If Mumei hadn't showed up everyone there would have died from Ayame refusing to budge without the signal, and there were only going to be more and more Kabane as time went on.

I don't think it's "fine" that he wanted Ikoma to kill himself but it's perfectly understandable why he wants him to do so, his entire life he's been told that any time someone gets bit they turn into Kabane and will kill everyone else, this is only reinforced in that he's probably seen people die from going halfway before due to being a high ranking member of the bushi. Based on his experiences, he doesn't have the luxury of giving anything the benefit of the doubt because that just leads to hundreds of innocent people dying.

I suspect it uses the string that runs inside of the limbs of the bow (not the one she's holding) to use the steam engine near the center of the bow to help apply extra tension to the bow-staves.

If I had to guess, it uses the steam to draw the assist strings in as the regular bowstring is being drawn back, then uses either a locking mechanism or more steam to hold them in place with the strings. When the bow is fired, it releases that tension at the same moment as the archer releases the string.

If you could actually make it work, it could actually be useful, in the sense that it would allow you to have what amounts to a compound bow (or one with all the benefits thereof) with an impressive draw weight, or at least allow a young woman to use a bow with a draw weight comparable to the longbow used by a yeoman archer raised from boyhood on the weapon.

Mumei's point is that if they hadn't been saved by luck, Ayame's bad decisions would have gotten everyone killed because she showed no intention to leave before the signal, no matter how much time passed.

Lets say the virus infects the host by emulating certain hormones or what have you, and slowly moving it's way through the central nervous system into various parts of the body.
