I really don't get why they don't do this. Toei making a mahou shoujo that alternates between action and slice of life would be pretty much ideal, as they've made both, but not something that's a more even mix. I don't get why they don't given I can't see any issue they'd have scheduling it, and each of the production teams could focus on their strengths outside of the climaxes or parts that involve strong continuity while appealing to all audiences.

I'm specifically suggesting a new series that isn't Precure to avoid that problem.

Toei has done good SoL focused mahou shoujo and series that focus on direct conflict. I don't see what they have to loose by combining the two properly, as it would only free them up to do whatever they wanted depending on circumstance. The characters would hardly be harmed by direct reliance on powers that they use to interact with other people.

Oh, I'm actually all for that. I've been kindasorta calling for Precure to end since they could really refresh their NichiAsa 8:30 timeslot. The formula is getting stale and disaster results whenever they deviate from it, but PRECURE is a household name they can't let go of.

But if they start a new IP, it would have to be some lighthearted, fun idol thing (which they actually have, but we don't know the status of) since that's what is currently making bank from Japanese little girls.

If Mahou Tsukai weren't a Precure show, then it could totally go for a darker tone/atmosphere while still keeping the writing light enough for children. But that won't happen since it will be colorful and fun and the OP song will be the usual.

There really needs to be some breakout mahou shoujo manga from Nakayoshi/Ribon/HanaYume. It's upsetting how the last mahou shoujo anime adapted from a shoujo manga was Shugo Chara! back in 2007... Ribon had Sakura Hime Kaden, but that was shit and Arinacchi is way past her prime. Nakayoshi had some mahou shoujo manga that was canceled in about two years, plus the Tooyama Ema one with the nice art and shit Tooyama writing. HanaYume...I have no idea, though I don't think any of their long runners are magical girls. Higutan serialized this: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-08-02/gakuen-alice-higuchi-starts-anne-no-magomago-tosho-land-manga/.77221 which was canceled within a year.

I haven't watched any of those. They're pretty low priority since I have a backlog of children's shows that interest me more. My friend likes Kurukuru though, and I trust her opinion (though a dance-off she linked to did not inspire much confidence).

What I yearn for is an anime adapted from a shoujo manga aimed toward the younger demographic more than anything. (But not too young. I ignore anything and everything from Ciao.) Those just don't happen nowadays unless they're shilling some specific merchandise (Yumeiro Patissiere) since they'll just be a pointless adaption and fail (Kamichama Karin).

The issue isn't the demographic itself, so much as things that aren't aimed at children tending to pander to otaku specifically. Kid's magical girl shows tend to be great because they're frequently directed by people who honestly want to explore the characters on screen and do interesting things with them and their lives, which the purely seinen shows rarely do in the same fashion. If the late night shows (including things like straight up SoLs) were to do this, and with the same talent behind the children's fare, I wouldn't have much issue. They never do though.
