Which cards do you all use with the DoJG deck?

I've been using the cloze ones so far and treating the deck basically like Core but for grammar, but I'm starting to have second thoughts about continuing to do so. It's pretty easy to mix up similar concepts based on the short usage descriptions, and another problem is that once you've seen a key sentence a few times, you remember what the missing part is rendering the cloze deletion pointless.

I'm starting to think a more effective use of the deck might be as follows:
>use the recognition cards
>first time you see a card, read everything on it
>hit "good" once you've read everything, and hit "good" again when it re-appears 10 minutes later (optionally re-reading all or part of the card if you feel you need to)
>when you see the card again in your reviews, read the key sentences, example sentences and formation tables
>if you feel that your understanding of the concept is still pretty weak, read the notes too and then hit "hard"
>if you feel that your understanding of the concept is fairly good, hit "good"
>if you feel that the concept is very familiar to you, hit "easy"

By doing this, you will be using the deck to review material at varying intervals, rather than treating the cards as something to get right or wrong like you would with vocab cards. Given how little information vocab cards contain, and how much information the DoJG cards contain, I don't think it's particularly logical to approach them both the exact same way (especially when, while you may be able to recall the answer to a cloze card based on the usage description, your understanding of that particular concept may actually be very weak in practice).

Thoughts?

I tried to do the immersion method with reading manga, but I found that because I'm fluent in speaking, I never learned anything because I could just guess what the kanji meant without actually learning anything.

"The republican committee chair, trump has a unobstructed path to the presidential candidacy, facing the nov main election he will be 党の結束を訴えました"

What is the proper term for 党の結束 and what is 訴えました in this context?
>>
>>141065558
I would say it's using a double negative nominalizer to carry the meaning of 委員会.
The proper term form 党の結束 is 党の結束.
訴えました here means he is ready to start a war.

>>
>>141070212
Having English on the front is certainly a good idea. Because every English word has a corresponding word in Japanese. And it doesn't increase the time you are wasting on doing anki.
I see, I will make some production cards right now, thanks.

>>
>>141070242
You read things where you know enough of the words that you aren't completely lost on the words you don't know.

If there is a sentence with only a single word you don't know, and you know all the grammar, you should really be able to at least understand that one word with the help of rikai chan
>>
>>141070264
Right, so when are production decks useful exactly?

Or, like I said, is just understanding the gist of a sentence enough for you? I'm sure nuance will come in time with enough compelling content like Love Live and seiyuu radio shows.
>>
>>141069751
>this thread loves to occasionally circlejerk over spending three hours learning 70 new cards for the day.
I learned the hard way not to do that during my first serious attempt at learning Japanese (I made a few brief attempts before it, but never got anywhere during those because I didn't have any idea what I was supposed to be doing, what resources to use and so on).

I started off doing 100 cards a day of the Core 6K deck, and by the end of the first week I was failing almost 50% of my cards and spending ~3 hours a day on reviews. It was fucking awful. I turned off new cards for a few days after realising my mistake, but by that point I was still swamped, as a complete beginner, with the amount of cards that someone going at the pace of 20 cards a day would've only accumulated after a month or so.

After a few days my reviews seemed to be getting back under control, so I enabled new cards again at a pace of 20 cards a day and managed to trudge on for another 2 months like that, but the damage was done. My retention rate was horrible (70%-75%) which just made my reviews slow, miserable and disheartening. In the end my willpower ran out and I gave up.

>so when are production decks useful exactly?
For learning how to write kanji.
How can you hope to understand the 'nuance' by having an English translation on the front? You learn the nuance by encountering a word in a lot different contexts, not by guessing the right word based on your English definition 500 times.
>compelling content like Love Live and seiyuu radio shows
I don't engage in using shitty memes and watching shitty content so I wouldn't know. But you should make some production decks for your favorite anime, I'm sure that will help you understand it better.
>>

They are shitposters. Don't bother even replying to them.

If you are doing well with Core2k, just keep going. Some people need to do a kanji deck and some don't. If you start hitting a brick wall in Core, then maybe you need to study the kanji separately.

