i found a japanese indies rapper who actually has autism (diagnosed), and i just want to bump him for all the autistic people who post on djt

when your posting is at its worst and youre making a fool of yourself, just know that theres people on the other side of the world with the same struggles as you and that even though youre different from everyone else, you can still find your way

But maybe I'll go read a couple news articles. Speaking of which, does anyone know if theres some way to set the google newsstand app to get Japanese articles?

Probably the easiest LN of all I've read.
That may be partly because all LNs I've read previously were narrated by a smartass MC going on convoluted long ass tangents every other sentence, here Kazuma just does straightforward banter so it's a very simple and fast read.

Why is Japanese rap music so cringey to listen to?

Nice. I've never read a LN, so I'll probably give it a try soon. If I'm moege level, would that probably be fine, or should I at least read one or two VNs that have shared setting-related vocab first?

シリアでは、政府と、政府に反対する人たちやIS=イスラミックステートなどとの戦争が続いています。

Don't forget that in /djt/, most people criticize each other as a way to boost your learning. Just because you think (and /djt/ makes you think) that you're crap at Japanese doesn't mean that it's the case. What we call here a beginner (after I don't know, one year) is often times way better than a Japanese major that has been studying Japanese extensively for three years. While it's great to push yourself, it's important at times to reflect back on your progress and see how far you traveled.

Due to the existence of English subtitles, I don't even bother learning japanese at first. Even though a lot of anime these days are advertisements of LN, I'm good enough to stop at the anime final episode without wanting to read more.

Until one goddamn anime made me can't stand the final episode just ending there and have to pick-up the VN. So I learned japanese again.

What is it? Mine is femdom where the girl actually stays dom the whole time but doesn't do pegging or much cbt (even better if the girl doesn't seem like that type of girl at all outside of her route), but it seems that it isn't incredibly common even if you include nukige.

There's about 10-15 different people the accounts are spread across, but for the most part it's really just a matter of if something gets taken down some anon can re-upload it if the maintainer of that account isn't there and the new link can get added to the spreadsheet. The mega accounts aren't really actively logged into. Hell, I doubt anyone has logged into theirs after submitting their links to the CoR.

Basically, outside of the initial setup of the spreadsheet, it's basically just a group effort of people submitting links to be added.

The pinnacle of it is a proper girl forced into embarrassing situations by unavoidable circumstances which isn't really covered anywhere outside of 全裸登校 series. More broad would be plain old exhibitionism, which is why I'm going through sol-fa-soft games now.

I know this isn't really that relevant but I want to start practising translating shit, is it normal to just pick any random untranslated doujin off of gehentai or exhentai, translate it and just upload the translated version back up on there?

I don't really know anything about the world of fan translating and I like to have a clear idea of what I'm doing before I do it, thanks, sorry for the barely relevant question
>>
>>138715780
Not sure what you're basing that off but most people will read what they think is good regardless of whether it's been translated, and if they like a developer of course they'll want to read more by them. Anything else is arbitrarily lowering the quality of what you read for no reason.

It was so bad it was removed from VNDB. Don't think it's too relevant. If anything Hanahira is a good example otherwise but HH was deep in DJT lore far before it got translated.
>>
>>138716205
>>138716244
Assuming so, the reason is likely just because translated vns get rated higher on vndb, so people assume they're getting that rating without deserving it and want to search for vns rated highly regardless. Not because they innately hate the idea of reading a VN with a translation, because that makes no sense.

>>138716465
Yeah, fair enough. I guess the point of my post was more that while the question does pop up, it's rare enough that you have just as many people talking about wanting to read a VN that has an English TL. Hell, a Steins;Gate's difficulty got brought up in this very thread and I see mentions of Grisaia, F/sn, and a few other "babby's first" TL'd VNs get brought up fairly often.
>>
>>138716492
I'd say your logic makes less sense, frankly... not only are VNDB rankings worthless to begin with, translated VNs get ranked highly because good VNs tend to get translated, that's it.
>>
>>138716620
The difference between Steins;Gate, Grisaia, F/SN, etc and KoiChoco is that the former are all plotge with unique aspects, whereas KoiChoco is a generic moege with literally nothing going for it except a somewhat unique art style.
>>
>>138716680
Hey, I'm not questioning the dude's tastes, just trying to find a plausible explanation / more just addressing the matter of people avoiding or not avoiding VNs that have TLs in general. I do agree that he should go for AoKana if he's interested in reading a Sprite game though.

I though that being better at Japanese would make me hate pretentious authors less, but it actually exacerbated the feeling.

Writing 有難う with kanji, other than a bunch of other needlessly formal forms, using verbal forms no sane person would use even speaking to the emperor, but in normal conversations between young people, and generally acting like they're the godsend of literature to us common mortals, while writing bottom of the barrel eroge.

