Friendly Reminder

How to tell if something is a shitpost:
>calls the community made guide/whatever method a piece of shit with no reasoning given why
>insults someone giving helpful advice with no reasoning given why
>attempts to create arguments over virtually nothing (eg opinions without facts)
>"spam questions" that are easily answered via a 1 second glance at the guide
>uses obtuse Japanese fragments interspersed with English to attempt bypass people trying to filter the shitposts

So I used to hook VNs with TransAggregator and ITH but I recently made a fresh install of Windows 7 and I want to transition to chiitrans. Thing is, I can't dl Atlas anymore on the fujitsu site. The only thing you can do to fight laziness is form habits and just make the rational decision to do the goddamn work! Worst case scenario, you barely do any new anki cards and have to wait years before you're good. If you learn 5 kanji-vocabulary a day, you'll know 3,000 kanji in less than 2 years, and would have barely spent time studying. Obviously this is suboptimal but you can be a lazy shit and still do it.

Another thing would be to force yourself to read manga in Japanese. That's what I'm trying to do and it's ridiculously helpful. Reading practice is the most important thing to do while learning Japanese. If you do nothing but anki for 100 years you will never learn Japanese. Try reading a single chapter or something a day and build up as time goes on.

Do *not* rely on motivation. Just make a schedule and stick with it. If you can't do that, sorry, but you really can't learn Japanese.

Learning Japanese feels good. It makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something every day. Before I was goal- and dreamless, and was basically just consuming media every day for escapism, but now I have a purpose.

My dream is to become an eroge translator in the future.
>>
>>141724147
That's what motivates me to keep going too, feels great having a goal, and feeling like you have a way to spend your time productively

I'm dabbling in doujinshi translating at the moment, feels good giving back to the community

Long enough ago that I should already know enough to do what I wanted to do with it when I set out but I've failed. On the positive side I've started up again and I'm having an easier time understanding the stuff I'm reading than In the past. So while it's still hard it's not as hard as it was. I can still learn it but is depressing thinking about all my previous failures.

Started mid-April last year. I can read a lot of Tweets, nhk easy news articles, things like Yotsuba, and I can carry on a conversation well enough. My listening is shit though. I'm not a neet unfortunately so I don't always have as much time as I want to study

I started learning Japanese because I wanted to read read untranslated doujins and watch unsubbed anime, but I don't even watch anime anymore. I just like the language. Reading and doing anki a little every day, even when I feel too tired or busy, has gotten me into good habits that go beyond studying Japanese.

What's the difference between 帰り and 帰る ?
You can't use 帰り alone in a sentence ?
Like 帰る means going home and you don't specify anything ( where/when ), meanwhile with 帰り you have to specify where/when ( after school, at 6 pm ).

More generally, how does a verbal noun work ?
>>
>>141724302
Like 4 years probably, although my level of seriousness fluctuated a lot early on

Idk about milestones, everything's so slow that I never really realise when I improve in any significant way, I guess I can read pretty much any SoL with very little difficulty, just having to look up a word or two every now and then, I can watch SoL with japanese subtitles fine but without subtitles I miss some of the faster spoken shit, my listening comprehension is miles behind my reading
>>
>>141724935
It works by READING MORE
>>
>>141724935
The masu stem of a verb just turns that verb into a noun meaning the same shit, so you can use it as you would any noun

So you can use 帰り to talk about the act of returning for example, instead of talking about actually DOING the act
>>
>>141724935
One is a verb, the other is a noun.

Speaking of which, what is everyone working on reading currently?

Are you enjoying it? Learning a lot? Would you recommend it, and if so, to what skill level?

I'm aware we have a list for this, but active discussion isn't a bad thing, either.

The more you learn japanese the less you will want to do this shit, except if you crave for the attention.

>>141724302
Started in 2011, passed N2 in 2014, failed N1 in 2015 by 10 points.
Since I finished post-grad and started working I do not have time to study properly so my overall proficiency is not increasing much, apart from my reading speed.

There's no such thing, m8. The only company I'm aware of that ever dabbled in eroge translations dropped out of the "business" in 2008 (probably because it was unprofitable as fuck).

Reading 学戦都市アスタリスク vol 5. and playing Chaos;Head on the Vita (finished Steins;Gate 0 last December so I went and bought that)

Asterisk is easy for a light novel, so if you like the anime I recommend it.

>>141725877
Alright, the translation business does not seem to pay well so I wish you good luck.

