Do I look like a 日本人 just based on my looks? Now I need some culture knowledge and I think I'll be ready for 日本. What are the best eroge or LNs for acquiring that?
>>
>>140474502
You're definitely joking, but you'll absorb Japanese culture without a doubt just by reading things in general. Sticking to works written with a more mature mindset is best so you don't get like an aho protagonist who behaves deceptively.

After reading a lot of Japanese I've started bowing a lot subconciously and frequently those around me comment on my weird sense of morality which I've doubtlessly gained from all these white knight VN protagonists.

How long does it take to get a Japanese mind? I have been forcing myself to think in Japanese and I'm trying to adopt the 武士道 code now.
Have you read any good eroge or ln about katanas and how to wield them?

>>
>>140474744
Well, unfortunately, western values will forever taint you. At best you can approach a mindset similar to Soseki's, in that you could appear similar to a Japanese person who lived abroad at some point in their life.

As for katanas, definitely read Muramasa and Hanachirasu. The author of those is a master of kendo and is very kuwashii about their usage, and this is reflected in his novels to a great deal.

I try to eliminate my western values everyday, but they are so deeply ingrained in me that I can't suppress them 24/7.
I will definitely buy these eroge you recommended. And are there any eroge that would teach me about the more mystical side of katana usage when I master the techniques in Muramasa and Hanachirasu?

Last week, I started practicing some kanji handwriting, but I ended up not being able to keep it up. I intended to practice ~15 different kanji a day, 5 repetitions each, but it didn't work out really well, since I had already forgotten the first 15 or so by the end of the week.

Should I continue with this method or try a different approach? What approach would you suggest?

holy cow. I just started to read flyable heart(dad woke me up).
Tae Kim wasn't rely the right thing for me. I bought the Basic DJOG and just read through half of it. This feels so motivating right now.

But here is the thing now: Do I make progress, when I cling to chiitrans for a while? I just hover over every word, cause it marks the end of the kana-only-words. It feels like I'm cheating.
>>
>>140475452
The way I see it, Anki is shit when it comes to practicing handwriting, mainly due to the fact that stroke order IS importat. I can already recognize several different kanji thanks to Anki, but I want to be able to write them out if I ever need or want to write a letter or somthing like this.
>>
>>140475635
>but I want to be able to write them out if I ever need or want to write a letter or somthing like this.
Putting aside that this will never happen (ever hear of printers?), Anki is definitely not shit when it comes to practicing handwriting, and I have no idea what stroke order has to do with that.
>>
I am learning through Genki and now I can read basic novels but I feel like I can't understand them. What should I do?

>>140475635
So you just search them on Jisho, learn the stroke order, and then write it everytime it comes up in Anki. Anki is still useful for repeatedly making you write/read it.

Well, the thing is that I want to become fluent in Japanese and fluency is usually defined as an individual's proficiency is all four elements of a language: writing, reading, listening, and speaking.

>So you just search them on Jisho, learn the stroke order, and then write it everytime it comes up in Anki.

That's actually not true. Plenty of fluent speakers are illiterate. Some fluent people are deaf. Some fluent people are blind. Etc. And, it's actually a growing trend in Japan for natives to be unable to write anyway. So really, it's a laughable prospect, attempting to learn to write. Not even natives do it.

Just wondering, how long has everyone here been trying to learn Japanese? Can you read a newspaper, or a book, or even a manga and do you need to reference your material? No. I can speak Japanese (though I tend to mess up formal/informal speech), I can watch anime and I can read manga without much issues in terms of reading or listening comprehension, but vocabulary (or rather the lack thereof) is a huge barrier that keeps getting in the way of being able to understand things or expressing oneself.
I think you're fluent once you can pick up a book, start and hold a conversation or watch a movie or TV show just as casually as you would in your native language.

>>
>>140476453
There's a reason why "native" and "fluent" are different categories when you're filling something out and there's a reason why most foreigners who study in the US, for example, do better than the natives on English exams.
While foreigners actually study the language, natives' knowledge of their own language is merely intuitive.

