To be honest, GTO was the dubbed version that we watched along with my brother. She's fairly open about it, movie wise she also watched the GitS movies and Hosoda stuff.
Also, GTO is definitely entry-level. Sure Onizuka bring up stuff like Kamen Rider and Eva, but overall you can watch/read the whole thing without much knowledge of otaku culture.

Good stuff knows that troupes and cliches exist for a reason and uses them properly to build a fun story. Forced animation is when an anime tries to make up for the fact that it's story is lacking by heavily focusing on making the animation the best.

Years ago, all video tapes were sold at prices similar to the ones Japan charges for BDs. They were designed to be sold to video rental stores, who would then market it to the consumer (similar to the way streaming services do today).

That model never really worked that well, and so in most of the world, disks are marked-down to be sold to the general public. Even if it means making less up front, a larger audience means more people buying merchandise and tie-ins.

In Japan, however, something stupid happened. Otaku started buying the tapes priced for stores. Anime didn't have to be sold to the general public, because a tiny slice of otaku were willing to throw absurd amounts of money at it. And so it was never marketed to the public.

Manga is universally popular in Japan. LNs are very popular. But anime has remained a niche industry in the minds of many (including many who produce it), because they still cling to the idea of that tiny slice of otaku with inexplicably large wallets.

Anime movies do well at the box office. Anime swag sells well. Anime is a staple of Japanese television. But many, many people in the industry still feel compelled to cater to the otaku niche, and they've so ignored the larger market that they're blind to it.

Anime began in 1963, and revolved almost entirely around television. Home video started coming into use in the early 80s. Even then, OVA anime was just one segment of the anime market. It didn't replace television and movie anime. Late night anime started emerging in the late 90s and eventually absorbed OVAs almost entirely, but daytime anime is still here and there's a lot of late night anime that's perfectly fine for "normal" viewers. It's just that relatively few people watch late night anime regardless of what its content is, and fewer still will financially support it.

Daytime anime is an option, but the network will want something that pulls in a lot of viewers and preferably lasts longer than one or two seasons. That is actually very limiting. With late night anime you can just buy a timeslot for a limited time and basically air whatever you want.

Anidb lists 26 "shounen" anime that started in 2015, and 27 that started in 2009. There are probably a number of originals or LN adaptations in there, because Anidb is sort of shit about that (still better than MAL), but that should hold for both years, so they're still roughly comparable.

In order to pander, you have to avoid taking risks with regards to the content of your properties. Fewer risks taken means that fewer series's that are somewhat interesting end up being produced.

日本の文化やマナーなどを何年間かけて勉強・体験して慣れてるからそんなストレートに聞かないし、日本人を困らせるような態度・言葉など取らない。勿論仕事場だと仕事中に聞く訳ない（休憩中の時とか帰りの時とかに限る）。一緒に遊んでる時とか友達のお家にいるとかのシチュエーションでもさりげなく聞く。なのによく友達が話を逸らす。その中にカラオケですっごい渋いアニメの曲知ってる友達がいるのに。

これって/a/nonがいつもやってる猫被りかなーと最初思った。単なる日本人の友達が自分のサブカルチャー（アニメ・漫画）に恥を感じてる気がする。

ただ一緒にアニメや漫画で話をしたいのになぁ。
