Holy shit is this real life?
>Being happily surprised about a below average LN
Just because is not another school battle harem doesn´t mean you have to shit your pants over it. Read a real fantasy novel instead.
Please don't redirect people who read genre fiction to /lit/.
How would you feel if people redirected shitters who talk about Naruto to /a/?
More like 99% of written works are garbage, and a good amount of that good 1% comes from Fantasy.
Oh hey, is just like anime! Difference from LN being is easier to find something good. Yes more than a handful.
I mean list 10 LNs that are alright read, story, concept. characters and moral message?
All I can think of:
Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria
Legend of the Legendary Heroes
First act of Shield Hero - barely readable
Spice and Wolf
Kino no Tabi
Welcome to NHK (No pics, but well the list is hard to fill)
Note how I excluded the shitty power fantasy stuff? Because they are shit tier about self masturbation.
what exactly is "genre fiction"? it just seems like fiction that just tries to have a story and doesn't try to have a deeper meaning, at least from what i've seen from offboard /lit/izens.
Guess I should get my smug on too because I've read nonsense like Brave New World and 1984. You're not a intelectual and your taste in books is shit and will always be shit, the fact that you're trying to one up nerds on a fucking anime board tells volumes about just how fucking insecure you are.
Everyone dropped Aldermain like hot coal once Yakitori died.
And nobody's lunatic enough to translate Mismarca, besides js06 I guess, but even he's got his hands full with Kawakami/Kamachi stuff.
I just makes fun of young edgy people who just open world of books but start shitting of everything else and thinking that they're superior being. Just think about anime newfags for example.
Kumoko v1 cover. What the fuck is that pink thing. It barely looks like a spider and Kumoko was a black spider until she turned white.
That novel had 800+ pages. I had to put off reading it since it was such a heavy read. I doubt middle schoolers read anything other than their home work assignment that is at most 2 pages.
Good is subjective since all I want from my reading material is entertainment which LNs offer in spades considering all the dumb stuff that's out there. Getting pretentious over fucking LNs is laughable.
>start reading random LN
>half of the "book" is spent on a shitty poorly written exposition
I'll stick to VNs, manga and anime.
Angry monkey is the thing on the bottom right, man I love those things, a whole species of angry monkeys that swears vengeance if you kill one of them and it doesn't matter where you are because every monkey on the planet is out to get you.
Alaba looks kind of weird. When it was described as wolfish I guess I had a different idea in mind. Since the monkeys and stuff are on there v1 will probably end with the monkey fight / heading to the middle layer after the fight.
Uhh, New York?
Granted when I referred to 4th graders reading Harry Potter, there weren't Ipads back then. I don't really know what kids do now, but that was only a decade ago.
I can never follow along in actual books. I always get lost and forget what's even happening. I need occasional pictures and anime girls to help me stay on track or else my tiny brain will just wander into eternity.
>There are a lot of VNs that aren't eroge
>and most manga are shit.
Have you not been interacting with society the last half decade or what? Last time I visited N.Y, majority of the kids were more engrossed in Skylanders and some stupid P2W strategy game on their pads.
Reminder that this is the kind of a person you get into arguments with
Let it sink in for a second
>Name one good book no one knows about
That's fucking retarded. Do you expect me to list something that one guy wrote and burned immediately a few centuries ago?
When I'm talking about forgotten authors, I'm not talking about less-known authors, not litteraly litteracy who.
Most things are. The only good things coming out of anime lately have mostly been movies and OVAs that have nothing to do with light novels or the late night ecchi scene. It's truly amazing how much the overall quality of Japanese animated things goes up when it's totally separated from the LN/VN scenes tropes and cliches and seemingly effortlessly so at that.
The irony is that Light Novel and Visual Novel readers have a massive unfounded superiority complex and truly think that their favorite genre works are gods gift to literature. You could make an entire "LN fans say the darndest things" type compilation out of some of the posts that come out of that sub-fandom and make a book or TV show out of it and probably never run out of Grade A material.
Genre fiction is basically literature that can be easily classified as belonging to a specific genre (horror, romance, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, thriller, etc.), is mostly focused on the plot, and is written primarily for commercial entertainment. It's "literature" that doesn't have any actual literary merit, it's the written equivalent of television.
Googling would probably provide a more precise definition, I'm just talking out of my ass here.