>>141725945
Just my opinion but when you can actually enjoy things in Japanese it feels like a better use of time to continue doing that instead of translating stuff for a not so good community

Started kyonyuu fantasy after the discussion in /jp/
It's not boring me but the sex scene density is a bit too high. I'll probably just read the first one and then go back to focusing on anime. I downloaded the second lupin series to watch through (in addition of course to following ~5 shows this season)

MG, JAST. Though I'm guessing 5~ years down the line there will be more companies / the Japanese trying to localize stuff themselves without a 3rd party.

Reading Tonakoi. I'm not far enough in to recommend it, but it feels harder than Satsukoi. I've been on the same scene for 3 days. I recently doubled my daily Anki time and it is really burning me out. I need to cut back again.
>>

>>
>>141724302
Started April 2012,
Passed N2 December 2014
Passed N1 December 2015

Reading VNs and LNs, playing japanese video games, no plans about going to japan, or actually interacting with japanese people.
>>
>>141726388
MG doesn't even show up on VNDB, and JAST have hardly released anything in English. I know that the Steins;Gate translation that is attributed to them was actually a fan translation that JAST bought when it was very near completion.

It's pretty stupid to bet on getting a job in such a tiny industry, especially when you have no formal qualifications related to that field and no translating experience.
>>
>>141726615
I'm not sure where you're getting 'betting' from, I just said it's a dream...

>Just my opinion but when you can actually enjoy things in Japanese it feels like a better use of time to continue doing that instead of translating stuff for a not so good community

I've been enjoying things in Japanese for a long time and continue to do so all the time, I also enjoy providing fap material for other people to enjoy and seeing their happy comments of gratitude, if I spent years learning a skill why would I not want to use it for the good of a community that I feel close to and want to give back to

This is incredibly low quality shitposting, but I'm going to respond here for other learner's reference anyways:

>>141727635
The PDF of the actual book. Reading the introduction, which explains how the method works, how the book is laid out and how to use it, is incredibly important.

It lays the out the foundation for learning using the RTK method, not just the 2000 something kanji found within RTK1, but also how to learn the 1000+ it is lacking when you encounter them "in the wild".

If you are planning on using RTK to learn, you'll need not only the anki deck but also the book (it introduces the radicals & the intro) and if you want, kanji.koohii community stories.
>>
>>141727461
You should have used a deck like https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/2077872612 that has the top 2 community stories from Kanji Koohii.

>>141727499
While I always recommend using the PDF along with the deck, it wouldn't solve this problem because he does stop having stories around 500.
>>
>>141727140

>>
>>141728268
But that isn't what I said.
>>
>>141728330
Obsessing over tests is bad, especially when they cost a decent chunk of money, give you no real benefit, and don't even test the most important parts of japanese ability for actual communication.
>>
>>141728352
Well pointless for presenting as credentials maybe, but not for judging progress I think. If you happen to live close to a test site and want to take the N5 or N4 even just to confirm the level you you already know you are, I say go for it. It's a great confidence and motivation boost.
>>
>>141728330

>>
>>141728461

>>141727976
Even if you are not applying to jobs in Japan, it is often seen as a good sign by companies.

While it's true it's easy to figure out English loanwords, producing them would be another story. Not everyone here wants to speak / type in Japanese of course, but for those who do, it's useful.

It can help to think of them as not being English words at all, since some of them do end up kind of mangled anyways.

Hanahira has no sexual content, whereas the Hanabira games do. So basically Hanahira is just a tame yuri SoL story whereas the Hanabira games are actual yuri eroge.

>do they really differ in difficulty? Because it doesn't seem like it
What exactly are you basing this on? Have you read either one?

The Hanabira game that you linked takes a Japanese person about 15 hours to read. Hanahira takes 2 hours. Hanahira is 99% voiced with about 1 line of narration in the entire game. Hanabira looks like a normal VN so it probably has tons of narration, which is harder to read most of the time, and isn't voiced. And I would bet money that at least one character in Hanabira talks like an ojousama while the characters in Hanahira talk like children.

DJT isn't a committee on forming OP images, although you wouldn't know it sometimes from looking.

I've been really proud of DJT lately for not getting pissy about people using different images, but what you're doing now is still just as bad.

Just stop putting so much importance on it. You're like those people that take a shitty "MS Paint meme" and turn it into some ebin vector art image that you can blow up to 5000x5000 to make it seem important.

Inspired by this image, I started in 2012. I've given up many times since then for various reasons. The early attempts failed because I really had no idea what I was doing or what I was even supposed to be doing, while the more recent attempts failed because I tried to rush through everything and ended up overwhelmed.

I know kana, some common kanji, basic grammar and a thousand or so words, but that's as far as I've gotten because of my ignorance and/or stupidity.

