I set it to 35 new cards a day and unlimited reviews (999). Studied for 19 days
I can keep up with it for the most part, except those mentioned. Its easier than when I studied English because Japanese is pretty similar to my native language which is Vietnamese (they both originated from Chinese)
>>
>>140616332
>not vertical text

Gross
>>
>>140616891
Why do you think that?
>>
>>140617012
For one-three liners like in VNs, horizontal is fine, but, for large bodies of text, Japanese is more aesthetically pleasing in vertical form.
>>
>>140617232
>meikyuu.exe

Pretty sure that is a VN, bub.
>>
>>140616507
>unlimited reviews (999).
That's not unlimited.

>>140616268
I change what I do depending on what my motivation is and how much time I have. Today I did 25 new cards. Yesterday 50. The day before 25 and the day before 0. Sometimes I don't do new cards for some days and then I do 100 (mining). Just do what you think works best for you.
Started really like 8 months really again and on new year I restarted Anki for some reasons. Got 1200 mature and 1900 young but some of the cards I learned before I didn't l didn't unsuspend yet because I'm most of the time mining stuff.
Settings: New cards 1 2 7 30 45 300 180, order is random, starting ease 220%, max rev/day 9999, easy bonus 150%, interval mod 60%, mark only[/blog]
Anyone else changed his interval mod?
>>
>>140616507
>>140617291
Meant 9999, missing a 9
>>
>>140617232
Nonetheless, Japanese themselves are fine with large blocks of horisontal text.

How can you remember 35 or more cards for a day?
If it set anything higher than 30 I end up rushing to clear my deck as soon as possible..
What is your trick?
>>
>>140617492
I do 50 new cards a day. I do them in intervals, so I'll study for 10-15 minutes or however long I feel like before retiring cards for the day, take a break for some amount of time, then come back and see how well I remember what I've already looked through and continue the cycle
>>
>>140617492
I can translate words made up of Kanji character into Chinese and then into Vietnamese, and a lot of them will still make sense, so it's easier for me, Don't know about others though
>>
>>140617492
I do the same as >>140617626
I also do reviews for 15-20 minutes. After 20 I start to lose focus so I make a break and then continue. In the evening I do reviews for 5-10 minutes. Morning works better for me. Also when I do a lot of reviews like mining 100 cards I write them down an review them. I did like 500~ cards in a week some weeks ago and wrote each one at this time on a paper with translation and read them when I had time. Like a book. When I would finish I'd start again.
But I also do sometimes for some days only 10 words a day. If you don't feel like doing much, do less.
>>140617645
I also look up every word before in Jisho or some other dictionary and then translate it into my language. I don't live in my homecountry but it's still easier to memorize words in one's native language I think

Seems like it depends. That someone felt they had to ask the question to begin with is perhaps evidence that natives don't care much.
>>

Vertical text is easier to read for Japanese.

I don't really feel the need to. I don't mind if people disagree. I just wanted to point out the two links you provided are not really substantial or notable evidence. If you want to prove it, which you seem to, you'll have to do better than that.
>>
>>140620743
>I don't really feel the need to

Neither do I. Vertical text being easier to read than horizontal text if only because a page of vertical text contains less text than a page of horizontal text is enough evidence. Furthermore, every single article I've read so far about horizontal vs vertical text has stated that reading vertical text feels more natural for native readers than reading horizontal text, be it because of early manga influences in life, the fact that the vast majority of manga and novels are printed with vertical text or any other reasons.

The only exception to this are otaku who spend more time on the Internet where text is displayed horizontally.

Well, posting sources to try and prove it doesn't really give off that impression.
And, the fact you continue to give meaningless anecdotal evidence from largely outsources, unscientific articles on the internet, even after having their irrelevance pointed out, is a bit perplexing.
If you want to prove it, or have someone like me, agree, then provide a scientific sourced article. If you don't want to prove it, then why keep posting? If you reply again just to argue with me and not to provide any sources I'm going to ignore you.

Can someone help me figure the sentence below?

> あんだけ女とっかえひっかえしてたクセに急に純愛ぶって
I have no clue what 女とっかえひっかえしてた is.

And the tiny part in the last panel:
> アイツのまわり
> ビッ4ばっかり (???)
> だしー

The context is that there's a guy who used to hang around women a lot (or women hanged around him) and he suddenly stopped because of light-hair character in the pic.
>>

とっかえひっかえ is a phrase

Learned the kana over five years ago and didn't do anything with it. Around two years ago I had a crack at "proper study", which involved home made paper flash cards, huge amounts of drilling shit which I ended up forgetting within a few days, and basically a lot of looking for resources from the local public library due to not having an Internet connection at the time. That was a miserable failure and I ended up putting it aside entirely in favour of other things at the time.
Around six months ago I picked it back up, this time with an Internet connection and collected everything I needed and ended up spending nearly two months just reading about learning without acting starting. Massive procrastination problem, spent more time lurking these threads than anything else. New exactly what I had to do, even had it all planned out but didn't start.
It has taken the remainder of those two months up until 7/8 days ago to push myself to start. That's how bad I am with procrastination.

