>As part of an extracurricular lesson, Satoshi and his friends are made to gather the ingredients for "Alola Curry", a traditional Akalan dish. They encounter all kinds of difficulties, but still somehow manage to gather the ingredients. And then a Rarantes shows up and challenges Satoshi to a battle.

SM36 - Lychee's Grand Trial! The Hardest Pokémon Match Ever!! (August 3rd)
>Satoshi has finally become able to challenge the Grand Trial of Lychee, Island Queen of Akala Island. The Grand Trial against Lychee is a double battle. I think it's just the rise of social media. For example when Ash lost the Sinnoh league to Tobias, the backlash never spread outside of pokemon forums. You never saw news sites reporting on Ash's loss in DP like they did with XY. Weird thing is social media was pretty common by 2010, yet the news never left the pokemon fandom.

Takeshi and Kasumi are iconic characters from Pokemon history past, yes.
But this new movie is an alternate story set in the world of Another Satoshi(A more modern take). It's not a "Reboot" or new story to replace the original. It's a way of celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Pocket Monsters anime buy showing many things which are similar to the first series and then finally expanding on the story to show the first legendary Pokemon Satoshi ever saw "Houou".

The anime is still set in the same continuity it always has been. Anime Satoshi travelled with Kasumi and Takeshi, Haruka, Masato and Takeshi, Hikari and Takeshi,Dento and Airisu, Citron, Serena and Eureka and now his Arora school companions. The ending of the movie was a present to those who have stuck with the anime all this time, to show them it is not a reboot of the series.

How you made this miscalculation and wrong assumption is understandable, but please go watch the movie and enjoy it as a Pokemon movie. Don't hate it because it's different.

Kimi ni kimeta says the opposite. Ash has 100% on model faces and has shown desperation, angst, joy and extreme anger.

If animators can't show emotions when they are drawing on model characters, then they aren't doing their job well. Look at DBZ. Minoru Maeda drew on model characters (because he was the main character designer), and still was able to make show them a wide range of emotions.

Ash has a simpler design in S&M because it allows the animators to move him in more elaborate ways his other more complex designs couldn't without sacrificing time.
