I do volunteer work with some organisations where they encourage kids with "geek" interests to find friends, so it doesn't bother me. I've been in the local paper for it a few times and in cosplay before. Luckily most people are only interested in what positive aspects there are.

I don't go around talking in Japanese and using ~san at the end of everyone's name but I have anime related wallpaper on my phone and shit.
I even have a charm on my phone of Chika.
The only time I've really down played it was when my older sister was randomly googling anime and asking who the girl with "the big boobs" is, I think she thinks anime is a single show rather than an entire medium.