You'll never be Japanese. Every time you look at an apple, your brain will think "apple". But forcing yourself to recall "リンゴ" as soon as you see the word apple is definitely preferable to wasting time trying to think of what word in some shit example sentence must mean in English.

Unless you've somehow become so Japanese that no one even compliments you on how good you are at using chopsticks anymore, I mean.

Nice to see that he doesn't turn into a complete dumbass when the topic turns to politics.

Don't try to tell people about the end result of the language learning process when you're still just a beginner yourself.

When your brain is really in a Japanese mode from lots of reading and listening, and a particular word or phrase has become so effortless to you that you can just spit it out at a nanosecond's notice, you'll sometimes find yourself thinking in Japanese rather than English.

I haven't really spoken Japanese to other people (unless you want to count typing), but I'll sometimes roleplay with myself or force myself to reorder my thoughts in Japanese. I find that this change is especially likely to happen around the time that I do that. For foreigners actually living in Japan (those who haven't secluded themselves in their gaijin communities, anyways), I'd imagine that this is the norm.

Delete the notes. The notes are the individual card data. Card templates can be shared between decks, notes cannot.

Deleting notes will automatically destroy the data's instantiated cards and their scheduling. If it doesn't, anki is restoring it from somewhere.

Fucking stop then, why did you post this you piece of shit?
>>
>>141072747
I'm guessing there's no easy way of converting an .apkg to .txt.

I just CTRL+F'd through the manual for "txt" and came across this in the "Backups" section:
>Anki also logs deleted notes to a text file called deleted.txt in your profile folder. These notes are in a text format that can be read by File>Import, though please note the import feature only supports a single note type at one time, so if you have deleted notes from different note types, you’ll need to split the file into separate files for each note type first.

It sounds like, by blanking this file, I might be able to stop the import function from recovering my stats, but I'm a bit wary of trying it in case it fucks something up.
>>
>>141072829
You convert an apkg to txt by importing the apkg then exporting it to txt.

Personally, I think Anki is for utter retards, this is because I, a true Japanese-learner (black belt, 5th-dan) can hear a word and from the formation of the lips know exactly what the kanji looks like as well as stroke order and all possible readings, all simply by watching anime. It must be hard to be a baka gaijin (that's stupid american, I know it's hard to follow)

I have come to a conclusion. Memorizing random word translations like 5000 core didn't help, but neither did trying to assimilate japanese by manga, because I dont read enough. But, what worked best for me, would be making my own cards with an example sentence, and seeing if I knew the meaning of it. Thats how I learned words in a faster rate of time looking back.

It's like the opposite of those stereotypical American characters in anime that only speaks a couple of words in English in every sentence.
>>
Okay, Ive been triggered too much. Of course your English has to be an elite level. Why would a company hire you if your English is as good as the average nipponjin? As a matter of fact, why should they hire you if your English is just average? Anyway, Ive only considered being a translator for a month or so of my life, but the first thing I did was learn all the grammar rules and vocab. Learn how to identify every part of the sentence: the preposition, verb type, subject, etc. Next, would be able to correct sentences. This is hard to get material for, and the only thing I had to study was the grammar section of the SAT. Because, if you look up example sentences with errors online, its a bunch of beginner ESL-level mistakes. So, the SAT grammar section was the hardest ones I could find. Next would be studying vocab, which i think the best way is through ankii, desu. Learning to write effectively is important, and really puts your grammar rules to the test. Can you write academic level shit? Idk how, but look into sentence expansion, because that trains you to write more clear. After that, just read read read. read a bunch of English, and lots of japanese.

Don't be a casual about it you fucking weeb.

Listen up pleb. genki is literally what every beginner japanese class uses, and japanese classes are slow af. Also, there comes a point in japanese learning, where you have to learn stuff via just reading the source material, and no textbook can help.

