This show is making me realize why I loved Attack on Titan so much. But, when Attack on Titan came out it revolutionized anime by having things like actual character death, detailed gore, and characters that were helpless in the face of an overwhelming threat. Now that Attack on Titan has already done it though, everything else feels like a cheap imitation.

They're fundamentally different. Mumei has a limit, and is probably a super controller for the T-virus, and so will eventually succumb as she loses more and more of her humanity as she uses her powers. It also explains why her hole is so small and tight - her body is only part Kabane. All the ribbon does is staunch blood flow, so she doesn't go full Kabane.

Meanwhile, Ikoma has no limit because his body is fully Kabane, and his brain fully untouched by the virus.

The blood drinking scene from the perspective of the hole in the train ceiling is pretty retarded in context since they could just get blood from their friends or go fight their way through the train instead of on the top (especially since the hole to enter didn't exist at the time they made the decision and there's no reason to believe the passengers would let them inside) but damn if it doesn't look nice.

I love the art style in this show. Seems like the budget is falling off quite a bit though and I agree this episode was pretty shit.

how would the physics of that work when steam is the propellant? I don't know enough about real guns so correct me if i'm wrong, but with real guns the reason a higher caliber kicks harder is because there is physically more propellant exploding in the chamber.

but if your gun is launching the projectile by pressurized steam, wouldn't you effectively be able to set the 'kick' to whatever you want (up until the point that the device simply can't take and more pressure and explodes). so wouldn't the bushi's steam guns already be firing their projectiles with the maximum force the tech can generate, same as mumei's, regardless of the size of the projectile?

The point is that if you use a larger projectile, to get the same penetrative power you have to use more propellant, which increases recoil proportionally.

You can't just replace ammo with a larger variant and hope it'll do better. That'd reduce the velocity of the bullet, and thus would be even less effective. Now, if you can handle the recoil (Kabaneri super strength), you can stuff the thing full of propellant with larger ammunition, for both more killing power (smaller bullets may penetrate better, but they cause less damage), and more penetration. Basically, it means instead of having to shoot their cages several times to even kill a single one, they'd only need to shoot it once or twice.

The issue of intelligence is questionable.
It seems to be implied that they can only perform human-like tasks by imitating humans. If that grande habanero learned to sword-fight by imitating a human, it's not an impossible to stretch to say that the ones operating the train in episode 1 were just imitating the former crew.
We've already seen that habanero trains are largely immune to de-railing, so operating them could just be a matter of keeping the firebox stoked.

You know I am kind of liking this show but I really can't help but feel like this is a blender of "everything that is popular in other shows" with the sole unique exception being that it's set on a moving train. It's like they tossed a bunch of other show concepts in a blender and then came up with this. Actually this is similar to how I felt with Guilty Crown and Valvrave as well but this one in particular feels really like "okay I just saw this".