Genre fiction, as opposed to literary fiction. Non-fiction literature exists as well, though.
I got the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion, Roverandom, and the first two Harry Potter books for my tenth birthday (which is in late July) and read them all over summer break. I'd like to believe that I was a genius child prodigy who squandered his talent, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing exceptional about this. Reading isn't hard, and kids aren't retards.
Light Novels are pretty much about pure otaku self insertion power fantasies and catering to fetishes. Morality, character arcs, storytelling, sticking to a concept and generally having things develop in a natural direction barely factor into them, but when they occasionally do the result is generally something actually kind of passable.
LN buisness is good for ghostwriters.
Come on. Name something not entry lvl
>The irony is that Light Novel and Visual Novel readers have a massive unfounded superiority complex
Only true for the annoying Japanese readers mustard race. Everyone else just discuss the plot or talk about their waifu.
When you read everything, everything feels generic, I've read over 1300 manga, around 200 LNs and watched around 600 anime with at least a cour.
But what I love most is harem
Fuck you it just mushes my brain and it feels so kimochi
I'm kind of similar to this but my eyes just kind of drift to the white space between the words after a while and I just kind of scroll over the words, still reading but not bothering to take any meaning from them. Also reading gives me a headache, I don't know how people can do nothing but read for hours and hours
GW tommorow, hope you have your grinding cap ready.
You sound like a liar. I have read over 200 manga, around 10 LNs and watched over 100 anime shows. And can´t stand fucking pure harem shows anymore. You want something more, not something less.
I can very well follow books, but surely more moe would help. Nowadays book are always dealing with the inner conflicts of the obvious author's self insert or some dramatic bullshit; there's nothing like my brain-dead cutesy anime and manga, fuck.
>Here is an actual half decently written and directed show with a variety of characters, themes, concepts and ideas=Probably gets like 10K regular viewers tops on sites like MAL and /a/ and probably mediocre reviews
>Here's some light novel tripe with tropey high school girls, fanservice out the ass, droning dialogue and no sense of direction=pretty much guaranteed 50-100K+ regular viewers on sites like MAL and /a/ as well as rave reviews.
Also works. The real problem with anime right now is it's just catered to and pulled in the lowest common denominator kind of fan just looking for a good fap for so long in the last decade or so that's it's basically gotten to the point where it's only pulling in fetishists and idiots now and the only people that would watch anything else are the people that got into anime before shitty Light novel adaptations became popular and prolific. You can really see it in how your average thread on any given anime forum reads now and what people bother to talk about.
What's worse is now the medium has probably fucked itself into a corner where it probably has nowhere to go if the LN adaptation scene ever does just completely bottom out since people that would be interested in other stuff will have long since written off anime and people that watch LN shit pretty much just watch that exclusively. IMO that's what some of the older anime creators have been trying to warn people about when they say anime can't just be all about cute girls and wish fulfillment. At this point the only one that really seems to be trying to dig themselves out of this whole mostly and successfully so is Bandai who was smart enough to just largely ignore the LN Boom give or take a few Sunrise Studio 8 adaptations this entire time and just continue to go with what had always worked for them in all around multimedia projects and franchises that try to appeal to more than just one or two fringe demographic makeups.
You can only take so much bad read before you give up on the media. Latest one was Overlord, got tricked with the classic "But the LN is much better", it was a bore, exposition upon exposition on the first chapter, and turned out to be another power fantasy everyone is sucking MC´s dick(bone).
Overlord is dung, dropped it on the second volume way before the anime was even announced.
You should know better than to listen to the crossboarders dwelling in those threads.
>Vampire turned out to be the earth itself
He is a pretty shitty writer. But chuuni faggots will gobble it up since he was smart enough to hire someone that draws attractive girls.
>novel is literally called Overlord
>features a goddamned D&D 3.x lich and all the bullshit that that entails as the protagonist
>he somehow doesn't think that it's going to be a powerfantasy
You are the idiot here.
A lot of anons got lured into it with the latest anime, most dropped it, some have it as their first LN and is worshipping the fuck out of it with their daily General even though they have no content to talk about.
