The pledge is only done in elementary school. Middle and high school we never had to do it. Strictly speaking, the pledge isn't mandatory, you don't have to participate. But it'd be pretty unusual for a kid around 10 to go against the grain that hard. I never had to get a full physical while in school because I never did anything that required it. My brother played on the school football team so he needed to do a full physical exam and get a signed permission slip from the doctor saying he could play.

Well, my experience was that even though teachers acted with utmost respect towards pupils and treated them like equals, they still acted like total assholes and ignored every rule. I do understand your reasoning but you expect too much from an average teenager. Not exactly, we had a small "senior lounge" outside the cafeteria that only seniors or people they invited could use. We had 9 equal length periods in one school day, one of which was used for lunch (and the entire high school got one of 4 periods in the middle of the day).