I have nothing but 4 years of failure under my belt so far, but I really want to learn this language so I keep coming back to it. This time I'm trying to learn from my mistakes and takes things more slowly. Also, for the sake of variety, I'm trying new methods - instead of Tae Kim and vocab only, I'm reading Imabi and doing RTK.

The most depressing part is that, if I hadn't been stupid and rushed, I probably wouldn't have given up before and would have gotten pretty far by now. I see your problem, aside from lack of motivation

you have the same problem I had
your entire problem is that you're not reading

just fucking read, man

stop with the tae kim and so much anki time

all of that should come second to reading

only use tae kim to briefly look up grammar in question, don't bother trying to learn grammar through tae kim that you'll just forget. skim it once in a while maybe, but nothing more than that

and even if you memorize a bunch of words by their english keyword in anki, you still don't really understand the definition without learning through context

and RTK doesn't actually teach you any vocabulary, nor do you actually need it

you should be spending four or five times the amount of time on reading over any of this other stuff

reading is the most important thing and there's no way around it

Huh? Never had this happen to me unless I don't restart the browser for like 2 weeks and let the RAM it takes up go to like 1.5gb (but I had that issue in Chrome too). Are you using some fucky broken extension / downloading a ton of stuff from MEGA and letting the RAM usage get too high?

Not sure why it acts like this. I like to think that I treat my PC well and the only extensions my Firefox installation has are Rikaichan, uBlock Origin and Greasemonkey (+ 4chanx). I've also got a ton of RAM.

It's really strange. I'll click a link or any kind of content and it'll just load infinitely before I close a tab, upon which it'll instantly load. Happens way more often if I've got a lot of webms up. Doesn't matter how long Firefox's been running.

I won't write anymore since I don't want to start full-blown tech support, though, unless someone posts a miraculous fix of some kind.

>>
>>141748836
I believe everyone has a natural retention percentage. You may be able to increase it by spending more time studying. You could write the words out, look up images on Google, look at example sentences, etc. But then that is a lot of time that could be spent learning new words instead. Learning 63% of 30 words is better than 90% of 20 words.
>>
>>141749393
What I see is people who burn out their working memory easily have extremely strong long term memories, and vice versa. I basically cannot learn information by drilling but I only have to remind myself of it like three times a month apart to know it eidetically, wheras my dad can learn new things by rote in a matter of minutes but can't remember the names of family friends that come around a lot.

>>
>>141749113
No one plans to do that many cards unless they're actually insane. Anki is just for building a foundation, after that its benefits start falling off and you might as well just be reading instead.

Also being below 95 and being below 65 are very different. Going by number of cards missed 65% is about seven times worse, which is a big deal. To put it bluntly, you're probably a fucking idiot if your retention is that low.
>>
>>141749986
423 in 46 minutes?

Try 283 cards in 93 minutes. Then again, every time I saw something interesting or wanted to get a better feel for the context, I would reread the connected sentence. Or I would sometimes look up other words in the sentence that I had forgotten. Or I would write down relearn vocab I was having extra trouble with on paper to make a list of words in particular that I struggle with, etc.

Or maybe 30 cards a day is just too much for me...
>>
>>141749755
Sounds like a shitty coincidence backed with nothing but anecdotal evidence.
I have great retention and there's nothing iffy about my long-term memory at all.
>>
>>141750450

>>
>>141750391
yeah mines at 15 new words a day which has still gradually ballooned out my reviews since i keep failing matures
my excuse is lately the words are getting very similar definitions and its hard to separate them
>>
>>141750283
or maybe that kind of retention could just be the result of not having familiarity with the kanji? did you do RTK?
>>
>>141750468
The part where you mentioned you can't learn information by drilling. Retention is literally a measure of that, if it's what you want to call working memory.
>>
>>141750517
well, my time is probably bloated because it's a pretty fresh mining deck going at a pace of 30 new cards a day

or maybe I am just stupid after all
>>
>>141750582
Drilling is sitting down and repeating the same information in one sitting. Retention isn't a measure of that at all.
>>
>>141750391
That's quite a while to be spending on Anki. If you feel like it helps you that's great, but you might be better off just memorizing the definitions and ignoring the rest so you can move through the cards quickly and spend that time on reading instead. It's really reading that will teach you the usages and common context of words, and it'll teach you better than the sample sentences in Core.
>>
>>141750738
it's a mining deck, the sentences are captured by rikaisama from reading, which is why i kind of get caught up in rereading them sometimes
>>
>>141750560
Never actually used the RTK book, but I drilled the basic radicals and did around 2 thousand recall/recognition pairs out of a kanji deck. I was trying 20 cards a day out of core2k/6k at the same time before, but it was taking too much time to do both so I prioritized kanji for a couple months. My retention in both of those decks was nearly a hundred though.