Goddamnit I hate chuuni authors so damn much. In the past it made me angry because it made me unable to read, now I hate it because even though I can perfectly understand their writing, it just reeks of pretentiousness.

How to achieve good listening practice:
Step 1: Play grindy repetitive game (runescape or vanilla wow)
Step 2: Listen to reptitive anime in the background (pokemon, precure, etc.)
Step 3: Do this for extended periods of time (10+ hours per day)
The advantage that this has over just listening is the last step. The game keeps your hands busy, and the anime keeps your mind busy, allowing you to do it together for extremely long periods of time without breaks. Just listening for 10 hours is a much harder feat to do consistently. It works especially good if your reading comprehension is above your listening (which is most people here). Unfortunately this doesn't really work for reading.

I'd say it does as long as you're reading along and not tuning the audio out, but even then you could just only turn the subs on when you need to look something up / just not look at the subs. At the very least it'd be much more time efficient method of improving your listening comprehension than passively getting listening practice with repetitive low-difficulty shows while playing video games.

I generally don't "memorize edict definitions" unless the meaning isn't something you could accurately guess from the kanji. Generally seeing it in context and knowing the kanji well enough makes vocab meanings pretty trivial, I mostly use Anki for readings and for outliers / rare kanji. Just more efficient than pure reading for me and I don't mind putting the time into it to gain that efficiency.

I think the Firefox texthooking setup that has been gaining traction here is a nice compromise on the whole texthooking situation, though. As long as you don't install Mecab, it's pretty much just raw text with a dictionary, no texthooker handholding with furigana and grammar parsing. Still requires a degree of self control to not over-use though.

Just keep using anki. Really.

Not to say you can't make lots of progress without anki. You can even get to upper-intermediate pretty easily without anki. But when it comes to remembering those kanji you only see at most once in a VN or those vocab that you see at most once every 5 VNs, anki is key.

I remember the reason why it becomes popular now is because a kind anon wrote a custom code for html auto-scroll for another anon.
Then that one anon pays the kindness forward by letting others know about that method here on djt.

It's just the timing of when the auto-scroll custom code was available to general public I think. If the method was widely known before this particular period, it would've been popular even from then too.

The only way to go about it if there's no furigana is guess. A natural reaction of a Japanese person trained by decades of reading martial arts manga would be to read that using their regular onyomi.

>>138719096
Sorry, I misread what you said and listed the J-J dictionaries that I use with rikaisama. I've really preferred weblio.jp for its straightforward yet effective definitions. Other than that, stuff is usually explained on yahoo answers.

dictionary.goo.ne.jp/ also works.

>>138718909
Yes, interpreting the word from how the kanji is constructed is several times better than relying on some definition in english presented before you. If somebody uses anki, I'd just suggest using it for J-J definitions even if it's more of a hassle to memorize.

Just reading and looking up stuff has been the most efficient thing I've done. You're maximizing the time spent trying to familiarize yourself with the structure and arrangement of words in several different kinds of context. It goes much further than to learn the single meaning of a word with multiple definitions that are all entirely based on context.

I don't think that the J-J combination can exactly be 'overused', given that you'll always be looking up words in J-J once you become more familiar with the language, but there is a need (like I mentioned earlier) to practice reading without any kind of support. Not that you'll maximize your gains, because looking up words will become a slower process but this is just for the sake of practicing something you should be doing in the future.

>>138718946
Yes, but you can easily fall into the trap of relying on a dictionary that doesn't provide any real clarity to the definition of the word that you're looking up.

Like I mentioned earlier, the only way to practice reading without using tools is to actually do it. J-J isn't something you can 'overuse' (refer to my previous few paragraphs directed towards another anon) so there's no demerit to making use of them. You just need to make time to read stuff without tools eventually - It comes down to how you allocate your time, how much reading experience you have and how much you can read everyday.
>>
So, RTK/KD first or just Core 2k/6k/10k and radicals from the start?
>>

Fair enough and well thought out reply, I just don't really want to make the switch to J-J for my cards yet and words that I actually need the definition for aren't incredibly common the first lookup. Especially with context. I mostly use anki for solidifying kanji readings, rare kanji, or outliers that I'm not going to see often enough in reading to help me as effectively as anki+reading. I can always go back and feed my deck to Epwing2Anki to add J-J definitions later on, though.

As >>138719596 said, it depends on if you want to write or not as well has how hard of a time you're having with distinguishing similar looking kanji. If a radicals deck isn't enough for you, then consider individual kanji study, yeah. Plus most forms of kanji study include a keyword that can help with guessing vocab and some decks have example vocab or readings on them.

I disagree. You can still look up words without trying to memorize them with a J-J dictionary. You can still look up words that you could have figured out from context, or could have remembered with a couple seconds thoughts, even if you are using a J-J dictionary.

