How am I supposed to learn kanji in the beginning? I'm a few days into anki and anything past the numbers just seems like memorizing shapes.
I can get meaning pretty fast but the readings are really difficult. Am I just supposed to hit again over and over until it clicks? Which I have no problem doing but with low new card number like 20 its taking me almost 2 hours to get through with reps.
>>
With all the shitty beginner questions flooding in in the recent weeks and the spammer admitting to flooding the threads with fake questions I'm really wary about answering any of them.

Q: How to learn kanji
A: There are a variety of choices, you just have to fucking do something. If you just want to learn words, get a vocabulary recognition deck (that means the japanese word is on the front, and meaning is on the back). If you want to memorize radicals, but not kanji, get the Kangxi Radicals deck. If you want to memorize both, do RTK. If you want to memorize only kanji, grab the ichi.moe deck.

Depends on what you mean by "far." In short, no, 3 months is not long enough to be competent in the language. However, you don't need to be fully competent in order to begin enjoying media, as texthookers can bootstrap you into levels above your own. At any rate, it's foolish to try to rush yourself to achieve some (?) level in 3 months, because all that will happen is you'll burn yourself out before you even get to really enjoy the language.

But okay, what would you know after 3 months of 3 hours a day?

Let's do vocabulary first: it really depends on your speed, but let's say an hour means doing 35 new words a day, along with all of your reviews. After 90 days you'll have 3,150 cards in your deck.

Then, let's assume you don't start reading until you finish Tae Kim. So you spend two hours a day reading Tae Kim until you finish it. Let's say you'd finish it in about a week and a half, though again it would depend on your speed. Already then you know enough grammar to start reading, and I'll be generous and say you dive right into it, even though you only know 350 words.

Then, to continue your grammar education, let's say instead of doing 2 hours of reading a day, you do 1.5 hours of reading and 30 minutes of the DoJG deck. I'll make another assumption and say you do 7 new cards a day of the DoJG deck. For your grammar education, then, after three months, you'll have done all of Tae Kim and all three of the DoJG volumes.

(1/2)
>>
>>139314504
>>139315819
For the remaining time, 1.5 hours a day for the 80 days after you finish Tae Kim, you will read. It amounts to 120 hours of reading. How much would you have read in that time? Well, I don't know because it's subjective and it's not like I've ever seen people timing themselves.

Basically, then, after three months, you'll know 3,150 words, have read all of Tae Kim and DoJG, and have done 120 hours of reading. Altogether you'll have spent 270 hours studying Japanese.

This site lists approximate vocabulary counts and number of hours of study for different JLPT levels: http://www.tanos.co.uk/jlpt/aboutjlpt/. 3,150 pieces of vocabulary puts you close to but not quite N3. If you do finish all of Tae Kim and DoJG, your grammar knowledge would be somewhat advanced, however, you may not be able to fluently recognize the grammar constructions yet since you only have 3 months of reading under your belt. 270 hours is about N4 according to that site, though I think it’s quite possible they’ve overestimated how long it would take.

In short, if you trust the numbers on that site and for some reason care about the JLPT, you’d probably be between N4 and N3. But, I don’t know why’d you set some arbitrary limit like “I have to get to x limit in 3 months,” because Japanese isn’t something you learn in three months. It’s just isn’t. If you don’t intend to spend more than 3 months on the language you should probably just spend your time on something you’re more interested in.

I can read all this shit. I really struggle when I read some manga about Yakuza or this small paperbacks for high school girls but this seems super easy. School related stories use easier words I guess. Makes sense since the plot is mostly limited to school and home activites whereas Yakuza stories are about 人身売買, 口径, 闇市場 and other words which I've never used in real life

It's fine, setting it to "Viewing" mode seems to completely get rid of the graffiti so it's not the end of the world.

