At first he was mad about being 'found out' that he's as bad as the rest of them. In Choromatsu Rising, Totty berates him for always announcing plans he doesn't see through, and he's in a pit of denial for a bit. In the Kamimatsu skit, he finally admitted himself that he was no good. And finally, he gave up a free pass to stay and wither away life in the Dayon tribe, and was left with no option but to face the real world.

I've recently heard that the Choromatsu rising episode might have been a foreshadowing of him realizing that he and his brothers were living in a fantasy world. The only way to get out of that fantasy world was to move on into reality. In that same episode it's shown that Oso's self-awareness orb is the smallest which could show that he's the deepest in this fantasy world and doesn't want it to end

Personally, I think it's gonna end like that South Park episode where when Stan finally decides to accept reality, it all goes back to normal at the very last second

As for fic, most people round these parts blanch at the idea of reading fanfiction (even though they like fanart and doujin). The only one I'd recommend is Requiem for a Regrettable Romance because it's well written, funny (humor feels like a bit of an extension of the show at times) and it's about the Matsu bros being shitheads and sexually incompetent.