Literally, all of what genki teaches you is summarized in these two links
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/JLPT_Guide/JLPT_N5_Grammar
https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/JLPT_Guide/JLPT_N4_Grammar

So no need to toss around your buzzwords here; thinking a bunch of random 25 year olds on an imageboard are going to view you as hot shit.

first off, when did some of you start skipping days? not counting days you were forced to.
I'm well into my 5th or 6th i think. and i think i'm doing pretty good.
should i do more than 20 each day?
is there a better or similar way for grammar?
whenever i had free time, i just made a custom study to review everything i went through so far.
i also added decks for hiragana adn katakana.
so far i can say only nu and me in hiragana give me problems, as for katakana i still have some problems here and there.
added a deck for the SATs. just to improve my vocab count.
its taking me an hour everyday to finish everything.
and about the tae kim grammar, has someone made a "cheat sheet" of the sorts, where the rules are the only thing there?
i've started reading tae kim on 3rd day, and read only to the past tense and negative past for the verb.
how should i go on about going through tae kim?
what i'm doing now is just reading through it. but i have no efficient way to revise anything in it at all.

would love any kind of help i get, and also please answer atleast the first. i'm going strong now, but i don't know whether i'll keep my enthusiasm for long.
and no i'm not going to stop now because i started doubting myself.
i also got duolingo and started french and german.

>>
>>141083215
yeah that isn't particularly something that applies to japanese only.
i think i mentioned i know multiple languages and most countries that produce media tend to use their own slang rather than the standard form of their language since the target audience isn't the west, rather it's the japanese themselves.
other things to account for are accents and inner trends.
the closest example i think anyone could relate to is the difference between american and british and scottish.
>>
>>141082927
I figured that out already.
What I meant is, should I memorize through the Core deck first? How should I tackle RTK? Especially its Anki deck? The RTK deck shows you the english representation. Am I supposed to guess the kanji and the story they've given it?
How do you use them?
>>
>>141083769
You don't, RTK is a meme.
>>
>>141083769
You're supposed to write the kanji for that keyword by remembering whatever story you chose or made up. Did you read the RTK introduction?
I did RTK before starting Core. The main benefit of RTK (besides learning how to write) is that it makes it easier to recognize and distinguish kanji when learning vocab.

I don't need "motivation", it is "just" another language. I enjoy learning languages, always have done, always will do. I started learning Japanese as an extension of my hobby. Asking "what motivates you to learn it?", is like asking a WoWfag "what motivates you to learn raids?", answer is simple, they enjoy it, same applies here (for me anyway).

Also remember that the people who laugh at your efforts, telling you that it is a useless skill and you don't need it, are the same people who in school would ask their match teacher "why do we need to know this? It's not like we'll ever use it again". Unambitious people who have decided before hand to not want to expand their horizon and hence have no need of any knowledge outside of their little bubbleworld. It is not that they won't ever need that (math) knowledge, it is that they have decided to never put themseleves in a position where they might need. It is like being in a massive house with hundreds of locked doors, and instead of trying to acquire the keys to all those locked doors to see what is hidden behind them, you sit down and go to yourself "I am satisfied with the room I am in right now".

Learning Japanese opens a whole new world, both on the internet as IRL, if your curiosity to explore that world isn't enough, then I do not understand you as a person on a fundamental level.

My "main" languages would be French and English, I have no preference for one over the other, it is what we speak at home.

I have been to Denmark 5 times, I do not speak the language, but I can usually understand what a conversation is about, it shares a lot with the German/Dutch language.

As for order of ease, hmm, tricky one. I would say technically English/Dutch are the hardest due to their highly irregular nature, but then English being spoken the world over it is arguably one of the easier languages to learn in the West because of the high level of exposure. Then there is a language like German, which I personally find a lot more "strict and formal", mistakes tend to stand out more, on the other hand, if you stick to the "strict rules" you are generally good to go.
Assuming the question is coming from a person from the west I would probably order them as followed (this is based purely on spoken, so you can disregard kanji which adds a whole level of difficulty for people from the west)

Dutch
Japanese
German
Spanish
French
English

This really quite arbitrary though. I am not a teacher of any of these languages, and I am not that familiar with common pitfalls for foreigners as, aside from Spanish and Japanese, I learned the languages from birth.

I should probably add that if you add in writing/reading Japanese jumps to place no1, if only because of the time consuming process of learning kanji, a system we haven't grown up with.

