Last time I'm reposting this since I never got to post it near the start of a thread before.

DIY autoscrolling clipboard grabber for Opera and Chrome.

Code: http://pastebin.com/q2AF4HAg

Make a new directory somewhere and save each file into it with the correct filename and extension.

Somewhere else, create a file named cliphook.html with contents similar to:

><html><body id=_cliphook></body></html>

New clipboard contents will be inserted into the first element with id=_cliphook. Style at will.

Activate in Opera:

>Go to the browser address bar and type opera:extensions (or use the Cmd/Ctrl Shift E shortcut)
>Check the “Developer Mode” button to enable it.
>Click on the “Load Unpacked Extension…” button.
>Select your extension’s directory

Activate in Chrome (untested):

>Visit chrome://extensions in your browser (or open up the Chrome menu by clicking the icon to the far right of the Omnibox: The menu's icon is three horizontal bars. and select Extensions under the Tools menu to get to the same place).
>Ensure that the Developer mode checkbox in the top right-hand corner is checked.
>Click Load unpacked extension… to pop up a file-selection dialog.
>Navigate to the directory in which your extension files live, and select it.

Bugs:
* Always autoscrolls, even if there's no new clipboard data.
* Can miss lines that don't stay in the clipboard for at least a second or two

I do believe that when your child does poorly on a test, your first step should not necessarily be to attack the teacher or the school's curriculum. It should be to look at the idea that, maybe, the child didn't work hard enough.

You can add in plenty of words in English as well when you're trying to be polite. Really the longer = politer idea holds true in English too. It's the difference between "Can I ask you something?" and "Excuse me, but is it possible for me to bother you for just a moment?"

Somewhat relative. After spending a few years on and off trying to get the motivation to study for more than a day or two a month then throwing it all away for various ultimately foolish reasons, I've started to get into a routine -something I've never really had in my life- which doesn't really require any great motivation or willpower to adhere to. All it took way laying out my anki deck facts on a spreadsheet and arranging them to the different words/kanji/grammar learned each day and a means of ticking off, checking and maintaining progression.

Maybe after a year of successive study/routine I may have developed other positive lifestyle routines and find it far easier to gain focus. That may be enough time to start to unlearn patterns of thought which I have used to allow the past decade to blur in contemplation and idleness.

In some ways your situation may be a certain version of my own only one year ahead. For both your sake and mine, I hope your situation is a hell of a lot better than it was before you started studying almost every day. We're all gonna make it, man.

Not him, but I slacked off for a long time, then started taking it seriously. That was a little over a year ago, and I've since finished Core 6k and gotten a fair amount of reading in.

If learning Japanese has become enough of a priority to him that he won't give up and won't allow himself to miss days, he'll get it right this time.
If he's still half-baked in his determination, he'll repeat the same mistakes.

Few fun observations for folks who have never been:

>anybody over 40 hates you unless they are serving you

>anybody under 40 tolerates you and may even be friendly, but usually only when their job requires it.

This is a bit out outside of my usual jurisdiction, but here goes.

Anons, the CoR is in danger. As you've probably heard, MEGA will probably not be around for much longer, and all the files that we have hosted in the CoR will disappear along with MEGA if that happens.

https://torrentfreak.com/kim-dotcom-warns-mega-users-to-backup-their-files-160421/

The CoR is a huge collection of raw manga, textbooks, light novels and other materials from which many of us who are learning the Japanese language can benefit.
From our passion arises an obligation to those who share our passion and to those who will adopt this same passion long after the flames in our hearts have died. We must not let this valuable collection of resources be lost.

I ask not only for us, but for those who are to come after us, all of those who have any amount of disk space to spare: Download! Download as much as you can store.

We may not yet know where to host what we saved once MEGA is gone, but our first priority must be to save, as much as we can if not all of it.

Happy learning.

Why do you think I've been telling people to use GNUnet
>>
>>140517576
Downloading copyrighted content is not illegal in my country, so I'll certainly be downloading as much as I possibly can.

If you have concerns about your personal security, that is up to you. I am asking those who are brave (or foolish) enough to overlook these risks for the greater good.

Though I don't think that there's any very big risk for single individuals who are downloading Japanese textbooks. Governments have better things to go after than people who live in basements.

>>140517623
We'll have to worry about what happens with MEGA and where to host the files afterwards, for now we know that MEGA is probably not the safest long term solution and that it would be incredibly stupid to risk loosing all that information.

Again, GNUnet is basically open source perfect dark on steroids. Except it doesn't force you to download and store unknown encrypted data, just route it, and people in the US are protected by carrier laws when acting as routers for information they can't filter.