Honestly despite what people tell me I barely see how the average big name VN adaptation is any better than the average big name LN adaptation. They share a lot of the same tendencies towards the stupid and pointless and largely just rely on fanservice and core fanboy audiences. It's like every time one gets adapted the original fanbase gets so up it's own asses with how great they think the source is and what a treat the secondary plebs are in for and thus so down peoples throats about them with the result usually being so middling that they end up making pretty much no new fans. Really LN/VN sourcefags and overly ambitious producers need to learn when to shut the hell up once in a while and let the adaptation do the talking, but IMO they don't want to do that because they know the result would be disastrous as people watch these things and make up their own minds which would probably lead to the conclusion that they're mediocre shit at best.
It's a vicious cycle with no end in site cause studios can't figure out much of anything else to do these days though it seems like within a few more years adaptations of cell phone games might supersede adaptations of Light and Visual novels with zealot like cult followings.
>>133812291 here, I barely made it past the green text before drifting off. Post words manga
No just money really, anime producers don't give a shit if the average person find their shows entertaining or not as long as the necessary 3,000 otaku buy their Blu-Rays at their ridiculously marked up prices. Most anime are made solely with hitting that magic break even number in mind, not growing franchises or bringing in new viewers and demographics. Occasionally you get the odd anime original like Love Live that just crushes it and actually has it's works sell progressively more as time goes on but that's fast becoming like a once every couple of years kind of thing.
>literally orders the extermination of a whole lizardman population so Icebug can learn to think
>murders a bunch of tomb raiders for daring to set foot in his tomb
>nukes 70k people and gets giddy over it
>bullies every country in the neigbourhood into listening to him
People complain about adaptations being shit all the fucking time, it's not a LN/VN thing.
And most of the time, guess what? They're right. It's also harder to adapt than manga for obvious reason.
Miracles like Baccano with peerless adaptation and direction are hard to come through.
Oh, I can't remember quite when I read it, but it's part of the deluge of books you get as a young teenager. Along with catcher in the rye, 1984, brave new world, atlas shrugged, and so on.
But reiterating my first response, it's worth reading. I have re-read it a number of times, at different ages, and I always enjoy it.
>What's the appeal of reading tomes with nothing but fucking words in them
Is this b8?
Urobutcher at least produces new content every now and then. The fat fucking faggot spends 5+ years writing a single book even though every single one since the third has been trash and spends most of his spare time blogging about moving, football and the SF/fantasy literature's gamergate equivalent.
Nah, they fucked up by having way too many characters. Popular ones get almost no screentime or have to share it, and no they are no more than archetypes, and never goes beyond it.
>people read posts about people reading anime stories instead of actual books
I mean seriously, how fucking rerarded are you if you don't know why people like books?
Anyone else stop actually reading manga and just click through the pictures to get the story?
>implying this is /a/ and not a /lit/ thread
They didn't fuck up anything.
[email protected] is a very succesful franchise and isn't even an anime one to begin with.
Love Life has been succesfully tailored for one branch of otaku, and even then, its success is an anomaly.
All in all, Bamco doesn't give a fuck because they own both.
I'm willing to read "real" english books, but sometimes the gap between internet/anime/games and litterature english is so big that I can't read a single page without having to search for 2 or 3 words in a dictionary.
I hope it doesn't discourage me because it looks really interesting.
Is English your first language? I had this problem when I started reading French (and even more so during Latin lessons, but fuck school) - overcoming it was a 2-step process, first you develop the vocabulary, which takes a while, and then you gain the context to understand the nuance in phrases, references etc. All worth doing though.
>Plays a virtual reality mmorpg
>Guy mind is stuck in the game or some shit
>UI, stats screens, cash shop item and general game stuff are still functional
Yeah is a game alright.
This particular manga is 90% narration by the main character and 100% power fantasy-fanfiction by the author.
I see a lot of these recently and they are all
based on web/lightnovels
>They like them because they can show them off to all their buddies
As sad as it is, it's probably the main reason why so many people still insist on buying physical books in fucking 2015 when an objectively superior alternative exist and has for many years now.
>muh "genre fiction"
You having a giggle?
Yes I'm French and since English classes are shit (3rd year of Physics and we are learning fucking compound adjectives), I learned all I know through vidya, mangas and even if it seems odd, 4chan.
Well, I think I overcame the "basic" English since I can read/speak/understand common English, but when it comes to a more formal/literary/heavy language I struggle a lot and it doesn't feel smooth.
