I thought X did it pretty well. Usually the problem with edgy is that we don't get to see a normal progression of the character to where they are. Instead it's given to us defacto as the character's backstory in flashbacks or exposition or the character tells us how dark and grim he is.

Edgy is what happens when an author writes a script with darkness as the main motif without any substance to back it up and is handled badly. It's designed to cater towards angsty teens that seem to think darkness and gore are cool, usually mixing them with other tonally different lowest common denominator tropes. It's darkness for the sake of darkness and not for the sake of plot or characterization, it's when it tries really hard to appear "dark" through contrived and ineffective tragedy, violence, or evil that it's laughed off by everyone with a brain and/or that graduated middle school.

I get what you're saying about edgy series and how utterly juvenile they can be, but they should always be judged by the quality of their writing instead of criticized for the tone, and that's pretty much the only way people use the term edgy anymore. That's the kind of shit you should only expect to see on /v/.

I think part of the problem with the word "edgy" is that it's one simple word that sums up what should be a more complex and nuanced analysis. Instead of dissecting a work and going through all the reasons that they think it's attempts at seriousness fall flat, people just throw out the word "edgy" and call it a day. The result is that you end up with people who don't really know how to discern pretentious darkness from the real thing, but want to look cool by calling things out.