>As for ある aru, there's a popular myth that いる iru is for animate objects and ある aru for inanimate (I think some textbooks are to blame). While there is a tendency for this to be the case, the real distinction is that いる iru is the default word for “to be” while ある aru is an alternative slightly closer to “to exist”, and there simply is no hard rule to tell which one is “correct.” Much of the time both are valid, even if one is slightly more natural. It's kinda similar to the は vs. が problem.

It's quite troubling that most older novels seem to feature protagonists using the personal pronoun 僕. My running theory is that the further back in Japan's history one goes, up to 1945, the more cucked the general population becomes, due to American's complete occupation and control of their country. I wouldn't be surprised if General MacArthur, blessed be his soul, ordered any Japanese person using 俺 to be shot on sight, thereby thinning the alpha populace and ensuring docile compliance. A novel written in 1950, therefore, would be near "Peak Cuck". This is important because even though 2016 Japan is more or less uncucked, those who grew up reading novels from the 50s and 60s would have the 僕 cuck mentality firmly engrained within their thought patterns. Thus, novels written in the 1990s even feature 僕 greater, for though it's 45 years after Peak Cuck, the author grew up reading material produced in the Peak Cuck era. The reason 俺 managed to recently break through the Great Cultural Wall of Cuck is through the popularity of shounen manga. Deft scholars, aware of their Cuckened State, drew fantastical landscapes of hot-blooded youths proudly addressing themselves as 俺, which in turn awoke the slumbering Masculinity within the Japanese children reading them. Therefore, while youths reading Peak Cuck literature continued their use of 僕 while writing 1990s novels, youths who grew up with shounen ended up using 俺 in eroge, manga, and other such media. The modern era is a blessed era, for those infected with the Peak Cuck cultural continuation are actually heavily mocked in NTR stories, shounen, etc. Soon, the Japanese will likely all use 俺, except the 大和撫子ズ who will serve as the wives of the New Japanese citizens.

>>
>>140535957
Japanese has "killed" the kanjis as well, all they would need to do is start writing in all kana and poof there go kanji. No significant changes to the language necessary, really. The reason that hasn't happened is simply because no one wants to stop. Once you know the kanji they're not an obstacle to communication, far from it in fact.

Solution: Core should be removed from the guide
>>
>>140543386

I don't think that's a good idea. Even though it's "shit" it's not THAT bad. Having Core as a default recommendation for newbies lets people have something (somewhat) reliable that they can progress with while they also experiment with finding their own way to learn. If we took Core off the guide we would get a hell of a lot more "I learned the kana and did Tae Kim, now what, I don't know enough to read", etc. It's valuable having Core to pacify those questions while they get proficient enough that they won't ask them in the first place.

Sorry if this is not the appropriate thread for this but the scanlation thread isn't up and I don't even remember when it comes up during the week.

I'm trying to translate something into English but it's not my native language and I've never translated anything before and don't know how many liberties it's appropriate to take.

The sentence goes like this. "首を寝違えた""左向けん" Should the last part be translated with "I can't face left" or "I can't turn my head left".

I feel like the second one might be more natural in English but I'm adding words that aren't there to begin with.
>>
>>140544325
sorry the only response i can give you is eat shit stop translating
>>
>>140542875
I don't think the guy ever added the audio and it is the best part of the deck. Not sure about that though, since I did Nayr's 5k. Nayr's had some problems, the biggest one being that the vocab word and the definition were in the same field, so you couldn't just put the word on the front, you had to use it as a sentence deck. Anon5k fixed that. Hopefully it gains more traction in the future.

We have a Japnese table at my university where we can talk to exchange students but every time I go I feel like learning Japanese is impossible. I've been reading manga and VNs for a while now and have started LNs recently but when I go to table I either sit there and don't say anything like an autist or fuck up really badly and can't hold a conversation at all. How can I actually learn to speak Japanese /djt/? Is it really impossible if you aren't extremely outgoing in conversation?

Really the best way to get better at producing is to practice producing, you could try doing monologues by yourself or something until you get more comfortable talking with the native speakers.

Yeah I guess you're right. I'm not very naturally sociable and pretty hard on myself which isn't very conducive to learning this way anyways. Honestly though, the Japanese exchange students at table aren't exactly great conversationalists either. If you mess up and they couldn't understand or you are struggling to come up with a word they just kinda stare at you blankly instead of offering any help. I don't feel like I'm so unintelligible that they have no idea what I'm trying to get at but it always makes me feel even stupider. Anyway, I guess I'm just rambling now. I'd really like to find some speaking partners that I could actually hold a conversation with but I don't even know where to begin.

