To be fair, I learned a second language, electrical engineering, programming, and tons of other shit from the internet.

Don't trust everything you read on the internet, but if you're not fucking retarded, you can learn whatever the fuck you want.

It's not like books are necessarily more reliable. Remember, they were written by people too. People write about shit that's not correct. Take the entire Genki textbook series for example.

>>139346468
Don't take KanjiDamage's word as law, that's a given for any learning source. It gives good exposure, and mnemonics, even if they are cringy and not 100% correct all of the time.

Having a basic understanding in layman's terms is better than having no understanding at all. When I was a child, I didn't know what masturbation was, so I asked my friend, who told me that it was using your hand to practice for sex. Obviously that's not a 100% accurate meaning of the word, but you get the idea. This is what I thought it was for years. Now I'm almost 20 and am a fucking pro.

Dismissing something for inaccuracies is what separates the できるs from the できないs. Read everything and gain exposure. Decide for yourself what a words means.

Alright DJT, you lot are probably the best people to ask this about.

My cousin has said they want to study Japanese at university, I'm suspecting it's due to them getting into anime. Is this going to fuck up their career prospects? Does going to university for a language suitably teach you it? Are they better off just learning it on their own?

My impression of these threads was that you are all selfteaching, but is university that bad idea and should I tell them to study something proper?

So, while I am reviewing RtK, should I try to remember every story I thought of, or if I remember the kanji instantly by just the keyword I should just flip it to verify?

I am at the first 50 right now, but the keyword instantly triggers the form of the kanji for me.

Alright, I'm going to start some kind of new challenge for myself in order to get better at Japanese.

I'm going to (re)watch all the Pokémon episodes in order from the very beginning in Japanese with Japanese subtitles. Not sure if I'll be able to find them all but at the very least if I can get all the raws it'd be pretty neat. If subs aren't available then I won't be using any as even English subs would I think hurt my experiment and break the immersion I'm aiming for (I'm already watching anime with English subs every day anyway).

Anyone wanna join me? I'm low intermediate by the way.

You have to build up methods to remember. I live in Japan, so I can hear the things I study in day to day life, and it clicks better. If you're in another country though, you have to immerse yourself in entertainment or it's just an uphill battle.

Tsuki is easy; Tsukino Usagi was Sailor Moon's full name (月野うさぎ)so a pun was that she was literally the moon's rabbit.

tsuki will be easier to remember once you learn it in other words, like 半月 (half a month), while using the same reading.

No, I personally think anime is shit. I'm an outlier in these threads and hate how exaggerated the voices are, and think people who speak like anime characters in real life are painfully obvious (and oblivious). DJT disagrees, but it's good listening practice regardless. I much prefer live action dramas and tokusatsu, if only for the practicality of adding actual body language. Either way, it just depends on what you'd enjoy most.

But you should do a little of anything and everything. Try reading a few pages of raw manga, see if you recognize anything. Watch a minute of raw anime with japanese subs and see what you recognize. Listen to karaoke on youtube and try to keep up with the furigana readings. Check out NHK news, or talk to a penpal. Study textbooks on top of Anki. There are a dozen ways, it's up to you.

Really depends on what you watch. The source material is typically manga for both drama and anime, so eh. Eh, modern tokusatsu is for children and housewives - that's why pretty boys are groomed as upcoming idols for mature dramas after. You'll often hear those same actors as VA's or see them on variety shows.

The fact that they're legacy characters (or rather, franchises) means a lot to Japan, where you're as likely to see an airing of a 40 year old anime as you are anything modern on television. Plus shows like Rider and Ultraman used to be prime nighttime family entertainment for many in their late 20s/early 30s. I think you're overestimating how much it's scorned. Watching anime past junior high school is much more derided (though the Western internet idea of otaku derision is way over exaggerated).

Are there any good Japanese shows to watch?

All anime this season is pure shit

The only two J Dramas worth a damn are

Is the production standard in Japan just really fucking low, or am I just used to better quality media because I live in America?

I talk to myself.
It is one of the ways my English was able to reach a point that for some reason normalfags often remark that I am "intelligent", despite being a fool who has make the same stupid mistakes for decades. It is one way of vocalising some of the things that build up in your head when you tend to spend time doing a lot of reading. It allows you to say things and have discussions with yourself in a spoken manner which isn't really possible unless you're talking to a group of hipsters at a bar who like to pretend they understand the world by rattling off buzzwords replete through their philosophy tutorial readings.

You can do the same with Japanese because just like with English, a good 99.99% of all spoken conversation you are ever going to have with people is the same mindless dribble people do just to stop themselves feeling as though they are doing something rude if a silence is able to find life between individuals.