>insist on buying physical books in fucking 2015
Book piracy is awkward and I refuse to pay amazon for glorified .txt files. I love my ereader because it allows me to pirate books but plenty of stuff isn't available
Yeah, I love the object, but I rarely buy books nowadays.
When you don't have any space left on your shelves, you start to really appreciate your e-reader.
You can also put h-manga in them, so you can read in bed and even fap if the book is really boring.
I actually like some of them, even though they are so shitty. There are a few manhwa like this too
Pic related, my favorite one right now. So far pretty much 0 story or progression but I still want to see what happens for some reason.
Just keep going. Start with American literature, and international English literature. The British classics are somewhat harder, as they're mired in contextual references and odd anachronisms.
It's the primary reason I can't really do light novel series anymore. Its funny how its kind of like Hollywood where the smallest talents that should be considered lowest on the totem pole have the most monstrously inflated egos and it shows in what they write about and how they right it. Shit like Monogatari series, Oreimo, Saekano, Gate, Mekaku and the like getting popular is the worst thing to happen to anime this decade. It seems like Visual Novel writers like Maeda are content to join in the masturbatory writing and empty promises too judging by recent trends and comments. The industry let these people in and tried to crown them kings of writing and now we all have to suffer the consequences of an empowered otaku community and writers who can't and/or won't listen to criticism and only care about pleasing their dwindling regimen of yes men fanboys.
Waiting for this shit.... still waiting. .. LN pics when.
I like this and the spider one, both are pretty comfy.
Nah, it just feels more comfier to sit in a nice chair, dim the lights enough to read the text, drink one site and snacks on the other reading a book.
Tablet's hurt my eyes after a while, and the shit on them is distracting.
Why do you think? People others opinions in the discussion too. If you just want to hear and see a one-sided story than go to the most echo-chamber-friendly-site on the internet: Reddit.
>People others opinions in the discussion too.
But you can go, take one, open it and smell the new paper with the immaculate whiteness dazzling your eyes.
Seriously, a Kindle for books and a 7 inches Tablet with MangaRock for manga scans is the way to go.
>Lending your books
Seriously ? I can't trust anyone when it comes to my personnal stuff.
I never saw either movies so I wanted to get a grasp of the original story, but I guess I'll watch it.
>Is it a major piece of litterature ?
Not knowing What is widely considered to be the most important piece of Literature of the 20th century and putting a space before a question mark. Why are you posting in this thread
Oratoria translation when? It's illustrated by Haimura . Can't it interest him?
Oh ok, thanks I take note, maybe I'll read it someday.
>not reading the whole conversation
I don't know shit about International/English litterature since everyone spammed me with Hugo, Zola, Stendhal, Balzac and their friends, so people here are kind of educating me on things I have to read.
And for the space before the question mark, if you look closely, every French types like that, it's a grammar rule.
>Toujours un espace avant et après le point-virgule, le point d'interrogation, le point d'exclamation et les deux points.
What about Proust?
Did you enjoy In Search of Lost Time?
>Throwing a tantrum over a mere space
>The red and the black
Fuck this shit.
I only read some portions of it at school and even if the sentences were long as hell, I still found it relaxing, especially the madeleine part.
This one is pretty interesting.
>Family dies in a truck accident.
>Pet bird dies a year later.
>Pet bird reincarnated in a fantasy world as a girl
>Summons MC from Earth to be with her
>They eventually get married and all that
Kind of nice to have a summoned to a fantasy world story with a monogamous relationship that progresses.
It's amusing when you take into account that cockatiels are one of the birds that mate for life and they have a tendency of considering their human owner their mate.
Reincarnation as a concept is morally abhorrent.
He said "actual books".
Yes, but people will say otherwise because he's popular and then rely on meme's, ad homenims, or look at only one component of his writing (prose) to say he isn't. He has so many fans that are willing to defend his works for a reason.
>Anybody else thinking that average looking mc described in LNs are correct? Cuz I'm not convinced .
They rarely are actually average looking. Best example I can think of where MC is described as average and actually looked average / mediocre in the art is probably Tsuki ga Michibiku Isekai Douchuu.
On one hand Malazan Book of the Fallen, but on the other shitty YA like Keys to the Kingdom and shitty self insert garbage like Name of the Wind? I don't know what to make of you, /a/non.
All the books have to do is entertain, all of the things he listed do that marveolously.
