of students who have to go through all that shit and try to find the hacker.
As lewdness and craziness rises every day the students start to overflow with emotions and start to awaken the abilities for which they were gathered in that facility, to unexpected results.

The students, of course, are all consenting adults, and participate in all the potentially embarrassing, traumatizing and mindbreaking events completely willingly.

I have time and I'm not really doing anything with it so I figured might as well out of pure weebness. Besides my native language(Greek), I already speak English and German. Might as well add Japanese in there at some point. Also, I've grown to rather like the language itself and it's a good way to kill time while in uni. Plus all the perks it gives me in regards to my weeb hobbies. My only real "dream" for the future is to travel and live in many different countries and places and experience different environments anyway.

well, depending on your definition...
I passed JLPT N2 in December 2014, then N1 in December 2015. J-Cat score is 305.

I have ~11k words and 2500 kanji in Anki.
>>
>>141989725
How much more difficult was N1 than N2?

Retention for Mature cards is 92.5 for vocab and 82% for Kanji (production). Those kanji review are basically half of my daily workload, and they're probably so bad because I never have to produce kanji outside of those reviews.

The only way to ever be fluent (if that is even possible) is by living in japan and interacting with the people there.
It's just impossible to get the nuances of the languages right even if you "know" all the words and grammar structures.
>>
>>141990558
Not true, you can get there by simply reading and listening a lot. It's the same.
>>
>>141989862
more details on the review times:

If I set the graph to just the last year, the average review time is 38 minutes a day.
Of those, 19 is kanji production, 12 is vocab and 8 grammar.
>>
>>141990553
~2 weeks before the N1
>>
When should I do one of those jcat tests for the first time?
>>
>>141989556
>Why there's so much reps with so little new cards?

I think, I have an explanation for that. The stats at the beginning were from the previous version of Anki. It didn't have a learning mode, so only the very first review of a card counted as "learning". Then it went into normal review mode, but the minimum interval wasn't a day, it was minutes and hours.

(That is, you learn a new card, pass it once and then it's a normal review card scheduled 10 minutes in the future, etc...)

N1 guy here. The problem with the JLPT isn't the difficulty of any single question, it's answering all the questions in a very limited time while staying focused for 3 hours with only a single break.

The listening is at the very end of the test, and other than the final 2 questions it really isn't that difficult, but if you just space out for a few seconds, you likely missed a question and that stuff adds up.

Yeah I mean I don't expect to have any trouble with time but I did notice it was extremely easy to especially miss the questions themselves or be like "wait shit did they say otoko no hito or onna no hito" if you slack for a second

Also the pauses betweent he question and the dialogue are way too long

If that video is accurate I know I can at least get 10 in a row tho

>>
>>141992116
As I said, the only kind of tricky part is the type of questions that starts at 1:30:40 in the video:
First someone explains 4 alternatives, then you get two or more people discussing those alternatives (while changing their mind a few times...), and you need to answer which option they each picked/should pick.

Everything before that is mostly a matter of staying focused. The pauses are useful for reading the next question/answers (for the parts where you have something printed)