I stopped doing new cards out of the kanji deck recently and since then I've been sporadically adding new cards from the anon core 5k frequency deck. Like 100 on some days and 30 or zero on others, amounting to 1330 in the last three weeks, so that variable is probably unreliable in my case.
>>
>>141750630
Retention is by all means a measure of what you learned by drilling. If you want to talk about retention of brand new cards throughout the first sitting, Anki more or less measures that too with the blue bar.
>>
>>141750863
Oh, I see.
>>
What does machoke mean in Japanese?

Like the pokemon.

I was watching a thing where they punned off of it for strong men and I figured machoke was like a play on a Japanese word for buff dude or something.
>>
>>141751012
You seem to be making a critical assumption, anon. I didn't measure retention, and you can't go from drilling to retention in the first place because the only cards that are drilled are new ones and ones that have already been lapsed. Cards that are not new and have not been lapsed are merely reviewed. Retention is not a measure of how good you are at drilling, but a measure of how much you have to / don't have to drill. Besides, Anki doesn't even have a retention stat.
>>
>>141751235

There's no meaningful distinction between reviewing in Anki and drilling here.
Retention is a measure of what you remember, specifically from that drilling, which means it is a personal measure of the effectiveness of drilling. Anki has a plugin for it that you can assume everyone has installed.

If you want to make this distinction so badly, then what exactly is it? What constitutes drilling in the context of Japanese for you, and how would you measure its effectiveness other than retention of what you drilled? If you choose to look at "working memory" instead and only check retention immediately after a session of brand new material, your post is pretty out of context here isn't it?
You said that you are bad at drilling yet remember things you only see 3 times, and that your dad is good at rote memorization but forgets inconsequential information that shows itself fairly often. There isn't necessarily any correlation between anything in this anecdote, let alone retention, which of course you didn't mention. You did say it in response to someone talking about retention, though, which at this point is making it look like you're trying to cover your tracks.

Spend more time reading. Consider doing the DOJG anki deck.

If you do 10 a day, then you have a 3.5k vocabulary in a year which is okay.
If you do 20 a day, then you have a 7k vocabulary after a year which would be much more comfortable.

Do whatever you're comfortable with really, because in the end you want to learn a lot of words anyway so just go as fast as you can

I did 40 a day for like a month with the occasional 50. At a 90 % retention throughout reviews stayed at 200 to 250. Wasn't too bad.
>>
>>141740541
My study schedule involves 40 new words a day from the 10,000 core deck and between 25 and 40 new words from a side vocab deck from other media. It takes around an hour on average to review vocab for the day, which isn't so bad.

Depends what you mean by easy to read. If you mean a better font with clearer glyphs, install the IPA Gothic and Mincho fonts, then (in Firefox) go to:
preferences > content > look for the "fonts" section and click "advanced" > in the "Fonts for:" list, select "Japanese" > under "Serif:" select "IPAPMincho", under "Sans-serif:" select "IPAPGothic", and under "Monospace:" select either "IPA Gothic" or "IPA Mincho" depending on whether you prefer Sans or Serif fonts

If you're on Chrome then I can't help you.

What is the difference between:

and
大阪と東京は日本経済の中心地である。

I assume the とともに is more the combination of both rather than "Tokyo and Osaka"
>>
>>141762525
Oosaka, along with tokyo, are the economic centres of japan

Oosaka and tokyo are the economic centres of japan

The first one is specifically talking about Oosaka, and just mentions that Tokyo is too, while the second one is focusing on Oosaka and Tokyo equally

I guess

Osaka is, together with Tokyo, the economic heart of Japan.

So I just added recall cards to my mining deck (English, recall Japanese equivalent), and my deck is set to random new cards, as opposed to seeing them in order added. I was assuming I'd get mostly recall cards since it just doubled my deck size, but all I got were recognition cards like normal.
Is Anki set up to only see the new recognition cards first, and older recall cards later, despite it being set to random and I haven't seen the recall cards yet?

The reason I set it to random, by the way, is so that I can make a brand new deck and mine new words for it, while also working on the reviews/recall cards for the other deck.
>>
>>141765274
Go to browse, and order the list by Due.
That will tell you which order will new cards be shown. You can change the ordering with edit-reposition.

Actually I should clarify here. In general that might be the case, but with counters, eg 本、冊、匹、as well as prefixes to numbers _百、千、etc I think kun yomi (よん、よ) is not only more common but often the correct way
