I did a quick google search for "freshwater fish mercury", and the results seem to indicate that the mercury content is higher in freshwater fish than in saltwater fish, but I didn't actually read any of the pages that came up so I can't say for sure.

The main factor though, as I understand it, is how far up the foodchain a particular fish is. Things like sharks and swordfish have very high amounts of mercury.

and like i said, wasnt the first time this happened, why bother signing up for a school when they cant even be bothered to be around during their own office hours? pretty much all you need to see is nobody there, and how shitty its being handled on a daily basis to know its not going to be a good school

Take this from someone probably a bit more experienced. I'm at around 8000 words. Learn them in Kanji anyway. Just because they are "usually kana" doesn't mean they always are. It only takes that one time and you have to go back and learn it anyway. Especially if they are common words, you will probably see them in Kanji anyway. Take 是非 for example. Or even 無い.

The sentences there should provide some visual stimulus when recalling the words. From memory they were illustrative enough.
下り - descending, downhill - opposite of 上り, ascent, uphill
下がる - to lower/drop, like a fever - opposite of 上がる, to increase/go up
下る - coming down and away from some location, like a 笹舟 racing down a stream
下ろす - pull/take something down from a place, like taking a box from the top of a closet and putting it on the ground.
下りる - to alight from something or get off something, like getting off a bus or a horse.
下げる - you should know this one. "sage". The act of lowering something.

They become easier the more words you know with those kanji, or if you study those kanji individually as well. At some point later you are going to come across words like 上・かみ、上下・じょうげ、上下になる・うえしたになる、下・しも、etc. and by that time you'll probably no longer be having problems with the words you cited.

You gotta just find something that actually interests you.
If you're not confident enough in your Japanese to read anything that interests you then you either need to get more confidence or spent more time on Tae Kim.

"Guh....Why do I also feel so powerless? What's next, placing trust in money!? I get money
once a week"

Is this sort of accurate or do i need to go back to the drawing board?

Do what you want.

If you try and read shit you don't like you will be bored as fuck. I played rpgs when I was starting out. Some of my best reading was in SMTIV final recently. I couldn't stop playing it and the angels and demons use a bunch of weird terms. Yet I would easily play that over some yurishit just because the yurishit is more "beginner" and "easier". It's not actually easy if it's boring as fuck.

>>
>>141024169
Baseless conjecture. There are surely some who do it for attention, but it's utterly retarded to assume that's the only motivation they could possibly have.

>>141024162's reason is perfectly valid. Often in discussions on 4chan people will assume a lot of posts are coming from the same person when they aren't, and try to argue with people about things they never said. Using a trip reduces the confusion.

Another potential reason is just to piss off butthurt autists such as yourself after seeing how you'll go into fits of rage just from seeing a pseudorandom sequence of alphanumeric characters in place of Anonymous in one post.
>>
>>141024617
I admit I would like more attention than a random anon, but I'm not attention whoring. I don't want everyone to talk to me or anything of that nature.

I'm relatively new to studying and usually have around 70%~ correct in anki, sometimes lower. Today I had 140 reviews + 30 new cards, and after the reviews I had 91% correct, after the new cards 79%. This made me really happy and gave a feel of accomplishment, actually seeing myself progress.

Out of curiosity, when you guys started off reading Manga did you keep the English version if there was one as well to refer to? I can see benefits to both.

I've only read K-on and Yuru yuri and it was nice how easy it was to check the meaning of a sentence if you're completely stuck due to grammar or slang but I found myself relying on the crutch too much.

The latter volumes of yuru yuri are mostly untranslated and although I progressed slower (no shit) and getting stuck for a while sucked I felt it sunk in a lot better in the long run. Anyways what do you guys prefer?

then put the new ones on last once you get through it. I usually don't do new ones at the same time as I find it easier to do them on their own

Something I've become a bit curious about lately, but generally did the words/pronunciations come about first, and then the kanji were assigned to "fit" the word that already existed? Or were the words assembled based on the meanings of the kanji and their pronunciations based on the kanji used?
>>
>>141041558
>40-50%.
Honestly, what's the point of doing it at that rate?

It's clearly not working and it's going to consume all your time trying to do those reviews.
>>
>>141041871
Japanese didn't exist as a written language until the Chinese came along and gave them Kanji.

Pronunciation of words is partly based on the Chinese readings of the Kanji, also known as 音読み, as opposed to the native readings, 訓読み
>>
>>141041989
Huh ok, so did they change the pronunciation of a bunch of words to fit the writing system then?
>>
>>141042004
>so did they change the pronunciation of a bunch of words to fit the writing system then
I'm not sure what you're on about. Most Kanji have multiple readings and are often read differently depending on the word they are in or whether they are used in conjunction with another Kanji or used as a single word.

take 水 for example

水 is read as みず

下水 is read as げすい, 水 is read as すい here

Not to mention that pronunciation and readings changed a lot over the course of history.

>I'm not sure what you're on about.
Was just kind of wondering whether the readings were taken from words that use the kanji, or whether the pronunciation of the words was taken from the reading of the kanji used to form it. Sorry if it was kind of a dumb thing to ask.

Try using the Dictionary of Japanese Grammar, Basic version, and look them up. You could always benefit from using the DoJG anki deck as well. They go into reasonable depth with many examples. Late reply, but that was not a dumb question. I am not an etymologist but the basic answer is, both. Native Japanese words were affixed kanji that fit the meaning even though that kanji's pronunciation in Chinese was completely different, and also they imported a metric shitton of loanwords, utilizing (a bastardized version of the) original Chinese pronunciation.

I dident get his point, can someone help out.

改めて、うんこについて考えてみたいと思う。うんことは、ただの排泄物ではない。うんこはあらゆるものを凝縮した、完全なる状態を指す。うんこをさらにうんこな感じにすることはできないし、うんこをうんこ以下にすることもできない。いわば、不可侵な状態が完成してしまっているのだ。

"I want to think about poo again. Poo is not just waste excrement. Poo everything condensed, pointing at a completed state. Its not poo, or additionally poolike things, there is nothing lower than poo. If I were to say, a uncrossable line has been crossed"

I've heard this expression 「見せてあげる」 and I know it means "I'll show you", or at least it does in the context that I hear it, but now that I think about it, what the fuck is あげる doing there?

Would it be "to do for (the sake of someone else)"? That would make the sentence more of a kindness instead of cockiness though, wouldn't it?

But did I get the meaning right? Because god knows あげる has 203 meanings.

For instance, it could be "to give (an example)" so they are saying they would show with an example? Or it could be just a plain simple polite "to give" or even fucking deep frying.

It's ok to cut all the other meanings off. You now know that it has a bunch of other meanings, so if you read something where a not so common meaning comes up, it's usually easy to tell by the context what the word means.

If you're listening to stuff that uses あげる ambiguously then you're either already in over your head or you're already capable of discerning the difference.