Yeah, DJT but speaking out loud nearly entirely in Japanese. Good point on the English though, I think it would be best to try to find people who actually care about learning english and just kind of flip back and forth when one person is having trouble with a phrase. I'd like to do exchange sometime so maybe I could find some people like this and actually improve my speaking eventually.

>>140545705
Good ideas, often when I'm bored I'll think through some random Japanese conversation in my head, but I always have trouble putting things into words when actually speaking with people. I kinda wish I didn't have room mates so I could just walk around speaking Japanese out loud like an insane person.

What's the best freetype Japanese font without huge spacing between lines? All of the standard replies, like meiryo or noto sans cjk, have massive line spacing and it looks like ass.

The best one I've found is "Textar" (it also has the exact same spacing as mspgothic so sjis art renders right, which is great).

Not that guy, but I've been reading Satsukoi for almost 4 months. It feels more difficult than Flyable Heart and seems to use more vocabulary, especially during sex scenes, which are more like anatomy classes.

As for enjoyment, there are some good parts and the overall plot is interesting. I actually want more plot and less high school and sex scenes. I'm not finished, so I'm expecting that I haven't seen the best scenes yet. I am looking forward to the plot's conclusion.

I'm almost done with the 2nd route. I'm trying to finish everything by May 1, so I've been putting a lot more time in every day, as can be seen in my mining chart.

>>
>>140548675
It's great, I'm loving it. It feels really unique for some reason, just the way the story and characters are presented is structured so differently from what I've come to expect from VNs. I guess it's the change from the usual SoL fun->romance->drama->sex->climax->end, and the characters' blatant disregard for random peoples' lives. Common route spoilers: I predicted who the imouto was, it was fairly obvious, but didn't see the other guy's betrayal coming at all, that was great.

Also brown > yellow > red > green.

Language isn't really a problem for me at this stage, have to occasionally look up a few words every now and again (eg 五月蝿い) but that's it.

It was pretty good. The presentation was really really nice, in terms of visuals and audio and stuff, it felt really polished and relaxing. Some of the routes were beautiful and amazing, the romance was genuinely heart-filling and the drama tear-inducing, really a sublime representation of moege that gave the warm feeling of being in love with someone. Sadly the other routes were fairly shit and boring, with lame drama and generic, uninteresting romance. Although on the bright side, even if I didn't like the girl at all the sex scenes were still great thanks to how cute the MC is.

Can anyone recommend some of the books from the CCOR (or whatever it is called) which explain more how to sound manly and not to rude.

>>
>>140557907
>VNs: 54gb
You probably did your download before he deleted everything he had control over since the VN sheet was only on his 2nd doc and wasn't added to the CoR for various reasons. You likely have most of the stuff that's currently missing from the CoR.
>>
>>140557487
>You should've been using one to solidify what you've learned after each chapter.
I disagree. A deck CAN be helpful, but it takes away too much of your time (especially with that many cards and how long sentences take to read through when your vocab is that low and your reading speed is as slow as it is when you're first going through Tae Kim). If you can get by with a deck, you're much better off just going through Tae Kim faster and solidifying it through reading and then referencing Tae Kim / using the DoJG deck while reading.
>>
>>140557976
>You likely have most of the stuff that's currently missing from the CoR.
Probably.
It is rather unfortunate however as I have no way to upload any of it at the moment as I recently moved away from a place with a landline connection and are limited to using mobile bandwidth. I have all the pies but no party to share the feast with.
>>
>>140558025
It's not too big of a deal. Most of it is on nyaa or ddl sites anyways, the CoR versions are just more convenient and better organized (most of them at least; there are a few entries that are flat out nyaa mirrors here and there, but they're marked).

I wish there were an eloquent way to tell this to people. Anki is for extensive things that are difficult for you to naturally acquire for whatever reason. It just so happens that foreign vocabulary is one of those things when you're not literate in that foreign language.
>>
>>140557971

>>
>>140558374
It's a grammar dictionary and you should start looking things up in it as soon as you start reading.
>>
>>140558022
>you're much better off just going through Tae Kim
The problem is that you'll have forgotten half of what you just learned the next morning. You might as well just learn it properly, rather than coming back later and trying to guess which chapter actually covered the thing you're confused about.
>>
>>140558434
That's how learning works. You don't actively recall things until you've recalled them "in the wild" a few times because something reminded you about them.

And if you want to memorize large textual information, like descriptions, you should use supermemo. Not anki.
>>

>>
>>140558473

Why?
>>
>>140558908
Supermemo is designed around memorizing large textual information and has a lot of features and scheduling quirks designed to optimize this.