Pic related is at least for myself a representation of the start of progress and routine which has been missing from my life for over a decade. I want this post to serve as a starting point for a series of updates over the next two years, at intervals of next week, next month, the next three months, the next six months, etc. and to show myself and others that even if you are a completely useless fuck with no history of success or achievement, that you can do something long term and that you can learn Japanese.
A real sense of desperation is much more powerful than fleeting motivation.
>>
>>140621970
Do it once per month I won't bother reading your shitty posts if you do it once a week

Recognition will give you faster progress, production will ingrain the card into your mind stronger. I say go recognition because you'll be reinforcing what you see through reading to the point that you'll be able to produce visually and verbally eventually, but it really comes down to what works for you.

Also, if you want to be able to write, go for production but make sure that you learn stroke order using Jisho or something.

I'm a Russian minor, but next semester I'm taking a Beginning Japanese course as an elective before going on a family trip to Tokyo and Hiroshima the following summer.

What am I in for? I assume three's lots of reddit-tier weebs wearing Death Note and Hatsune Miku merch while quoting anime? Professors that want to kill themselves because of those very same students?

Also where should I begin, considering I've never looked into learning japanese at all before now?
>>
>>140636089

You will learn very little. Like, a phrase book and a few common words to form basic sentences. You won't be even less able to read the written language.

Japanese is very far removed from English which makes teaching in a non-intensive class almost pointless.

It's 5 days a week at my college and the only people I know who can speak decently after a couple years of the classes are the ones who already know Chinese.
Unlike most of this thread I don't actually think it's terrible to start out in a class, since the beginning is the most boring and it would make it more fun, plus you would have your teacher correcting your pronunciation to some extent. But if you want to get good you cannot rely on classes. You will eventually have to go much faster than your classes pace - enough to make classes a complete waste of time.

There's an easy way to tell if your college has worthwhile language classes, and that is if the class is taught entirely in the foreign language (after the first year or so)
The answer is no for most 4 year universities.

>>
>>140641221
> However, there's better resources and opportunities at these top schools
See >>140640344
Top tier colleges are better at more things, but there will be things they are not better at. This is especially true for grad school where faculty positions are hard to get so every department will have a couple of geniuses. That's my main point, which is why saying "top tier schools will have X" is silly. You could easily end up excluding something like MIT just because it doesn't focus on whatever intensive liberal arts thing you deem top schools should have.
>>
>>140641401

Not sure what you mean by "intensive liberal arts thing". LACs (think Williams, Middlebury, Amherst) are liberal arts colleges.

MIT is actually excellent in the liberal arts, especially in language study (I have a couple of friends attending).

Of course no institution can have it all. But the general trend is these colleges have the prestige and funding to attract the better professors and students (which affects your classroom experience). That's why all I said was "As far as I know, language instruction is excellent at the top tier universities and LACs".

This isn't necessarily true. I studied a language for 2.5 years at a top 5 school and learned at a terrible rate compared to self-studying Japanese with DJT.
>>
>>140642995
Any class is going to be slow compared to what you are capable of doing yourself because classes are supposed to be 1/4 of your coursework each plus leaving you with some free time.
>>
>>140642995

You need to supplement language study yourself as well. You still probably received better instruction in that language compared to "worse" schools (don't like to put it that way, but whatever).

Some of the Japanese majors at my school (top 15) leave at the N3 level, whereas some are N1 and good enough to land jobs in Tokyo.

>>
>>140642995
The only level worth taking at my school was the highest, which required a placement exam and was designed to be impossible without some degree of past or accelerated self-study. You couldn't enter it by starting from 101.

I didn't get placed in it due to my shitty speaking skills from self-studying and ended up taking the typical senior-level course which was pretty much a waste of time, even though it was in japanese. Too much time wasted on stupid questions and catering to the slowest students.

I do 40 kanji, 40 vocab, 20 grammar (form the DOJG deck) a day

The longest part by far is the grammar, becuase i read the cards fully and it takes about 3-10 to read and comperhend each new card, review is faster but cloze with a hint is much harder than any kanji or vocab card since there are many synonyms and shit.

Just finished DBJG, and so I will keep reviewing and cut my cards per day to 10.

I started DOJG 10 days ago and the vocab/kanji 23 days ago. It took me 195 minutes to finish the 600 cards I had today, and the grammar took more than half of the time, even thought it only had 1/5th (120) of the cards.

I get distracted a lot, whether by imageboards or by looking up the kanji on jisho/reading random koohi mnemonics or w/e, and coldturkey can't help with the later 2.

Vocab is by far the easiest and I'm on tract to finish the 1320/2200 remaining kanji in 33 days, and the remaining vocab (if I cut grammar to 10/day) in 40 days, after that, I'll start learning vocab in earnest (probably double my vocab learning if I don't burn out by then), and hopefully it'd be smooth sailing.

No, I'm learning them in the due order, though the due order seems kind of fucked up.

Like, I get several words in a row all using the same kanji, but whereas you would expect the deck to start on easy kanji like 一, 日, 今, etc., the first kanji to appear in this deck were 外 and 観 (from the word 外観).