How come there's a new guide, anyway? I haven't been to these threads for a while.
>>
i've been doing core, studying grammar, doing the little reading i can (slowly going through よつばと! and other various little things). but i've been getting sort of tired of core. some words i find interesting and memorable on their own, but others are boring or not presented well, and combined with the fact that i didn't make the cards myself, they're basically contextless. i feel that it makes them unnecessarily difficult to memorize. i'm really not good at reading yet, really basic stuff i can read fine but anything above pretty damn basic and i have to slowly reference my grammar book and look words up and shit. i'm wondering how "safe" it would be to drop core in favor of doing lots of reading/listening and filling up my own mining deck.
i would probably make core not give any new cards and just continue to review it for a bit, while i add cards to a mining deck.
so, please tell me what you think about this kind of thing, and tell me about at what point you started using a mining deck, and if you dropped core, everything related to that.

>>139320766
oh, nice timing
>>
>>139320985
The old guide was quite long winded, didn't really tell people that much about what to actually do (hence the "I read up to here..." Part in the new guide) and wasn't very balanced when it came to learning Kanji.

The new guide aims to fix these things and be a bit more accessible to newcomers. The same could probably have been achieved by overworking the old guide, but I found that this would be more work and yield less good results than building a new one from ground up, based on the old guide with lots of community input.

On that note, feel free to leave some feedback either in the feedback form, the guide or right here.

>>139321048
I'm pretty sure virtually everyone here would agree that's the best course of action. Core should mostly be used as a "I didn't mine very many cards today so I'm going to do a few new cards from core to make up for it" sort of thing.
>>
>>139321084
>and wasn't very balanced when it came to learning Kanji.
I disagree, I feel the new guide is far too biased against learning kanji through vocab, which is generally agreed to be the more efficient approach. Normally people only recommend specialised kanji study for those with circumstances that require them to learn to handwrite, or those who for some reason especially struggle with learning kanji. In most cases pure vocab study is superior, and the new guide doesn't reflect this.

If you have some suggestion as to how to make that section more bslanced, I'd be very glad to receive it.

Personally, I've had great experiences with learning kanji individually (my vocab retention went up to almost 95%) hence I don't believe that learning through vocab is necessarily superior. They're both valid methods and the learner should decide for himself which method to use.

I am aware of the fact that a certain bias may reflect in that section due to my personal experience on the matter. Hence, I'm especially glad about suggestions, comments and feedback on that section since the goal for it is to not vontain a bias towards any of the methods presented.

Talking in incorrect japanese to people who can't correct your mistakes is a bad idea, Anon.
>>
ワンクッション
>>
>>139321352
That's not bad. I live in Osaka and some of my friends are brazillian who don't speak English but Japanese (better than me). It's helpful because you have to think how do you use your Japanese. Even when I speak with my Japanese friends they don't often correct me because it's bad for the communication when people tell you in every second sentence what might be better. And it's more fun to talk freely instead of getting teached to use に in this sentence instead of を. My opinion doe, maybe some other /a/nons prefer to get tought how to speak
>>
>>139321289
I suggest you relook over the section, as it's clearly exceedingly biased.

- length: the vocab section is shorter than the others and less detailed.
- positivity: the kanji sections contain positive phrases like "will be a great help in learning kanji", while the vocab section contains negative phrases like "The drawback to this method", "while not as strong as".
- focus: while the kanji sections maintain focus on their topic, the vocab section deviates into off-topic, out of place radical discussion.
- ordering: learning through vocab is placed at the end.
- implication of superiority: the summary literally says kanji study gives "in return for better retention later.", clearly attempting to imply kanji study is in the long term superior, when that is patently untrue for most people, although not all.

If you can't figure out the meaning of the phrase from its components automatically then you should add the whole thing.

If you don't know the components themselves, and they're something that are used in contexts other than the specific saying in question, then you should obviously add those separately as well.

If you have issues with retention you can try adding a new step at like 60m or something, and just coming back later in the day to get a second look at the cards. That is, you don't have to press again if you don't know them at that stage.

I have around 90% correct young cards and 99% correct mature cards with the default settings at 40 new cards a day. The actual learning cards percentage is less than 70% due to always hitting again on each and every new card to start with.

Might start out with the 10m good option from now on to avoid doing twice the new card reviews for no reason when there's no problem with retention.