Hello /DJT/!
I'm close to finishing up with Genki 1 and was hoping some of you here could help me understand んです better, because it hasn't clicked for me like the rest of the grammar so far.
For instance, Genki describes one of the uses of ~んです as a mode of explaining things, yet i cannot see how it differs from ~から or any reason to use ~んです over ~から, since to me it seems like they both have basically the same purpose.
Also, I am having trouble understanding ~んですか. It seems to have the exact same use and wording as question word + か sentences.
The only use that somewhat makes sense to me is using ~んです to provide additional commentary to someone else's statement as i cannot off the top of my head think of any other specific grammatical way to do that yet.
Does ~んです have an english equivalent or equivalents? If so, what are they?
Thanks in advance!

Dude this is the thing you just don't worry about because it answers itself when you start reading. Right now, concern yourself with knowing what things mean. If you don't know what a sentence means because it uses んです that's a problem. But you don't really need to be able to use it yourself (yet). Japanese has a lot of small things that don't significantly change the meaning of a sentence but slightly affect the tone. Sentence enders like よ/わ are another big things like this

i cant point you to a chapter but ん is just a generally chill way to say の
>>
>>140483332
How could I point you to a chapter in genki if I'm not fucking retarded and I don't use it? Genki is garbage and your posts prove that.
>>
>>140483332

Thanks, I'll give it a read.

Why do you guys hate learnjapane reddit so much? They have good native answers, they ban troll, they have mod and such thing.

>>140483794
Because it's full of ESLs.
>>
>>140483794
DJT hates any place that has people who can actually speak japanese
>>
So, I've been reading up on how to learn Japanese.

Am I right to assume that I should learn following these steps: 1) Hiragana 2)Katakana 3)grind them until I will be able to read them at any point at any time 4)learn basic grammar with Tae Kim 5)learn common Kanji symbols 6)hone points 1, 2 and 5 by reading in Japanese.
>>
>>140484004
can they actually speak japanese on reddit i havent been there maybe that was my home all along
>>
>>140484016
>learn common Kanji symbols
Skip that and replace it with vocabulary.
>>
>>140484065
skip that and learn how to ask questions
>>
>>140484016
I recommend you learn all the way to advanced grammar before seriously reading anything longer than manga, you'll parse things much better
>>
>>140484065
If you want to have great language skills just like he does then yeah, skip that and just do vocab.
>>
I am currently studying Genki 2, as I will be going to japan in October to study for a year at a language school. Due to not having enough time to take all the semesters at school, I decided to self study genki 1 over the summer and took the placement test after about 2 months (along with a tutor), and was able to get into the 3rd semester class. I've finished my third semester, and due to not enough enrollment for the 4th I've had to go back to self study.
I got an A in the class, but I couldn't help notice my vocabulary is severely lacking, so I went the route of using memrise. I just started it, but I like it a lot. So my question is, since the deck I am using has whole sections dedicated to the kanji of all the vocab (not just the ones at the end of each section) Should I be doing these sections as well? Mainly because I don't know if these are essential kanji, or if there are other kanji that would be better to study instead, and I don't have a lot of time to get it all down before I go.
>>
>>140484176
i dont feel like dragging my eyes all the way across the screen to read this but im sure if youre doing genki youll be fine in japan (not sarcasm)

I mean, I might just have a very different eye for that than your average person (maybe it's autism who knows) and pretty much every time I've ever made something that I think looks amazing everyone else says it looks like shit.

But still, I really like stuff better when it's designed by people who don't know anything. It's usually more colorful and more interesting.
Whenever you get some pro to design stuff it all just looks bland and generic.
Basically it's the difference between web 2.0 and web 1.0. I fucking hate how websites look these days.

Why would I want to make the world a more boring place for myself? I probably enjoy more things as "artistic" than people who know a ton of art theory do.

Jamal/china is the nickname of the poster who refuses to type in proper English and often posts Japanese hip-hop music. He is one of the two current most infamous DJT posters, the other being Sakura autist. The difference between them being that Sakura autist is actively trying to kill DJT out of resentment through various methods, while Jamal, although his posts aren't very good, are ultimately fairly harmless and well-intentioned.