As you can see from pic related when I sort KanjiGrid by JLPT order, I'm getting a lot of fairly advanced kanji considering I'm only two weeks into the deck.

I'm wondering if someone uploaded this deck to the CoR as a troll or something. I only picked it over the 6K deck because this one was labelled "further optimised", while the 6K deck was merely labelled "optimised".

I wasn't interested in KanjiGrid as a means of showing off, I wanted to use it as a way of ordering the kanji in the deck to facilitate writing practice. Additionally, I was going to use it to visualise which kanji I was weak on so I could devote extra time to them.

It seems as though I won't be able to do that now though. I've checked the Core6K deck and that orders correctly with kanjigrid, so I'm thinking of starting over with that deck, though it'll mean I've wasted two weeks on this one reviewing cards that probably won't show up in the 6K deck for months.

Obviously writing helps reinforce your memory of the kanji, since you spend lots of extra time around those kanji.

But if you instead spent that time reading, or doing vocab, that would also help reinforce your memory and also actually help you with other more useful aspects of Japanese. It's not that writing is completely useless, it's that the time is more efficiently spent elsewhere.
>>
>>140650194
Maybe if you live in the 80s and can't just use anki.

You're supposed to change the order. It was exaplained on the Ankiweb shared decks page but the deck was pulled during the whole iKnow/smart.fm trying to pull copyright infringement bullshit. What likely happened was that the version uploaded to the CoR didn't have the order changed. It is pretty simple to change the order
Here is a text file of the order. You can use this .csv and import into the deck and use that if you want.

Alternatively, in the deck browser, select your core10k deck, all of the cards (ctrl+a) and click the "sort field" column so the sort order starts at 1/0 and continues down in an ascending order. Now click Edit→Reposition, now the cards should be in their proper order. If the due order doesn't match up with this, now select all the cards and go to Edit→Reschedule.

Pick related are the fields I'm using, so you're going to have to set up your deck with the fields as I have in order for the text file to import smoothly. I removed a bunch of fields from the original data but you can add them back in by exporting the deck to text yourself with Anki.

https://a.uguu.se/lkoigs_core10k.txt

Also, here is a pastebin of the order, vocab only.

Not sure what you are trying to illustrate. The first one is a statement of confidence that the person knows there is some rice left in the cupboard and the latter is a statement of recall, the person not claiming that there is in fact some rice in the cupboard but they remember some rice being left in the cupboard and assumes it may still be there.

That isn't an issue of tense but an issue of nuance.

The context is key here. It's not about confidence or recall, it's about an item being found and then that information is relayed.

I haven't read many LNs since I don't actually watch anime. I think I've watched 3 series over the past 10 years?

But I do recommend Kino's Journey since it was the first LN I've read. The sentences are extremely simple and clean, and it still gets the message across. After that you can try Spice and Wolf maybe.

Perhaps someone else who's more informed can help you. Good luck.

>I haven't read many LNs since I don't actually watch anime.
What has one to do with the other?
>>
>>140662893
LN and anime are both otaku mass media garbage.
>>
>>140662893
Because the anime industry and LN industry are intertwined?
>>
>>140662907
The fuck are you doing on /a/?
Piss off.
>>
>>140662924
maybe he just likes manga my man
don't be so hostile even if hes ragebaiting
>>
>>140662918
And?
>>
>>140662924
I'm here for this thread, not for the shithole that is /a/ and anime. I like to read some manga once in a while, but I'm not an aggressive otaku about it.
>>
>>140662941
>don't be so hostile
This isn't tumblr.
>>
>>140662963
>aggressive otaku
idk man you literally just called /a/ a shithole so i don't think you have a place to complain
>>
>>140662963
>I'm here for this thread
This thread is for /a/nons. Fuck off to reddit, you piece of shit.
>>
>>140662967
hey man im not telling you to use nice words or conform to something just dont jump the gun so easily, all it does is derail the thread
you can get back at the ledditors and クールエイド in better ways
>>
>>140662963
You're an aggressive neckbeard instead, congrats.
>>
>>140662978
/a/ and anime are a shithole and you can't change it, no need to be so defensive about it.
>>140662990
Nah, but I see you are from there so why don't you go back?
>>140663009
But I said multiple times that I'm not an otaku.
>>
>>140663009

To think I have to share these helpful threads with you makes me sick.
It's a shame that your kin is polluting my dear shithole. First /v/ and now this. It keeps getting worse by the day.

Your lack of ability to recognise trolling makes me want to troll you even more

You can have it, but it's still healthy to realise that anime and /a/ are shit.
>>140663067
Cool photoshop skills man, did you learn that in anime?
Seems like you are in the majority here (majority of fat otakus) so the picture isn't really appropriate in this context.
>>140663068
Why is that exactly?
>>140663072
And to think that any one of the people who I talk with here are anime otakus makes my head spin.

Interesting that the "furry community" springs to your mind before anything else, did you remember your past and are now trying to atone for it?

Seems like you are really knowledgeable in furry terminology and you call it a 'community' and not a disgrace to humanity which makes it even more unlikely that you aren't one of them. But great job, almost had me fooled.