You're right that you will always need to use some sort of dictionary occasionally, but again you could just as well use EDICT at that point too. And of course, switch to J-J or google for those words that EDICT fails on

Demon Souls in Japanese has been shockingly easy so far. The item descriptions aren't that tough which surprised me a lot. The hardest part is admittedly keeping up with the subtitles - everything is spoken in English, even the character dialogue, which was a surprise, I thought it was just the opening movie. But no, Japanese subtitles and English narration for everything. Really really frickin' weird.

Oh yeah, and I'm confused as to what 楔 means in 楔の神殿 (english name: The Nexus). Haven't seen 楔 enough while reading I guess. I looked it up but best I could think of is a wedge-shaped temple which fits with the shape (pic related). Weird title though.

This is probably the first time I've opened a Medieval-esque RPG and not been BTFO. Feels good. Practice pays off.
>>

>>
So as I'm reading NHK, I've realized that Japanese mixes up past and present tenses in one paragraph quite often. Does somebody has more information on this? Is it for style effect?
>>
>>138720090
Just read them all in 音読み and don't think about right or wrong. Then one day you will eventually know the special readings by accident yourself the more you read japanese materials.

If you found a technique with 乙女, you don't read them "オツ.ジョ" you read them おとめ。
This 風邪 is かぜ, it's not ””フウ.ジャ”. You'll learn them slowly. I don't know anything about 熟字訓 and 義訓 either, but you will encounter these accidentally by reading.

Just read your game 技 with 音読み and don't worry about it.

Your question is beyond the scope of what I know about japanese language so I can't really offer you explanations more than what I'm going to write below.

Japanese verbs does not include tense; They do not indicate the absolute time of the action or state. Instead, they are marked for aspect. Whereas tense says "when" something happens in time, aspect says "how" it happens relative to time- whether it is ongoing, completed, repeated, etc.

Aspects also exist in English, for example, in the distinction between continous and simple verbs. Japanese has two aspects: perfect and imperfect. These terms generally stand for completed vs. ongoing or effective states.

On the other hand, tense in japanese is only understood from context, not from the forms of the verbs themselves.

That's a copy-paste explanation I got from a pdf I accidentally got from some blogs that refer to some website (the pdf source). But I can't remember the website name now.

Try googling it, I hope you can find the website and get better explanations for your question.

1 - The English voiceover was of course included in the game's original release, so just maybe Miyazaki approved of the differences. I have no idea if he knows English though, can't find anything on google.
2 - "You've got a heart of gold" is a VERY famous and popular line from the series, and no doubt is far more popular (and made people like the character) more than "You're a good person" would have.

The English dialogue in souls games is peculiar because it wasn't a localization.
The game is voiced in English to give it that western fantasy flavor that feels mysterious to Japs, most of the English dialogue was written in a way to make it harder for the average Japanese to understand.
They can't go and write those lines straight since that would sound like easily recognizable textbook English so they had to go with more flowery phrasing for them.
I doubt it's Miyazaki himself but they sure have some internal English writers.

Yep, and those accounts are spread across 10-15 people and when the new CoR was being put back together, those people added their links. Beyond that there isn't really any management to do. If a link gets taken down that person can re-upload it or another anon who has it can re-upload it and then it gets re-added.

Except it won't. Listening skills =/= Reading skills, if anything, it's making matter worse because you don't have to get used to some kanji or basic phrases while reading, which will then hinder your reading speed. Stop being an ass, if you want sound, read a VN.

Knowing the kana wouldn't be the problem.
It would be the fact that there would be hundreds of new/existing words that would now use those kana that you'd need to learn.

But since that would reduce the amount of homophones in the language it might, in the long run, make the language easier.

Question about some semantics in part of FSN. English is a gloss of my understanding of the lines.

Tohsaka;
>「あら、肺活量では美綴さんに負けたわよ、わたし。
Ah, I lost to you in lung capacity.
>あと体重も美綴さんのが上だったけど」
But then you beat me in weight, too."
Mitsudzuri:
>「あはははは!やったー、重さで3キロ上回ったー!」
Ahahaha! I did it, I'm three kilos heavier than you!
>「・・・・・・って体重で勝っても嬉しくないってのよこのタヌキ!」
...Look, it's not like I'm happy to go on to win in weight, you fox!

My question is here:
>って体重で勝っても

Is this

{{...}(って)体重で勝}(って)も

with the も pulling back on

>あと体重も

? Or did I misunderstand it?

Do Japanese, when looking at writing, actually read or do they just glance and know how to say it just from memory?

For instance, when reading English, for natives or the really fluent, can read sentences made up of words that are scrambled as long as the first and last letter are in their correct position.
>>
>>138728289
the same thing does happen where you get a quick incomplete look at something and your brain fills in the blanks
>>
>>138728289
Your first and second paragraph aren't actually related. Knowing from memory doesn't imply. reading with letter order mixed. By that I mean that a Japanese reader can gloss over a text and 'read it' in his head but not necessarily if the order of kana/kanji is mixed. We'd need some actual studies about that.
