Well it does make you feel awful, but KGNE makes me angry in a very unique way. Very few dramas do that. For example I feel that the drama in Nagi no Asukara is nothing compared to KGNE's level of NTR.

Obviously I'm a sucker for heart-wrenching shitty soap dramas, but it does its job very well which is why I think it was a great show, especially considering it's a VN adaptation.

Kino had great stories but the concept with the mostly observing and non-interacting MC felt too static. And the talking bike was a mood killer.
Planetes had a great first half with some delightful comical scenes, then it became overwrought hit-and-miss drama. Never saw an anime shooting itself in the foot so badly.
My vote goes to Texhnolyze. Also, 2002 > 2003.

Planetes had an atrocious start that I just can't forgive and some later drama wasn't very convincing.
Texhnolyze wasn't bad, but it definitely was pretentious in an artsy way at least a bit and hipsterish.

It was a triple tie for me between Scrapped Princess, Cromartie and Fumoffu, but taking into account the buildup of the story, the plot and the likability of the characters, I ended up with Scrapped Princess.

Cromartie was great no doubt, but it took a bit of effort to get into the zone, while Fumoffu had great highs but had some questionable moments in between (the rich kid for example).

Special mention to KGNE because I was heavily invested into it emotionally (even had usernames and such referencing it), but the ending was lacklustre, and ruined it for me overall.

I don't understand this at all, I'm with you with most of the rest of the list. But Haibane was almost painful to watch at points.

FMA really confuses me, between stuff like Planetes, Cromartie, the Animatrix, and Kino, FMA 03 stands out as easily the most disliked on /a/. It's because old FMA is one of the best shounens.

Let me get the contenders over first:
Yes, Texnolyze is good. But it's also unnecessarily edgy. Its plot and ideas could've been done in a much more different way. The whole style of the show spells out that they did it this way to be different. 7/10
Cromartie is funny and it has its moment, but it ain't anything special. 7/10
Tanabe a shit. She ruined early Planetes and later one tried too hard to be personally dramatic. 8/10
Kino is comfy, but not that great. I'd rather warch Mushihi. Lost interest before finishing it.

FMA avoids all pitfalls of a bad shounen and does a very good job at worldbuilding and creating a believable setting for the heroes to interact with and grow. But, unlike Brotherhood it doesn't shit the bed with repetitive endless fights and predictable plot elements (no, I don't care if it was in the manga, first anime had a better plot). 2003 added depth to characters and explored themes of obsession and following her. And it's not just that. The villain had a personal, but very human motivation behind herself - a very sobering simplicity. Throughout the show we got glimpses of the dark side in man and harshness of the world in way in a mature way even seinen don't always manage - and without everything getting grimdark. It's something very subtle and very, vary rare in shonen.
The first few monster of the week episodes weren't all that great, but even they were written to be relevant by the end. In Brotherhood, Lust got burned by the cool man of flames. In 2003, we got a tragic story of her interaction with her regrets from the past. For all the glory of modern budgets and animations, the old anime stands out with its atmosphere. The lightning is some of the best I've seen to this date. I first watched the original just before Brotherhood got announced, so I don't think I'm nostalgiafagging when I say old FMA is in top three shounen anime of all times.

While I largely agree with your assessment of the original FMA's strengths, you have to admit that it completely shit the bed at the end. FMA 03's a great example of a darker shounen series, whereas Brotherhood exemplifies all the aspects of a more traditional shounen series. The original FMA covered the early parts of the manga far better than Brotherhood did, due to a lack of pacing constraints that Brotherhood kind of innately had, and I think is almost unarguably superior up until the manga/TV split. This is purely opinion, but I think FMA 03's OST was consistently better, thanks largely to the fact that it was performed by the fucking Russian Symphony Orchestra, but Brotherhood definitely has its fair share of great tracks too. It sounds like something out of a movie, and really helps to keep the mood and place the late-industrial setting.

All that said, I find you taste in the other anime you listed to be shit, and while that's your opinion, I disagree immensely, especially in regards to Kino and Cromartie.