You can also read aloud what you read and what you post online. It is a good opportunity to practice the movements and muscles involving in creating and maintaining a rhythm with speaking but with far less anxiety and without being limited to shit no one really wants or cares to talk about.

The best thing to ever happen to my ability to speak in English without being reduced to an anxiety mess of mumbling 100% of the time was by using similar techniques newsreaders use to practice their job. There are a few modern computer programs and mobile apps that do the same thing: showing text either scrolling or at intervals, forcing you to more or less build up a consistent pace at which you read out the text flashing in front of you.

Doing a google search for "android Teleprompter app" provides this as the first result, to give you an example what can be used to really get yourself speaking without anyone else around.

come on, my guy, stuff's not so bad.
you're right though, good ways to practice. thinking about, vocalizing possible conversations. for myself, if i'm studying something new i catch myself thinking about how i would explain it to another person, and it helps me solidify that knowledge. people forget the practicality of this kind of simulation, and think instead that usage in a "real" situation is all that matters. but really that stuff goes on in your mind whether you do it consciously or not (in things natural enough to you at least) and it's quite important in learning and maintaining that knowledge, being prepared, all that.

>On a more serious note here's a slightly different approach to learning Japanese for reading VNs:

>Usually people who watch anime a lot will actually have some level of listening skills - that should get you into reading VNs which are close to fully voiced without having issues understanding things when combined with a week or two of hirogana/katakana memorization, pick your target VN after that (Hanahira's a good example)

>Then read Ixrec's Guide to Japanese (http://amaterasu.tindabox.net/guide/j-comi.php) fully then apply it for each sentence in the VN and focus on BDT each sentence into pieces in your head combined with your favorite text extraction program (Use romanji display to help out those pesky Engrish Katakanas) - it'll be slow to start since your available vocab will be pretty low - BDT will help you learn to extract the important information from each sentence combined with text extraction program for vocab.

>The next step up from that is building up vocab - some people say dont' rely on romanji but it seems to be a good starting point than to face the kanjis - this is so that you can comprehend in an efficient manner by recognising romanjis. Eventually you'll recognise common words and you should be less reliant on the romanjis and more on the actual hirogana/katakana/kanjis shapes. Some point down the track you want to turn off Romanji display and see if you are hanging in there.

>Remember the Kanji is somewhat useful in the vocab stage - so if you do run into the kanjis you can make a reasonable guess as to what it means, and move on.

Normies like to use textbook-based methods, "learn" from liberal arts colleges, buy snake-oil methods like pimsleur and rosetta stone, or take 2 years to learn kanji. Naturally, they consider N1 nearly impossible. If you look around various forums, you'll see a considerable amount of words have been spent rationalizing about not being able to pass it.

My favourite is the one about how "even natives couldn't pass it!" and the one that goes like "it uses archaic grammar you don't even need".

I think their main problem, beyond all the textbook stuff, is that normies genuinely and truly believe that moving to Japan and speaking a lot is the best way to learn the language. So even in the best of cases, they end up learning only high colloquial Japanese, and thus have a far too low vocabulary (and far too little experience reading) to pass N1.
>>
>>139369500
>tfw normies
Do you think that without textbook and having guidance, it's possible for people to reach N1 in 2 years without committing 24/7 to learn like /djt/?
It takes me 1 and a half year to reach N2 equivalent level right now. Did you get N1? If yes then how long?

>It literally takes less than 3 months to burn through RTK's 3000 kanji at 40 cards a day

While 2 years is obviously too long, that's not really realistic either. Anyone can burn through them fast if they just want to get them done, but if you actually want to learn and memorize them to a decent degree then practically no one can do 40 new ones per day.
>>
>>139369821
They're reading textbooks. They don't study vocabulary at anywhere near the level the typical DJT user does. They usually spend a long time using tools like pimsleur, rosetta stone, Duolingo, or memerise to study the same things over and over again without really learning them. They never amass any significant amount of vocabulary or grammar.
>>
>>139369560
>normies genuinely and truly believe that moving to Japan and speaking a lot
That is literally the case for any language though. Of course moving won't do shit if you're not exposed to it. Knew shitloads of Eastern Europeans who spent nearly a decade working in Ireland and still barely being able to speak coherent English. They all act very suprised when they see their kids pick up the language within a year. It's only natural when their entire workplace is Populated by poles and they all speak Russian all day.
>>
>>139370066

>>
>>139370099
The way you worded "normies believe" made it seem like you implied that it's a myth though.
>>
>>139370142
I mean, it is a myth in the sense that its not's a necessary course of action that people believe is necessary. The trick isn't moving to the country, its simple exposure to the language you can get anywhere.
>>
>>139370199
Oh yeah I agree that some people use it as an excuse. It is the best form of exposure though. Which is where the dumb rationalisation comes from. "I am not getting the best learning experience therefore I am wasting my time and can't learn the language".