>>
>>139330707
One problem is that Muramasa has such a high density of rare words that his studying will be thrown out of balance. Instead of reading works with progressively higher vocabulary levels, and thus building off what he already knows, he's just dumping all of it on himself at once. Arguably same end result, but a much harder and less constructive time of reaching it.

What's the point of learning another language?

As the lingua franca of the world, if you know English then you already have access to pretty much everything that the white world (I was going to say "western world" to be more politically correct, but then I remembered that Russia exists) has produced since there is no white book, game, movie, etc, that's worth reading/watching that either wasn't originally in English or hasn't already been translated to English.

As far as the rest of the world goes, Japan is pretty much the only eastern country that produces anything worth reading. China and South Korea are just soulless factories, India is literally covered in shit, Africa isn't even worth acknowledging, the middle east is a perpetual fucking disaster, and Southeast Asia is just pathetic jungle asians. Japan is unique because they produce interesting content and they're isolated enough that a lot of it doesn't get translated.

There's no reason to learn anything other than English or Japanese unless you need to learn it for travel or work purposes.

Its hard to enjoy the process when reading is less of a "learning" process and more of a "oh fuck a word I don't know gotta look it up" process. Not intense enough to feel like studying, but not smooth enough to be fully leisurely. I mean, yeah its enjoying the process in the sense that I like reading the VNs or what, but I'm really not enjoying the process of constantly having reading interrupted if that makes sense. Knowing barely anything is a better place to be in the context of straight up learning and enjoying the process, because its a lot easier to learn in the first place.
>>139334876
I try to keep reading English novels regularly because if there's anything learning Japanese has proven to me its that those who read a lot know more and have larger vocabularies which is something that appeals to me.

Not that I'd know any better, but I imagine that's the sort of fluency you only get from using the language frequently, like from living there and having to deal with it on the fly.

>>
>>139335041
Yeah, there's one big SECRET which is basically just common sense; when you don't know a Japanese word/kanji, look up the definition in Japanese instead of English.

Seriously, such an easy trick and most people don't do this. It's also how I learned English, when I didn't know an English word I'd look up the definition in English instead of my native language. The sooner you remove everything non-Japanese from your studies, the better.
>>
>>139335041
Read, read, read, listen, read, listen, speak and listen some more.
Eventually your brain will stop translating the information that you're getting in japanese into information of your dominant language.

This. You can't achieve that without living at least 10-15 years in Nippon.

It was just 24 hours. It expired about 30 minutes ago. Hopefully this won't get me banned since it's just answering a question.
I just find it funny that people laugh at the idea of learning Japanese when I honestly can't think of any language other than Japanese or English that is worth learning. I'm just talking about worth in terms of having access to high quality content that would otherwise remain untranslated though.

I'm trying to think of another language since it's hard to believe that only two languages cover the overwhelming majority (possibly the entirety since I'm including translations) of everything that's worth reading, but I can't think of anything.

You fell for a meme method of learning. If using a J-J dictionary makes a significant difference in the amount of Japanese input you have, you aren't reading enough. If you can't understand the definitions, it is actively hurting you.

Years is equally meaningless though. Hours is the only thing that's accurate since one person's idea of four years studying Japanese might be another person's idea of two years if the first person puts in four hours a day and the second puts in eight.

>>139335582
I mean, it's within an order of magnitude of the usual amount needed.
>>

I was waiting for someone to point that out.

At a normal pace, you won't learn Japanese to native level fluency within 4 years. If you go too slow, the figure is meaningless, and if you go too fast, you'll "finish" faster than four years.. but by and large, an average pace will take 4 years minimum. For native level fluency that is.

I disagree with the last piece of criticism. People who do individual kanji study will almost always have higher retention as a result of it, so I don't think there's anything wrong with saying that individual kanji study = higher retention, it's just that the higher retention is sort of compensation for the time you spent on kanji study and allows you to go at a faster pace with vocab without suffering retention issues. In the long run they're probably about equal, maybe with individual kanji study edging out a tiny bit along with having the benefit of being able to handwrite (at least individual kanji). I have a hard time believing most people would get better results with pure vocab if they want a strong grasp on the words they're learning in terms of recognition.