Anki is very general purpose, and general purpose flashcards are best for memorizing simple relationships like definitions or answers to quiz questions and doing so via recognition testing.

How exactly does it differ to Anki in this regard?
>>
>>140558473
You aren't trying to memorise the sentence, or the descriptions. It's just supposed to serve as an easy review of the stuff you've learned.
>>
>>140559017
>How exactly does it differ to Anki in this regard?
It's a completely different program with a completely different interface and a completely different spaced repetition system. The most obvious benefit, even before you get into supermemo's extensive features, is the fact that it has more than four answer states, which is basically essential for efficiently scheduling cards that aren't structured in recall or recognition format. On the extensive stuff like incremental reading, you should read about it yourself.

http://help.supermemo.org/wiki/Features#Main_features

>>140559129
That is the very reason that anki is not the ideal program for grinding this kind of thing.
>>
>>140559194
>It's a completely different program with a completely different interface and a completely different spaced repetition system.
The algorithm Anki uses is a slightly older version of the current algorithm Supermemo uses.

>On the extensive stuff like incremental reading, you should read about it yourself.
You can do that in Anki.

>>

Not "slightly". Way older. And much worse at scheduling things that don't fall under the recall or recognition format.

Anki objectively does not have supermemo's incremental reading features. Anki does not have any system for trying to optimally schedule different sections of the same article. Anki does not have any system for scheduling cards past "wrong" and "some level of right". Anki does not handle exposure scheduling in any capacity. Supermemo does.

>>

That's because the DoJG deck doesn't drill grammar. It drills individual phrase structure meanings. Phrase structure and grammar are different things.

>>
>>140560064
Even if someone didn't read the book, the source itself is embedded in the cards (the notes). Each entry is in effect the entry from the volume in a digital format.
>>
>>140560008
>Could you explain the difference and how this is meaningful to the learner?
A phrase structure is like a building block in a sentence patterns. A given phrase structure actually has a meaning, because it's an isolated example of the results of the rules of grammar. Phrase structures have a lot of underdefined influences on them, including unspoken and unwritten categorization systems, that are not a part of "the grammar".

A grammar is the description of the structural rules of a language. A grammar includes syntactical descriptions. A grammar does not have to include phonetics, semantics, or nuance/pragmatics, and including any of these things does not make something a grammar. Following a grammar can easily result in a sentence that is patent nonsense because it does not actually use any phrase structures.

A grammar describes the syntax rules used in building phrase structures. Grammar defines things like tense, conjugations, and irregularities, and the rules that apply to structuring predicates and phrases. Grammar does not actually define the meaning of these things. That's semantics, and semantics is not grammar.

Tae Kim is both a grammar guide and a semantics/pragmatics guide, but in DoJG, the grammar (the construction rules) is a small subset of the information it provides, and the most important information present in DoJG is in the summaries and the notes, which are easy to access via the deck. I don't know of a deck that specifically organizes the information present in Tae Kim for reviewing just the meaning-related material.
>>
>>140560270

>>
>>140560270
>Grammar defines things like tense, conjugations, and irregularities, and the rules that apply to structuring predicates and phrases
These are present in the DoJG deck/book.
>Grammar does not actually define the meaning of these things.
Isn't that a bit of a chicken and egg situation?

It seemed rather obvious that the usage of "grammar" was not in the narrow linguistic sense you are applying but rather a connotative/general sense but thanks for your response regardless.

>>140560367
>you could use that to only reread (in detail) the parts you forgot or didnt understand the first time
Not if that is the first time you have encountered the text itself. The cards in the Anki deck have the same layout and content of the volume main concept entries themselves. Or are you talking about something else entirely?
>>
>>140560431
>These are present in the DoJG deck/book.
I say that.
>Isn't that a bit of a chicken and egg situation?
That's right. That's why how grammar and meaning are related is an open problem in linguistics. Someone posted about bare phrase structure the other day and I pretty much instantly fell in love with the topic and read like five books of various complexity summarizing the current state of the field of linguistics.

No need to mislead anon. It is going to be pretty rocky for a while regardless because even よつばと! is nothing like Tae Kim's grammar guide in terms of real world usage. I think a lot of beginners give up early under the pretence that content which is told to others that are "great for learners" is supposed to be easily accessible when in reality it takes a while to get used to the idiosyncrasies of character speech and nuance.

Probably better being upfront and explaining that it will seem like a headache at first but will shortly fade if they stick it out. Going through something like Tae Kim helps the mental fog being less dense but they are still going to be staggering through it a while before it begins to clear up.