I think it's a pretty nuanced topic. I would say for at least a year or so, books and TV/radio/etc are better forms of exposure simply because they can be consumed more constructively. 40 a day isn't much of a problem with solid mnemonics if you're solely going for recognition. Community mnemonics in particular are highly effective. I finished the deck below in just under 11 weeks at this rate a year or so ago, and I had a young card retention rate of above 90%, with mature cards at 99%.
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/2438776091

Production is another matter. Personally, I don't believe learning to write kanji is worth the time and effort. It's an archaic skill that doesn't really serve any purpose in a digital society.

To pass N1 in only 2 years you need to commit a huge amount of time. It's a lot of information to memorize and not a lot of time, no matter what you do.

The whole point of mnemonics is that you come up with them yourself so that you can make them something that's memorable to you personally.

But that seems like a lot of work, I think there must be some mnemonic for little Japanese 日本人 that are native to 日本, they should be better than Western mnemonics.

It's more work trying to memorize someone else's mnemonics because it'll take you much longer to remember things. There is no method that won't involve effort, you're in the wrong neighborhood if that's what you're after.

Not everyone is terrible at learning like Jamal here, the use of mnemonics has been around for centuries.

>They make the material more meaningful by adding associations and creating patterns. In fact, mnemonics work better for material that is less meaningful.

>They help organize the information so that you can more easily retrieve it later. By giving you associations and cues, mnemonics allow you to cross-reference the information in different parts of your memory. This mental structure is very useful for material that has very little inherent organization.

>Mnemonics typically involve visualizations that help make the facts more vivid. This is especially helpful for people who are visual learners. Additionally, these visualizations help focus your attention on the material by making the learning more interesting.

A lot of people come in here whining about laziness and whatnot, but shit dude, that's your personal problem. That's you being spineless, or weak. Grow up! Read Yotsuba and hanahira a second time if need be. Get a clue. Laziness doesn't have a cure. It's all in your head. You just have to buckle up. And if you can't, get out of here! You're done.

So it's time to get out the Grammar Hammer and nail those little bastards down.

You can do just RTK book 1, and not 3 if you're lazy / don't care about uncommonish / name kanji.

They tend to be helpful though because they're exactly the type of kanji you don't see often enough to get a good grasp on them via reading.
>>
>>139374374
No. You should feel free to skip the train and mail words too, you will never see them again unless you go to a Japanese train station and/or post office.
>>
>>139374588
>Why does Heisig cover 3k Kanji?
Because he could make money by making a volume with 1000 extra kanji, and because some people want it

> are the extra 1k super important?
Many of them are used, but it doesn't even take 2000 to get to the point where kanji aren't "scary" anymore at which point it's better to just learn them as you come across them. You an still learn to write them as you come across them if you want, just take a quick look through RTK3 to see what new radicals he introduces.

I'm starting to think ハイペリオン is harder than LOGH. I've just read the first chapter of each, but the main difference between them, is that whereas LOGH is reasonable and once you look up the words you can think "yeah if I read more I'd know that, it's a word I need to know in the grand scheme of things", ハイペリオン seems crazy unreasonable, I come across stuff like 虹蜉蝣, 癭瘤, etc, and it's like, rather than feeling as if my Japanese is improving, I feel more like an encroaching despair that Japanese is impossible and I have a decade of studying before me before I can even scratch the doorknob of Japanese fluency.

40 kanji production cards a day is a pretty significant investment. That's probably 2 hours a day if you're writing them either with your finger or with a pen (which you should, since doing RTK and not physically writing the kanji is a waste. No, mnemonics are not enough to internalize the stroke order). Not really reasonable to expect that especially when most people want to actually improve at Japanese instead of doing full autist methods.

>>139370480
Oh nevermind, you were just dong recognition. In that case it's more reasonable. Trying to learn to write kanji (and using bad methods to do so) is probably one of the bigger ways normies waste time

I went through RTK production type cards, at a 50~100 kanji per day clip (I got antsy at the end + upped it to 100 cards to finish faster).

It took several hours a day, but honestly wasn't that bad. If you learn them in chunks of 10 kanji at a time, and spread out the reviews throughout the day it's not so bad. I was able to learn basic grammar + some vocab at the same time that way.

Almost immediately I noticed how much easier it was to pick up vocab when it used kanji I was "familiar" with, the RTK keywords acting as mnemonics themselves.

It's definately one of the slower routes, but your knowledge is very thorough + learning actual vocab is painless. Putting the "hard slow part" in the beginning makes it super easy to transition into reading actual compelling content, instead of it being a giant fight the whole way.
