Eh the newtype stuff was mysterious. It wasn't fantastic but it hardly made the show shit when there were so many other good things in it like Captain Bright.

As a rule most Gundam is slow, long, and becomes worth watching later rather than sooner.

I'm lucky enough that I've never watched a Gundam series I didn't like, but it would suck to do so.

I disagree. Ideon has some good scenes and interesting ideas but 0079 has a handful of really likeable, interesting characters (Char, Bright, Amuro, Kai Shiden) and Ideon doesn't really have any as far as I remember. I don't think people would even talk about Ideon much at all if it wasn't for Eva.
