Took the words right outta my fucking mouth. I am absolutely buttblasted with what Whitefox has done in the fourth episode. The events following up to his death are much too important to butcher. Not only did they miss important character developments they also did fuckall with some key plot points between the maids and Subaru that will be important later on in the story.

If they wanted to showcase his death and have more impact it should have been done at the end or during the fifth episode.

They used the "SOMETHING TO PROTECT" cliche which I guess really pissed off some, but whatever. It was pretty well-directed; the way the story beats were delivered always worked in its favor. The way the reporters act like insensitive sensationalistic assholes over something horrible wasn't in the Tezuka story, but it felt like a very Tezuka thing to add.

The 80s version, meanwhile, that many praise the shit out of, is just bad. It's mostly a straight adaptation of the manga with uglier designs and bad animation, but then they completely screw up the ending for more action (Pluto's suicide-attack doesn't take out Bora, Astro does in an extended fight scene) and there's an entire scene at the end where a narrator explains the moral of the story. Fucking stupid.

Meanwhile, I can compare this to the OVA version of Jotaro vs. Dio in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Different, but a good kind of different.

The Tezuka story is pretty awesome and recommended and I totally understand why it's Urusawa's favorite Astro Boy story. There are others that hit closer to home in terms of social commentary as far as racial conflict goes and whatnot, but this one story is so universal and summarizes the core of Astro Boy's message so well that you could translate it to pretty much any insular, far-away culture and they would understand what it's trying to say and possibly even be moved by it.

I dunno what the 60s version is like but I assume it's like the rest: unwatchably cheap most of the time with occasional "money shot" moments of proper animation and art.

Talk about Tezuka stuff in general I guess.
