The biggest issue I have with Ranma 1/2 is how it ends like, a couple arcs *too early.*

The story had hit the point where the status quo could no longer continue. But rather then just resolve things, Takahashi ended it.

Take Ranma and Akane's relationship. There wasn't even really a pretence of them denying anything about their feelings. For crying out loud, there's a scene in which Ranma thinks that, to make up for a fight, Akane wants to make out/have sex with him. He's wrong about the current circumstances (Akane's trying to hide him from Nodoka) but Akane's response is "Now's not the time!" Which, uh, implies some things about them off panel.

Then, of course, a handful of plot threads actually get resolved. Ryoga gives up on Akane, and majorly Nodoka finally meets Ranma as a man and accepts him despite his curse.

But then, rather then continue down this path and actually resolve at the very least the other two major issues (Shampoo and Ukyo) the manga just ends.

It's really sad that Ranma and Akane, two characters from an old comedy manga, are a lot more complex and nuanced then most modern anime.

Neither of them fit into any easy archetype slot. Their flaws aren't meant to be cute, and there is real romantic chemistry between then rather then silly contrived blushing and stuttered confessions.

To me it looks like they're both fairly simple gag characters. Ranma is obsessed with being #1 at everything, while Akane is a tsundere. They never show any real character development or any development in their relationship (other than what happens right at the end which just felt really awkward and forced) and their "romance" consists of them bickering like small children and occasionally feeling embarrassed over one another.

This is just one facet of his character though. Like, OK, his pride means that whatever he starts he immediately dives into trying to be the best no matter what and win. (Even when him "winning" would actually be detrimental to him)

Though that doesn't really come into play when, for instance, his oddly girly side even through his constant masculine posturing. Or how he's kind of sneaky even when he doesn't have to be, thinking up "clever" plans to solve problems. Plus he just likes riling up people at times.

A Tsundere hides their feelings under bluster. Their own insecurity about romance manifests in blushing anger and denials.

Akane exhibits none of this. In fact, there's not really any indication that she's in denial period. (If anything that's Ranma) Take, for instance, the archtypical scene of the Tsundere bringing the object of her affection a gift. There's a lot of blushing, stuttering, denials about it being anything special. There are plenty of times in the series where Akane does something for Ranma, trying to help him out, heck even trying to make food for him. She never tries to excuse or deny it.

Personally I can't say I liked any of the girls. Shampoo has the whole determination to murder any woman that bests her, which is not really attractive. Akane is annoying, somewhat violent and in constant denial over her feelings. Ukyo is also very violent; she crashed Ranma's wedding and started throwing bombs around for example. Kasumi is really bland. Nabiki is a sociopath who would sell her own family if she thought it was in her overall interest. Ranma is a manipulative bitch out to exploit those around her when not trying to defeat the challenger of the day. Kodatchi is both crazy and full of herself. Ranma's mom is nuts too; letting her deadbeat husband run off with their child with the agreement that she'd decapitate them if their son wasn't manly made absolutely no sense, much less her determination to carry that agreement out.

The most balanced and relaxed female character in the series was Cologne.