It took me almost 2 years to really get all the kanji (3000~) down via vocab, through gradually mining them as they came, and when I did it changed the face of studying so profoundly I can't help but think wow, maybe RTK/individual kanji study isn't all that bad. Which is a really awkward position to old because of the heavy anti-kanji study bias here. I think its a shame that there will never be true peace on this subject because if RTK were more freely recommended there would probably be more better results. I think the creation of a RTK plus Core deck would be very valuable as a middle ground. Not sure how something like that could be made though.

>Hours is the only thing that's accurate since one person's idea of four years studying Japanese might be another person's idea of two years if the first person puts in four hours a day and the second puts in eight.

This is not entirely true, especially if you use things like anki. Things take time to set in and there are very real diminishing returns. That isn't to say that more isn't better, but someone putting in 2 hours a day for1 years will be much better than someone putting in 4 hours a day for 6 months, just because the former will have had a year for everything they learned in the first year to solidify
>>

>I think the creation of a RTK plus Core deck would be very valuable as a middle ground.

>>
>>139336144
Maybe I'm still scarred from the RTK wars of '14 but my impression is that the general stance is that RTK is a waste of time. It bleeds into every discussion on this subject.
>>
>>139335969
Maybe slightly right from the center.
I dropped Fate/HA, tried reading it after reading a few easier VNs but Nasu's writing is fairly verbose. Neither his grammar nor his vocab is super hard (though a bit harder than average), but along with NVL style wall of texts and fairly long average sentence lengths, if your reading speed is not up to par it can be extremely tedious.
>>
>>139336210

Keep in mind that at the point where you consider youself to have 3000 kanji down through vocab, you also have a very good sense for guessing which reading is used in a word and have a much better sense for what the kanji mean than you would have had right out of RTK. Someone jumping into reading from RTK has yet to deal with all the "若人? The fuck is that reading"
>>
>>139336057
There will pretty much never be a generally agreed upon stance because everyone gets their "best" results from different things and they think the path they took is the "general opinion" and not understanding how the other methods can work for people, like people who don't understand how mnemonics as memory aids work or people not understanding that some just have better visual memory and learning radicals is enough to never mix up really similar kanji. There isn't a "best" method and there pretty much never will be, but that won't stop people from arguing that their method is better.

The problem with the RTK vs Vocab War is that it seemed like nobody read RTK1 introduction. Studying kanji individually does not mean RTK1.

Heisig in the book stated that the goal of RTK1 is for attaining proficiency in writing the characters and associating their meanings with their forms. Heisig also said that RTK2 is a companion to RTK1, in that RTK2 simplify the study of the reading of the characters.

Today, every kanji book not named RTK covers kanji by teaching the basic meaning (like RTK1), on-yomi, kun-yomi, and example words (like RTK2).

Maybe in 1970s RTK1 was unique in how it presents the order of the kanji today. That is not true today, a lot of kanji books out there use their own orders to simplify the study too.

So "Studying Kanji Individually" means learning the basic meaning(s) of each of the kanji.

For beginners, given the same amount of study hours in a period, for example say, a 120 hours in 3 months period.

The advantage of delving exclusively into vocabs is that the absolute number of multi-kanji word vocabs the learners would have learned in that first 120 hours of study will be a lot more than the learners that studied kanji individually. Let's say with the rate of 20 words a day, they might have learned 3,000 words in that period.

In comparison, learners who "study kanji individually" at the rate of 5 kanji per day, will probably barely just learned 350-500 basic kanji. If they use a kanji book and not RTK1, by then they'd know 1,400-2,000 words at most from the book.

Quantity-wise that is a big difference. That is why in absolute number, delving straight into vocabulary have an edge.

The advantage of studying kanji individually comes from the ability to identify each kanji's basic meanings. So that when learners encounter multi-kanji words they've never see, ideally they should be able to identify each kanji meanings, and derived the meaning of that multi-kanji word.

Both have it's advantages.
