But there are a number of things that allow, say, a Ticonderoga to get away with a third of the crew a similarly-sized Washington Treaty heavy cruiser. A big part of that is the centralization and efficiency of the CIC-centric design, which is absent. Another is that the gas turbine engines it uses are much less labor-intensive than oil-fired steam boilers, and of course that the VLS system requires basically no crew to use (at least in combat).

It's like they built a WWII destroyer up with enough modern tech to get the crew size down to thirty, then gimped it's performance back down to WWII levels.

It's the first real training session. They learn how to aim and fire a torp, they learn how to drop a depth charge on a target, and they learn how everything works at sea as a warmup to get them out of the classroom mindset.

But as a crew, the main part of training would be maneuvering, mock damage control, and of course gunnery trials. It's the simplest training possible for a destroyer crew to learn synergy. The basic stuff is just a taste of how to operate before training ramps up on those topics.

Eh. The depth charge not causing damage was a little out there, but it is a training charge after all. The sub had to surface post detonation, so it did cripple it.

The sub wouldn't surface because of the paravene. It still has another propellor and the cable would either break on the paravene or the cable would be cut by the destroyer. You don't emergency surface next to a ship that just dropped an explosive on your head. It would be better to run quiet and hope they assumed you were destroyed.

Paravenes were used for mines mainly but because of the wing design pulling it fucking everywhere laterally, they used to clank off of the submarines they were chasing so close to their original minefield clearing duties. Then they started dropping them for subs, cables getting caught in the propellor of the sub during a turn giving slack to the cable happened a number of times, and then someone made an explosive paravene for just subs.

So the more non realistic aspect was the sub not having a catastrophic structural collapse.

Nevertheless, the Harekaze would be legendary from what she's been able to do. Leaving the LCS kill aside, that destroyer has made two crippling blows in the matter of one sortie, both against all odds, and both while the ship's already gotten damaged in battle.

If Captain Mike could do this in simulation at any naval academy, she would an all-time record anywhere; if Captain Mike did this as a commissioned officer, then she's in line for promotion to a command a major surface combatant or to lead a destroyer flotilla. As I said I don't know shit but I still find it hard to believe that the hetzer's front could hold back 90+ tons, or even manage to wedge itself under that much weight in the first place. If I am wrong I would be interested in the specifics of why. It seems to me even if that weight could not flatten the armor itself it would still be enough weight to crunch whatever was holding it up.

I remember one of the many flaws of the Maus being that it could not traverse many bridges due to its weight, so if a tank destroyer could really hold even half of that shit up, I would be very impressed.

Gun autist and the conspiracy girl disabled a modern battleship with a single shot, perfectly hitting the only spot they could to accomplish that. And they did it with standard rounds, common HE with a pigsteel ballistic cap along with the delayed impact fuse being set perfectly.
