"Everyday Life in Central Asia" if you want to know about what was life like for the various groups during the Tsarist Period, the Soviet Period and in the current Post-Soviet. It's interesting, but it focuses more on societal aspects and it more a collection of interesting academic papers than an actual book.

"The Great Game" by Peter Hopkirk is good too, but it's more for understanding the greater historical context with which the manga takes place in as it looks as the struggle between the British, the Russians, and the natives for control over the region.

"Empires of the Silk Road" was pretty meh. I had to pick this one up for a class and I was kind of disappointed in it, but it's cheap so that's a plus.

"When Asia was the World" has several good chapters centered on Central Asia during the Medieval period, but it's not Central Asian specific so it can be skipped.

I'm not really familiar with any documentaries, but there are probably some old NatGeo documentaries on the Silk Road on Youtube.

I can't wait for her marriage chapter, she'll be completely red the entire chapter.

I've been fascinated with this region of the world ever since 5th grade when I first heard the word "Silk Road".

I'd really love to travel the region, either starting from Istabul and working my way through the Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan), (maybe Iran if I can get a visa), all of the -stans, throughout Xinjiang and the Tarim Basin, and end in X'ian (or go the opposite way). They didn't disappear after the 19th century ended. The rule of the Tsars was fairly lite in Central Asia. They turned the region into a monoculture with their demand for cotton, but the integrated a lot of the local elite into their administrative system and didn't try and make them Russian. Two of the Emir's even kept their thrones and became protectorates. It wasn't until the the Tsar tried to force conscription on them that they took issue with the government. The USSR tried its best to destroy everything about the nomads and settled peoples of Central Asia and Mongolia.

Iran is really cool, only been to Tabriz, but its got a lot of history and I hear that it has a lot less smog than the capital. Never been to any of the Stans, but Kazakhstan is probably the only reliably safe one. Xinjiang is great for the history, but depressing because the natives are poor and deeply resentful of the fact that they are quickly becoming a minority in their own country.