Actually it worked out fine when it was done in the past. The image with riko from love lab and some other girl was used several times. The Sakura image changed the whole design, so that isn't an example.

DIY autoscrolling clipboard grabber for Opera and Chrome.

Code: http://pastebin.com/q2AF4HAg

Make a new directory somewhere and save each file into it with the correct filename and extension.

Somewhere else, create a file named cliphook.html with contents similar to:

><html><body id=_cliphook></body></html>

New clipboard contents will be inserted into the first element with id=_cliphook. Style at will.

Activate in Opera:

>Go to the browser address bar and type opera:extensions (or use the Cmd/Ctrl Shift E shortcut)
>Check the “Developer Mode” button to enable it.
>Click on the “Load Unpacked Extension…” button.
>Select your extension’s directory

Activate in Chrome (untested):

>Visit chrome://extensions in your browser (or open up the Chrome menu by clicking the icon to the far right of the Omnibox: The menu's icon is three horizontal bars. and select Extensions under the Tools menu to get to the same place).
>Ensure that the Developer mode checkbox in the top right-hand corner is checked.
>Click Load unpacked extension… to pop up a file-selection dialog.
>Navigate to the directory in which your extension files live, and select it.

lets talk about the beautiful nuance differences between です and だよ

remember boys >>140482804
>>
>>140500259
>"love ya" sounds kind of like hick speech
Yeah, I guess that's a thing. People don't write "ya" even when they're saying "ya". They just write "you" instead. In writing, strictly phonetic dialect differences get normalized.

However, the intended difference between the japanese statements is basically the same as the difference between "It's beloved" and "It is beloved", but you can't construe anything like that in english. "I love you" "You too" is totally different.

Welcome to translation. Representing the original nuances is impossible. You'll have to decide whether the bubble or the character is more important to you.
>>
>>140500259
>I still wish I could figure out a way to make it clear they are talking at the same time.
If its in the same speech bubble then it should be good enough. Just make sure that the sentences are spaced vertically from each other with sufficient space. Something like

Love you

Me too...

>>
>>140500572
>The vertical space between the sentences indicates a brief moment.
Yeah but they're supposed to be literally simultaneous. That's the whole impact of the original.
>>
>>140500571
It depends on the reason you're translating. If you love the original piece as a fantastic work of art and are translating it so more people will be able to appreciate its beauty, then I agree that you should aim to capture the original as best as you can. If not, it doesn't really matter, does it?
>>
>>140500429
I get what you are saying. I know there is no real simple clear cut answer to this. I just figured someone here would have a better idea how to handle it than myself.

My first idea was actually more along the lines of >>140500239

I was going to something like
I love you [...]
K: a lot! | U: so much!

But that's so different than what です and だよ actually mean that I was hesitant.

>>140500470
Saying "me too" at the same time as "love you" would basically look like they were reading minds.
>>
>>140500591
Well you can't exactly put it like that unless you have two speech bubbles which we don't have the option of doing. Best to have both in the same sentence as that way it implies that either one character said that she loves the other and that the other responded in that manner.
>>
>>140500665
>Well you can't exactly put it like that unless you have two speech bubbles which we don't have the option of doing.
Why not? The original did.
>>
>>140500572
>>140500665
theyre saying it at the same time lamebrain

why are we talking about translations we dont even understand the text itself

by the way i hate to destroy your guys lives but the best answer is to just translate both as i love you

thats just how life works deal with it love ya

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tfq4zjzpTPA
>>
>>140500669
Then use both speech bubbles or something
>>140500649
Are the characters saying that they love each other, or are they both thinking it? Cause if they're both thinking it then, just adding "Love you" would be the best option

If you don't like it, then why translate it? I'm not saying changes aren't acceptable, there's some great reasons for making changes, but just making things up? Terrible. But I love translating and have been doing it for quite some time, both for fun and for money, officially and unofficially, and take great pride in what I do, so the suggestion of "Just make something up!" is something I can never agree with.

