Best dialogue of any anime with more than one season. If your friend is complaining that anime is shallow and inane, lacking in substantive moral or metaphore, show them Monogatari.

I know there are plenty of examples of more intelligently written shows, but they invariably only ever have one season. As far as popular and impactful long-running shows go, Monogatari is the most palletable to someone who may already have very negative presuppositions.

I compare it to some of Quentin Tarantino's movies, in the way that you can often have 10 minute long segments of characters simply having a conversation in a room, with nothing else happening, but it isn't boring at all. The writting itself is good enough to keep you on the edge of your seat.

It's a surrealist harem. Like any proper harem, you are supposed to be able to self insert into Araragi-san. But unlike most harem, there is a strong surrealist undercurrent.

There isn't much more to *monogatari. It's a harem. With surreal elements. It's a one of a kind type of show, though it is not particularly well made, nor it is a masterpiece.

It is an anime about different animal related oddities revolving around 9 girls. The MC spends most of his time trying to resolve the issues with said oddities. The anime is a harem and as such does entice some fan-service but does so in a deep and complex way.
