The formula is repeated again and again and again since the beginning of time. The last jedi, the last Sayan, the last master of hiten mitsurugi, and so on...

I don't know why you'd do that, but fights aren't really spoilers anyway. Hunter x Hunter actually has a good story and very in depth world building. The setting and the rules in place are pretty well fleshed out and stuff. It's more about the adventure than anything.

Gon's development was done more through reveals of existing traits rather than changing over time. He seems like a kind, happy go lucky kid, then throughout the series we find out he's amoral, a bit crazy, treats Killua badly and is prone to massive tantrums when things dont go his way.

Meruem's development was beautifully done, youd have to be blind to simplify it to falling in love when it basically flipped his entire world view and reason for existing on it's head. He was born ridiculously strong with zero empathy for humans and designed for the sole purpose of ruling over everything, and in the end he says he was born to play gungi with Komugi. So good.

Kurapika's development revolves around how bad of a person he's willing to become for revenge.