Well, I started translating as a way to study. It's not the only way, and there are better methods, but at the time I thought it a good idea because you're forced to understand what you read. When you're reading something just for pleasure, it's easy to skip something you can't understand. If you're translating something though, you need to know it, or you're a shit translator, and I didn't want to be a shit translator.

Eventually it became an enjoyable past time. Can't say why exactly I like doing it, I just do.

How am I a terrible translator? A terrible translator is someone whose Japanese is shit and misinterprets what he's reading, or whose English is shit and creates poor prose. Make up your mind. Either you're improving the original work by altering flawed writing, or you're trying to represent the original work in english in the way that a japanese reader would have read it.

You can't pick both.

You seem to be rejecting using the equivalent level of formality so you should probably not both asking about nuances you already understand.

>if you knew anything about english grammar you would know that "statal noun" isn't schoolhouse jargon for anything
Well, to possess the knowledge of what ESLs are taught about English grammar in their schools would imply one undertook such education. But if you learned it in formal linguistics studies, it would be normal to assume you realise languages form naturally and the purpose of such studies is to analyse and observe their details, not to formalise them and declare anyone deviating from your personal formalisation to be wrong.

No it's not. My personal system of English is correct. It is yours which is wrong.
Now, you might try to retaliate with my argument that "naturally" your English is acceptable. But this is patently false, as any real native would agree it is not.
>>
>>140503182
sorry bro but i'm pretty sure that the high end of academic linguistic description takes priority over your wishywashy isolated single-person description of a ruleset that developed out of reading shitty novellas
>>
>>140503182
that dude has more power behind his words than you do

do you understand why that is

as someone who takes pride in their "english" surely you can solve this little なぞ

No it's not.

haha i remember trying to holler at that dude during my lunch break about that

djt is a really dangerous place if you arent watching your step

Again, you make the mistake of assuming linguistics studies has any value or meaning. Words are defined by the people using them and not by your academics, who like to believe they actually have some relevance. If the vast majority of native speakers believe some English usage to be correct, then it becomes correct by definition, as in my case.
>>
>>140503272
>Again, you make the mistake of assuming linguistics studies has any value or meaning.
you make the mistake of assuming that your personal opinion has any value or meaning
how bout that

I'm sorry for helping you realise that the academia you spent years of your life studying was a complete waste of time.

>>
>>140503329
that's the funny part
i'm not an academic, and you're the one playing the part of the prescriptivist here
you're prescribing your personal ruleset and saying it's the correct one, then saying it's the correct one because it's describing yourself
do you realize how silly that is
>>
i like the one dudes writing a pretty good amount but its too confrontational for me

So you read Chomsky for fun in your spare time? Regardless, your statement is completely false. The reason my earlier English is correct is because the vast majority of native speakers would agree that it is. It's not my personal ruleset, it's that of everyone's.
>>
How do you say "Vape Nation" in nihongo?
>>

yep
>Regardless, your statement is completely false. The reason my earlier English is correct is because the vast majority of native speakers would agree that it is. It's not my personal ruleset, it's that of everyone's.
nope, the descriptionist ruleset take priority over individual people like yourself
it doesn't actually matter either way whether there's a correct english or not
just if there is one, it's the descriptionist's, not yours
personal opinions are literally the source of oppressive prescriptivism
you don't get to wield that sword when you're saying there's a correct grammar bro

their there and they're get mixed up a lot by retards and retards in the vast majority so maybe their there and they're just mean the same thing and mixing them up is a natural part of the english language, not a mistake
>>
sorry guys this is about the extent of how far i practiced this one
you'll have to live with the guy for a lil while
>>
>>140503480
No it doesn't. Your ruleset means nothing to anyone. It is the people as a mass who use the language that decide what is correct.

Now, I'll agree that if it was just me saying this, then it would be unfounded. But the fact that almost every native speaker would agree it is correct is what makes it correct. Like democracy, one personal opinion is meaningless, but all of them combined decide society as a whole.

Yes, because expecting me to survey a large portion of English natives is a reasonable requirement. You're the one who made the initial assertion that my statement was incorrect, the burden of proof is on you.