If you stick to purely hiragana/katakana and furigana then it isn't even that hard, since they are just a handful of symbols for sounds we are for the most part familiar with. Once you know the symbols it would be a case of "just" learning the vocab as you would in any other language. Sadly a lot of written Japanese is in kanji and in most settings they do not come with furigana, so you have no real choice than just sitting yo ass down and memorizing. Of course this begs the question of "is it difficult or time consuming?" to which I really don't have an answer, this is most likely highly personnel. Personally I don't find learning kanji particularly hard, I just find it time consuming due to the sheer amount of information.

Reading this post give me the impression that you don't have enough experience with Japanese desu

The fact that Japanese evolved around kanji definitely makes Japanese harder, but the kanji themselves make it easier. If you cut out the ~3000 kanji it would make a lot more than 3000 words much more difficult to learn.

Just think of latin/greek roots. Sure if English didn't develop around them and we all used terms like "study of rocks" or "study of snakes and things" instead of geology and herpetology then it would be a lot easier, but given that the words geology and herpetology exist and are used, it's a hell of a lot easier if you know what "ology" means.

from all the time i spent on languages, i can confidently say that unlike anything else. language learning is not difficult at all,
it's only time consuming.
the only thing you have to watch out for is irregularities of which them selves become just a matter of time consumption since it would depend on the frequency of usage.

and reading your post you give me the impression that you don't have enough experience with English desu.

Nowhere do I even hint at cutting out kanji, where you get this absurd idea from is beyond me. I said it would be easy enough if everything was in hirigana/katakana and came with furigana, but it isn't and it doesn't. You either know the kanji symbol, or you don't, and there are a lot of them to know.

You could learn to speak Japanese at a good conversational level. Then you could learn the hiragana and katakana, but you still wouldn't be able to read Japanese because you will run into the massive obstacle of not being able to decipher the boatload of kanji.

To give an example of what I mean, you might know the word "ikimasu", you know what it means, you know what it sounds like, you can use it in a conversation. Then you might go read a book and encounter the word "行きます", but because you don't into kanji the word means nothing to you, despite you "actually" knowing the word. If it came with the furigana " いきます" you are good to go, the word is now readable to you, bravo. Alas, in most settings words don't come with furigana, you need to know the kanji and exactly here lies a large part of the difficulty in learning Moon.

I talk with Japanese learners frequently and the most common language crime I notice is when they don't try to pronounce katakana words like Japanese do, and instead half ass it by doing something that just sounds like the English word said in a bad Japanese accent.

So all of you, please don't do that. Learn to pronounce gairaigo properly just like you would learn any other word.
>>
>>141089373
Ok, my point basically boils down to the following.

If everything in Japan came with furigana it would be a lot easier. Furigana is a learning aid designed to make kanji easier, saying that furigana doesn't make things easier just doesn't make sense. However most text in Japan doesn't come with furigana so you have to learn the kanji, which can be hard.

If I had to give an example in English of what I mean, it would be something like words such as "Edinburgh", "miscellaneous" etc.. A foreigner is most likely going to be familiar with the spoken word, but when seeing it written in a way that no way resembles the word he or she is familiar with it makes shit hard.

However saying "drop all kanji" would be like saying "write everything in phonetics". Which is absolutely not what I mean.

Learning kanji is what makes Japanese hard, knowing Kanji is what makes Japanese "easy", because as you said, it is comparable to how we have groups of words with a common root and knowing the root helps you understand the language.

In short what I said was that the Japanese language would be cool and all if it had developed purely around kana, but since it hasn't and kanji is what it developed around instead, you need to learn kanji.

So when I said
>>141085593
>If you stick to purely hiragana/katakana and furigana then it isn't even that hard.
My point was that this isn't possible, you can't stick to purely kana.

One way or the other, that isn't the only difference in the pronunciation. Being a German living in America, I pronounce it the German way, not the retarded loanword way.

That being said, I reckon you'd have a bigger problem getting away with that in Japan, since they don't slightly alter the pronunciation, they completely butcher it. Engrish is a language of its own. They take English and turn into something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_36iNzrEn0 that is what English is to a japanese person, so all their English loanwords sound like that.
