And the content of his novels suggests he actually spends significant time on research.

The Index anime rushed through a large amount of material, skipping out on a lot of things in the process. Meanwhile the Railgun anime is half filler arcs.

As for the translation quality, I remember the first novels being somewhat poor but as soon as you reach the novels translated by Js06 the quality is pretty good. I'd personally still advise starting at volume 1 though.

the novels post v1 are treated as separate adventures with loose continuity. you can jump in to v4 right after watching episode 22.

the anime adapted 3 volumes in 22 episodes so the adaptation quality is higher than most ln adaptations, but there are worldbuilding tidbits that either got cut or condensed, which again since the volumes are self contained, it's not the end of the world if you dont know them.

You should watch the anime (both seasons of index) and the railgun spinoff while you're at it.

Once you finish that, start with volume 14 (or 'SS2', which goes over the last episode and half of the second season into more detail and introduces an important character). Volume 15 is where shit hits the fan.

I wouldn't start with volume 1. Translation is great for volumes 13-14 and beyond.

As for the external control, there is an earlier gen 1 object called Assault Signal that had a remote control function, and some of it's features were transferred to the baby magnum. I suppose that's how that external control loophole was used.

Just from this one episode there is a smattering of ideas seen in later novels, from the assault signal thing to the 6th branch and psychological warfare against elites. I can forgive them for the wire bullshit.