Half of Overlord is basically the guy's old D&D campaigns put to writing, like the whole of volume 7.
Non-fiction never involves a friendless kid getting transported to another world and finding a cute princess to love.
While writing that, I just realized this entire subset of LNs is basically The Neverending Story.
Yeah but that's not saying much Name of the Wind is the shittiest self-insert story I've ever read and I heard only bad things about Game of Thrones. Anyway Sanderson isn't a very good writer but he's at least average and his ideas and magic systems are quite entertaining.
I like Sanderson fine and used to read a lot of his stuff, but when someone jumps into an LN thread on the anime board to say "LNs are immature shit, you should read real books like the top-selling YA author of the moment," of course everyone's going to mock the guy.
It's pretty average for a light novel. Which means it's pretty bad but still enjoyable if you like one of the girls and can avoid thinking too much about the story. I might call it above average actually since at the very least the writer tries to justify the Mary Sue protagonist and isn't ashamed of his pandering.
>STOP EATING THAT SHIT
>EAT MY SHIT INSTEAD
You're eating shit regardless, how about sparing yourself the trouble and let each man eat his own shit in peace.
Now, if you only read 'the good stuff', you'll run out of stuff to read disgustingly fast, and that's not really fun, so do yourself a favor and close your oral shithole.
The ancient Greeks were the first worthwhile philosophers, the pinnacle of human brilliance and just now, since the start of the 20th century, humanity is coming close to their intellectual level again.
Who are these intellectuals, anon? In the last century there's not much outside of Godel, Fermi and Von Neumann that you can call true intellectuals.
Of course these aren't philosophers, but I believe physics and math are by far the most important fields that propelled humans into the current computer age.
Yeah, I was mostly thinking about physics and mathematics. The number of intellectuals doesn't really matter though, in the 20th century mankind went beyond anything done before. In a single human lifetime we went from crude flight to putting people on the moon and harnessing the power of the atom.
too bad every shit that is being translated are all battle harems
fuck, i just want to read some comfy father and daughter adventures
>Holy shit is this real life?
I think people lost interest in that series when spoilers for volume 4-8 came out and it turned out the MC and hot jailbait female in that pic don't even associate with eachother. and that their relationship is tacked onto the end of book 9 (the end of the series)
sorta took all the steam out of translating it when it turned out the best part about the story gets ignored for more then half the story.
You sure that wasn't just made up? They've been pretty associative for the first 3 books, mostly due to situational need, hard to believe it suddenly gets dropped out of nowhere.
Naturally, once she's old enough, nobody would touch her unless it's over my dead body, but first I gotta find a way to make myself and my family immortal, or at least ageless so we can have a big happy family.
Kinda fucked up, but it's okay, inbreeding is pretty common in those times.
Depends on how lewd she is. She gets the D if she's lewd and if she isn't then I'll just make her my daughter and give someone else the D. I know I'll be swarming is pussy either way since I was suddenly transported to a fantasy world. Even Shield Hero has girls who want his D.
>The victory of communism and the advance of technological progress on the Earth of the Noon Universe resulted in an over-abundance of resources and eliminated the need for most types of manual labor.
>victory of communism
Are you srs
>People that don't know anything about literature talk about literature
Is it just me or later volume Kazuma look more like a "shady" guy? I mean he looks just like a normal dude in the early volumes but lately with those eyes he looks like Hachiman or something.
I think Sheeprabbit died again. I wish he had kept translating Wild Last Boss instead of asking for permission.
Oni is alright. I liked Sophia too. The best part of them two is comparing them to idiot Shun though.
Poor Shun, he got stuck being human and got his imouto taken away, Oniman lost basically everything, Vampire girl at least had her butler and the best bodyguards she could ask for with her.
Well started with Oka telling the fucking elves about the reincarnations. That created a ton of problems all over. Shun created problems just because of being the weak shit he was. He never took training really seriously at all until Yuugo almost killed him.
The vast majority of books are bad, the same as manga, anime and light novels.
Actually, all light novels are bad. But that aside, the proportion of good books to bad books is probably about the same as good manga and anime to bad manga and anime.
I want more Youjo Senki. Reading it feels like I'm reading an actual book. Instead we're just going to get more generic bottom of the barrel OP MC in a fantasy world to replace overlord instead.
