Well he used to be friends with IV, so when IV betrayed him and injured his sister he became a loner and threw away the idea of friendship because he couldn't trust anyone.

Through his duels with Yuma he starts to slowly accept the idea of having a friend he can trust. But he isn't sold on it. How can he when he still harbors hatred towards IV as shown in the WDC.

Then he figures out that IV was being controlled and decides to fight with Yuma and Kaito for the greater good and stop Faker. He realizes what's at stake/more important at this point so it's perfectly reasonable for him to side against Faker.

Then season 2 happens and he realizes he was a Barian in past life. I agree that part wasn't handled very well as there were many things he could've done, but the fact stands he's very conflicted about it and it creates an inner turmoil. There was this group of people he was already close to at one point in his life, and he's fighting these same people so he doesn't know what to do. Eventually he decides to join them and side against Yuma and co. This is where he goes from good character to villain.

Again, the Don T curse wasn't handled well but I think the point was Shark was thrown for a loop with how he was a pawn and his anger and rage clouded his judgement and all the effort he put into his plans were wasted. So he might as well continue being an angry person who can't see reason. Thus he continues to be the villain.

In the end, Yuma reaches his heart through a duel, but the interesting part is Shark acknowledges that they can never truly understand each other and chooses Barian in the end which saddens Yuma but this is one of the rare moments of good writing in Zexal.

Then he dies and Yuma uses the Numeron Code to bring him back. I guess he realizes there's no point in fighting and they can all be friends now.

Yeah, some issues in writing but not as bad as you make it out to be. Much more interesting character than HARUTOOOOOOO.

I thought Shark was decent, but the way the forced all that flopping was irritating.

On the other hand, Kaito's characterization was perfectly consistent, and reasonable based on his circumstances. He recognized his father was a piece of shit, so he tried to take Haruto and escape, but they were captured and he was forced to do Faker's bidding. He's told that the Numbers are all evil and that collecting them will save Haruto from his "illness," so he buys into that because he has no choice. Haruto is literally the only thing he has in life, since his friend Chris abandoned him and his mother is dead or something. When Yuma shows up, he's reluctant to trust him because Yuma is a rival Numbers Hunter, and also because he was betrayed by a friend in the past. Until Yuma saves Haruto Kaito decides that he can trust Yuma, so they start working together. He realizes his wrongs and moves on with his life. He doesn't reverse his character development at all. Hell, he even shows straight up humility based on his interactions with Mizael and how he tells Yuma that he's entrusting the future to him. All that, and he still preserves his badassery and resolve.

I felt it was a contextually appropriate switch. He was already paranoid as fuck, so confirming his suspicions with Dennis only served to make his paranoia even worse.

The thing about him saving the kid is less about the kid himself and more about making him remember his reason for fighting; that is, to restore his homeland and not just be a vengeful monster who sees enemies everywhere.

Setup was a little contrived, but I think it works pretty well.
